RENAULTSPORT Twingo 133 Cup Released

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=914

Renault has unveiled the new Twingo RS 133 Cup.

Designed to deliver "a more focused driving experience with less equipment and a lower price," the Cup lacks typical convenience items such as air conditioning, automatic headlights, tinted windows and independent sliding rear seats (they are replaced by a one-piece bench).

While it isn't luxurious, the car boasts a sports suspension with revised damper settings and higher spring rates (10% stiffer front and rear). Other touches include a reduced ride height (it sits 4mm lower than the standard Renaultsport) and anthracite 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels outfitted with Continental Sport Contact3 195/40 tires.

In terms of styling, Renault offers a 'black and white' package with Glacier White bodywork and gloss black accents on the door mirrors, rear spoiler and front bumper. Gloss black 17" alloys wheels can also be ordered.

Power comes from the Twingo RS' 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 98 kW and 160 Nm of torque. While performance data wasn't released, the Cup will likely run from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, before topping out at 201 km/h.

STARTECH Takes on Range Rover and Freelander 2

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=915

Startech has unveiled their new styling packages for the Land Rover Range Rover and the Land Rover Freelander 2 (LR2).

The Range Rover receives LED daytime running lights, 22-inch Monostar IV light-alloy wheels, and dual trapezoidal stainless-steel exhaust tips. For the interior, Startech adds exclusive wood trim, leather door panels, and various other accessories. Customers can also turn their Range Rover into an "office on wheels" or a "mobile multimedia lounge with state-of-the-art communication technology."

On the other hand, the Freelander 2 features a revised front bumper (with integrated LED daytime running lights), a new rear apron, a stainless-steel sport exhaust system, and 20-inch Monostar IV light-alloy wheels. Inside, Startech replaces the dull interior with custom leather upholstery and bright trim accents.

The company is currently working on packages for the facelifted 2010 Range Rover and 2010 Range Rover Sport (two rendered images attached). While details are limited, Startech says they will feature an aerodynamic body kit, a modified suspension, 22-inch wheels, and a custom interior with leather and alcantara upholstery as well as precious-wood inlays.

STARTECH Program for Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=916

Startech has announced a new styling and performance package for the facelifted Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK).

This particular Overland model is outfitted with a new front spoiler (with LED daytime running lights), a revised rear apron, and attractive side sills with integrated LED lighting. Other touches include a stainless-steel sport exhaust system, a suspension lowering kit (reduces ride height by 30mm / 1.2 inches), and 22-inch Monostar IV wheels equipped with Pirelli Scorpion tires.

Inside, Startech offers a vast array of accessories including everything "from a speedometer bezel with brushed aluminum design to aluminum pedals and door-lock pins to polished stainless-steel scuff plates with (an) illuminated Startech logo." Customers can also order a customized interior with leather and alcantara upholstery.

If you think the 3.0-liter CRD engine could use a performance boost, you might want to check out Startech's SD6 tuning kit. It enables the turbodiesel engine to produce 193 kW and 580 Nm of torque, instead of 160 kW and 510 Nm of torque.

As you may recall, the facelifted Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced in 2007 and the redesigned 2011 model goes on sale next year.

New Lorinser package for Merc M-Class Facelift

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=917

Lorinser will not leave Mercedes-Benz ML customers in the lurch when it comes to keeping up with the official styling changes applied to the luxury SUV. The sportiness of the ML has been accentuated through the use of an aggressive body kit that extends from front to back.

Starting on the front end a new massive Lorinser four-fin grille was fitted. Then there are Lorinser-branded side skirts and wide wheel arches. Wheels pictured here are by no means the standard; customers will be given an extensive menu of light alloys to choose from in either black or silver.

The rear features an integrated spoiler with four tailpipes. Lorinser says a "startling whistle" is heard when the driver steps on the accelerator, regardless of whether it's a petrol or a diesel.

No power or performance figures were made available but a 2008 Lorinser package for the ML 320 CDI upped power to 192kW and torque went up to 580Nm.

Citi Golf trapped at 180 km/h

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=912

Sixteen drivers were arrested after being caught speeding on the N1 north freeway in the Midrand area, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.

Spokeswoman Phindani Tebeila said the 16 arrested included two motorists in a VW Citi Golf and an Audi R8, who were caught driving at the highest speed of 180km/h and 195km/h, near the Olifantsfontein off-ramp.

All the drivers were released on bail and they are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday to face charges of reckless and negligent driving.

Toyota Prius Tuning by Tommy Kaira and ASI

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=913

Eco-friendly cars are the talk of the town for the moment. Every manufacturer is either producing one or planning to. Toyota is an acknowledged leader in the field with its Prius hybrid as well as others. Few respected tuners have embraced the green thing so far, unless they are based in Japan where it almost seems the government has a decree forcing tuners to work on "green" cars as well.

How else do you explain the flurry of activity coming from enviro-friendly garages around the country? This Prius done by Tommi Kaira is but one of these. It features low front lips, big front air dams shaped like those of an Audi R8, thick rims, wide side skirts and a new rear bumper. The Prius logo is missing, as is the discretion normally linked to the car. Most striking though are the four tailpipes which do not in any way suggest "green". In fact they have the opposite effect on the eye.

Cars like the GT-R or the Impreza STI are well-suited for power and body upgrades. They are expected to pollute the eardrum along with the planet, and their fans love them for it. Prius and Honda Insight are quite different simply because of the statement they make.

There certainly is a future in eco-tuning (new word for you) but no one is quite sure what it looks like. That's perhaps why cars like this one could be discarded in current tuning circles. One such tuner is Ben Schaffer, owner of Bespoke Ventures. His company is a major American/international parts distributor and marketer for top Japanese tuning brands (KenStyle, Top Secret). Schaffer's view is that eco is good yes, but it has no place in the world of powerhouses like the R35 GT-R. Moderation is the key instead of jumping on the bandwagon. He reminds his fellow competitors/colleagues not to lose sight of their core business and enthusiasm which is sports cars.

Speedster Malema won't pay

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=911

Julius Malema is just as fast on the road as he is to open his mouth – and he does not believe in paying his speeding fines.

The president of the ANC Youth League, renowned for his hard-partying, love of fast cars and glib comments – has notched up thousands of rands in unpaid speeding fines in the Johannesburg metro alone.

His explanation: “I only know revolution, I don't know anything about driving.”

With 14 traffic offences worth more than R5 000 to his name, he is ahead of the Youth League leadership pack. His nearest rival is ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu who has managed to rack up a dozen unpaid fines in the city since August last year amounting to R2 625. In contrast, Malema's predecessor as ANCYL president, Fikile Mbalula - now deputy minister of police - has no fines in Johannesburg.

Malema's top recorded speed was 169 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on 21 September last year as his jet-black Mercedes Benz C350 sped along the N1 near Midrand. He has yet to pay the R1 100 fine. The previous day he was also photographed as he braked hard and slowed to 146 km/h, just seconds too late to evade the speed camera.

Currently in the US

Malema's most recent infringement on September 6, netted him a R750 fine.

Contacted on his cellphone in America where he and Mbalula were taking part in a controversial junket to “promote South Africa” and “encourage Americans to invest” - Malema once again pulled out the race card.

“Let me tell you my friend, I have defeated you and your apartheid regime and I'm going to defeat you again, once and for all!"

“All of you combined, you can't do anything. You are wasting your time."

“I am a child of heroes and heroines of the struggle. I am not a child of cowards and oppressors. I am not a child of an imperialist. I have defeated colonisers. I am going to defeat the children of colonisers.”

Could face arrest

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson, Inspector Edna Mamonyane, said normally a warrant of arrest was issued once a fine remained unpaid for 90 days and the offender failed to appear in court “although it can sometimes take a bit longer”.

She declined to comment about Malema.

The JMPD's head spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said that “any person will be accountable for any traffic fine, whether they are a judge or whoever they are”.

Contacted on Friday, Shivambu professed ignorance about both his and Malema's fines.

“I think you are very bored, honestly. I don't know what you are talking about...We can't comment on useless things because we must first verify where you got the information from because you might have made it up in your own mind.”

Jealous

He then cut the call.

Contacted again, he responded brusquely: “I don't want to talk to you about that. Why do you even want to look into that thing? Don't call me, I'm going to drop the phone.”

Earlier this month, amid the national furore over cabinet ministers' and premiers' waBenzi frenzy, Malema said that critics were “jealous” and that top government officials should be allowed to drive expensive cars at taxpayers' expense. He said he would never be a cabinet minister because then he would have to explain why he drove a luxury car.

“What is corruption? Driving a Mercedes Benz? Driving a Mercedes Benz cannot be corruption. If that is how you define corruption, then you are jealous,” Malema reportedly said.

STARTECH Tuning for All Jaguar XK and XKR Models

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=909

German tuners Startech has turned their attentions to the Jaguar XK and the Jaguar XKR. The company's design packages are available for both the coupe and convertible of either model.

Although typically known for working on Chrysler made vehicles, Startech decided to turn their attention to the British models for the '09 Frankfurt show. The company brought a revised version of the XK Coupe to the IAA there. New exterior touches are made out of carbon fiber, and include spoiler flaps that were tacked on to the OEM apron. The new rear molding is built out of the lightweight material, and incorporates a black, honeycomb mesh between the new dual exhaust.

Design modifications include daytime running lights built into the air vents on either side at the front end. The car sits on Monostar J Diamond Edition 21-inch three-piece wheels. It also sits lower, as the ride height on both models has been dropped by about 40 millimeters.

Startech did not stop with the exterior. The customized brandy-toned leather and Alcantara interior with contrasting seams was meant to evoke a "very English ambiance in the cockpit," although the customer can choose from a wider variety of colors. Bamboo trim replaces the OEM aluminum or precious-wood options, but a carbon-fiber trim may also be chosen.

AVUS Performance Modest Tuning for Nissan GT-R

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=910

Avus Performance has unveiled a new range of styling and performance accessories for the Nissan GT-R.

Starting with a run-of-the-mill GT-R Black Edition, Avus added a matt black body vinyl adhesive foil, a coilover suspension and 20-inch wheels outfitted with wheel spacers.

While the exterior looks a little plain, the same thing can't be said about the engine. Equipped with a modified ECU and a high performance exhaust system, the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 produces 433 kW and 700 Nm of torque. While no performance figures were given, the revised output is a huge increase from the standard car's 362 kW and 588 Nm of torque.

VW eyes Suzuki

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=904

Volkswagen is expected to take a stake in Suzuki by the end of 2009, German industry publication Automobilwoche report, citing an unnamed Suzuki executive.

"We expect that there will be a basic agreement this year," the publication quoted the executive as saying on the sidelines of this year's Frankfurt auto show.

"For Suzuki and VW this connection would be a win-win situation. Suzuki would have access to a variety of VW's technology, while Volkswagen would have a solid supporting leg in India and Southeast Asia," the manager said.

Volkswagen declined to comment on the report while Suzuki Germany was not immediately available for comment.

There has been speculation previously that VW would be interested in a tie-up with Suzuki and a person familiar with the matter had told Reuters in August that talks had take place.

Last Monday, VW's Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said that the product portfolio of Suzuki would fit well with that of VW, declining to comment further.

Gauteng buses pulled from road

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=905

Twenty-five out of 30 buses checked for roadworthiness were removed from the road on Tuesday in a law enforcement operation, Gauteng community safety said.

"This is an alarming rate considering that most of our people rely on public transport to ferry them daily," spokesperson Sizwe Matshikiza said.

The roadworthy operation by the Gauteng traffic police started on Tuesday morning and would be ongoing.

Matshikiza said the operation was in response to a public outcry.

"Commuters in and around Pretoria raised serious concerns about the poor state of buses that they use daily to and from their workplaces."

Matshikiza said the "outcry" was also heard during an imbizo held in Mamelodi, Pretoria, on September 17.

During the meeting commuters informed senior leaders of the Gauteng government and Tshwane Metropolitan Council that they often report late for work because of the unroadworthy state of buses they were forced to use.

"Some feared they would lose their jobs," said Matshikiza.

He said in a separate road safety operation earlier in September officials seized 30 taxis for roadworthy inspections.

It was later found that eight of the taxis seized were actually stolen vehicles.

The vehicles were handed over to the SA Police Service for further investigations.

Carlsson Previews CK50 based on Merc E 500 Coupe

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=906

German tuner Carlsson has released details previewing its tuning package for the Mercedes E 500 E-Class Coupe (C 207).

The CK50, as Carlsson has branded it, comes with an increase in power over the production model, with output dialed up to 320kW and 600Nm of torque. 8 of those extra killerwatts come courtesy of the stainless steel sport exhaust silencer, with dual oval pipes, that also provides for a more robust sound.

To help handle those extra 35kW (from the standard model's 285kW) is a coilover suspension with damping and height adjusting that can lower the car up to 30mm. Carlsson also offers its 1/5 REVO 20-inch light alloy wheels which come in a dual-tone finish.

The aerodynamic kit is rather spare, featuring only a front and rear spoiler. An optional RS front lip is also available.

For the interior Carlsson adds a few touches to mark its presence. These include gearshift and steering wheel covers offered in a leather/ultra-suede combo, aluminum covers for the pedals and illuminated floor mats with the Carlsson badge.

Megane Renaultsport 250 Launched

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=907

Renault will start selling the all-new Mégane Renaultsport 250 in the UK in November. The car is powered by a 2.0-litre twin scroll turbo engine making 184kW at 5,500rpm and maximum torque of 340Nm made at 3,000rpm. This represents a 30Nm increase over the old Mégane R26 R. Renault says 80% of torque is available from 1,900rpm. Drive is through a 6-speed manual gearbox.

A number of new features have been installed in the Renaultsport 250. One is the Renaultsport Monitor which, through a central dashboard display, shows information such as lateral acceleration, 0 - 60mph acceleration, lap times and real-time engine performance.

The other feature is the Renaultsport Dynamic Management which controls the intensity of the Electronic Skid Control (ESC). At its most extreme the function can be totally switched off. Two chassis settings are available, the standard Sport setting which is more of an everyday setup and the stiffer Cup setting.

Styling enhancements include LED daytime running lights, an F1-inspired front bumper blade, side sills, wider wheel arches, a rear diffuser and an extended tailgate spoiler. The centrally-mounted tailpipe apparently gives out notes that can rival any comparable sports car.

The interior can be fitted with optional Recaro seats while the steering wheel is reach and height adjustable. Aluminium pedal covers are also included.

AC Schnitzer Tuning Program for BMW Z4 (E89)

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=908

AC Schnitzer has unveiled an extensive tuning program for the BMW Z4 (E89).

Under the hood, Schnitzer upgraded the turbocharged 3.0-liter engine (sDrive35i) so it now produces 265kW. Thanks to the extra 60 hp, the Z4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 286 km/h.

Other performance modifications include a stainless steel sport exhaust system (with chromed 'racing' tailpipes) and a revised suspension.

To enhance the Z4's good looks, Schnitzer added an aerodynamic body kit with a new front spoiler, a chrome grille, aggressive front fenders (with integrated air vents), and a two-piece rear spoiler. The styling can be further accented by a wide variety of custom AC Schnitzer wheels available in 18, 19 or 20 inches.

Inside, the company adds an aluminum cover for the iDrive controller and an aluminum pedal set.

Insignia OPC musings...

I've actually been holding off on more mods on the OPC, was holding out to get more info on the Insignia OPC and if it might by any chance of fate be finding it's way to our sunny shores...

Think about it... a 2.8 V6 twin-turbo, running 239kW stock and all wheel drive? Software tuning alone make the figure jump to 261kW.

But after playing a bit with the German website's configurator and spec'ing it to something I wouldn't mind making extra debt and selling/trading my Astra in for... I discovered... that the Euro price already equals around R530k... I dread to think how much our local price would be higher than that....

So its stick with the Astra OPC and forget the Insignia OPC.

2010 Opel Asta Public Premiere in Frankfurt

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=897

Opel shrugged off current corporate delays over its tie-up with Magna and unveiled the all-new 2010 Astra at Frankfurt. The 5-door hatch, also known as the Vauxhall Astra in the UK is attempting to spark renewed interest in the entire brand.

Engines to accompany the launch cars include a 1.4 petrol turbo with 88kW and a 1.6 turbo making 132kW. The latter is sourced from the reigning European car of the Year, the Insignia.

Interior design inspiration is no secret; again the Insignia was called upon to provide it. That's not a bad thing at all because the Insignia is a very good looking car, inside and out. Plenty of features like CD/ MP3 players, air conditioning, power steering, satellite navigation and more will make owners happy.

The new Astra goes on sale in Europe this autumn.

Fiat 500 based Hamann Largo

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=898

Hamann has unveiled the new Fiat 500 Abarth-based Largo.

In an attempt to make the car more masculine, Hamann added an aerodynamic body kit with a redesigned front bumper (featuring integrated LED daytime running lights), wheel well extensions (they increase width 30 mm in front, 35 mm in back), and attractive side skirts. The Largo also receives a four tailpipe exhaust system and a sporty rear diffuser inspired by Ferrari.

The car rides on a Hamann-coilover suspension, which lowers the center of gravity by up to 60 mm. Equipped with 18-inch matt black wheels, the Largo is stopped by a high performance braking system with ventilated front discs and four-piston calipers.

Power comes from a revised 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 195 kW and 348 Nm of torque. While no performance data was released, this is a huge increase from the Abarth's 101 kW and 206Nm of torque.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamann Ferrari California Tuning Programme

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=899

HAMANN Motorsport has developed a full tuning programme for the new Ferrari California. Promising to make Ferrari fans' hearts beat faster, HAMANN made changes to the entire car.

The 4.3-litre normally aspirated V8 has a standard power rating of 338kW. That will be increased by 20% to 406kW. To achieve that figure engineers are working on, among others, the engine management system as well as a sports exhaust.

It doesn't stop there. The exterior has a new aerodynamic kit that includes a lift-reducing front spoiler, a carbon fibre bonnet, side skirts that calm the air between the axles, a rear spoiler that increases contact pressure and a 3-part rear diffuser. Maximum grip is thus attained.

Still on maximum grip the car comes running on 245/30ZR21 tyres with 9.0Jx21 rims up front and 345/25ZR21 rubber on 12.5Jx21 at the rear. The wheels are black varnished multi-piece HAMANN aluminium with titanium bolting and are quite light to help reduce unsprung weight.

A full customisation application is available for the interior and ranges from a complete leather interior to personalised floor mats.

Edo Competition Enzo XX Evolution with 618kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=900

It was less than two months ago that Edo Competition revealed the Enzo XX to an unsuspecting public. The tuner has now gone back to the same car and made improvements. How does one improve on 588kW? Can one? Apparently yes.

Meet the new edo Enzo XX Evolution, the next step in the process. Power is up and weight is down, a sure recipe for good performance numbers. By increasing the Enzo's 6.0-litre V12 cubic capacity to 6.3-litre, installing new camshafts, modified cylinder heads, titanium valve spring retainers and connecting rods, high flow catalytic converters, mufflers and air filters and new high performance exhaust headers edo did just this.

A lot more was done like improving the transmission's shift times to 60 milliseconds - 20 milliseconds less than an F1 car and using lighter drive shafts.

In the end 100kg was shed and extra horses were brought into the stable. Now the car makes 618kW and maximum torque of 780Nm is available at 5,800rpm. Moreover removing the muffler frees an extra 15kW.

Performance figures are 0 - 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, 200km/h in 9 seconds and 300km/h in 19 seconds. Top speed is said to go beyond the 390km/h point thus presenting a real challenge to the 407km/h recorded by the Veyron under the skilled tutelage of one James May.

Exterior changes include a new retractable rear wing, new LED taillights and a new rear skirt with winglets.

Edo Competition will throw in a test day with an instructor and full hospitality package for those who choose to convert their prized Enzos.

BMW X1 Debuts in Frankfurt

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=894

BMW's makeshift track at the 2009 IAA in Frankfurt hosted a number of premiers including the brand's smallest SUV (or SAV) yet. The X1 made its entrance to onlookers and could be seen as the antidote to those massive SUVs seen at the turn of the century.

It is designed as a BMW through and through with signature elements like the kidney grille and the Hofmeister kink" at the C pillar.

The interior features the typical surfboard dash with a driver-bias angle and is stocked with sweet gadgets like a CD player, a rear parking camera in some models, a six-speaker sound system, the new iDrive system and a USB port among others.

Models in the range include the xDrive18d with 105kW and 320Nm, the xDrive23d with 150kW and 400Nm of torque. These are all AWD but RWD options will also be available.

The new X1 goes on sale in the US in 2011 while other markets, notably some in Europe, will get it in early 2010.

Volvo C70 Facelift Drops Top in Frankfurt

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=895

The facelift Volvo C70 was part of the Swedish automaker's presentation at the 2009 IAA. Labelled as two cars in one the hard-top C70 features a new front grille, new headlights, more chrome bits and new rear LED lights. Its three-piece hard roof folds neatly into the rear and has a full glass window instead of the cheaper soft transparent plastic found in some convertibles.

The interior was fitted with soft hide seats, exclusive new instruments with gauges and graphics specific to the C70 and a new sleeker instrument panel.

Petrol engine models remain with the 2.4 petrol worth 103kW and 220Nm, the 2.4i with 125kW and 230Nm, and the T5 with a 5-cylinder turbo making 169kW and 320Nm of torque.

Safety, a heavily marketed Volvo trait, is assured through the inflatable curtains on both doors, front seat side-impact airbags and sturdy metal hoops for roll-over situations.

Packing a 5.2-liter V10 engine with 386 kW and 530 Nm of torque, the Spyder accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds before hitting a top speed of 313 km/h. Manual models average 14.9L/100km, while R tronic models get 13.9L/100km.

To enable the Spyder to hit these kinds of speeds, the car had to be constructed as light as possible. Despite the extra chassis reinforcements to compensate for the lack of fixed roof, the aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) only weighs 216 kilograms which is only 6 kilograms heavier than the one used on the R8 Coupe. In total, the manual equipped R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs 1,720 kilograms.

In terms of styling, the Spyder looks pretty much as expected. The only small caveat is the carbon fiber rear hatch has two aggressive-looking arched cowls which act as integrated air vents. Other design tweaks include black front end accents, a chrome grille, and full-LED headlights. With the lack of a fixed roof, Audi replaced the trademark 'sideblades' with carbon fiber side panels.

Speaking of the roof, Audi decided to use a traditional cloth top (available in three colors) because it only weighs 30 kilograms. Electrohydraulically operated, the top can be raised or lowered in about 19 seconds while the car travels at speeds up to 50 km/h. To further maximize convenience, the rear window is separate from the top which allows it to be raised independently of the roof.

Inside, the roadster is awash with premium materials and elegant design. Goodies include Nappa leather upholstery, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, GPS navigation, and heated seats. If you forget to put the top up on a hot summer day, the seats will be cooler than normal because they use special "pigments that reflect the infrared component of sunlight." Should that fail to impress you, Audi also offers exclusive leather packages, special interior trim, and seatbelt microphones for the hands-free telephone communications system.

Audi will begin accepting orders for the R8 Spyder shortly, with the first German deliveries expected to occur in early 2010.

2010 Audi S5 Sportback

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=890

Audi has officially unveiled the segment-bending 2010 S5 Sportback.

Designed to mix performance and functionality, the Sportback features coupe-inspired styling with a five-door layout. The car also boasts Audi's traditional S-design body kit, aluminum-look side mirror housings, xenon headlights, a four-tailpipe exhaust system, black brake calipers, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels with 245/40 tires.

While the exterior is sporty and aggressive, the interior is modern and luxurious. Niceties include Silk Nappa leather sport seats, brushed aluminum trim, and a sports steering wheel with shift paddles. Options include climate-controlled comfort seats, various trim inlays (carbon fiber, fine-grained birch wood and stainless steel mesh), and several different upholstery colors.

Like the S4 sedan, the S5 Sportback is powered by a supercharged three-liter V6 with 245 kW and 440 Nm of torque. Backed up by a seven-speed S tronic transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive, the Sportback accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (estimated) before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. In terms of efficiency, the engine is expected to consume 9.7L/100km.

Other performance features include a sports-tuned chassis and a speed-sensitive servotronic steering unit. If you prefer a sportier ride, Audi offers a sport differential and a "dynamic" steering system.

66 held for drunk driving

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=891

Sixty-six drivers were arrested for drunk driving in Cape Town, the City of Cape Town Traffic Services said on Tuesday.

"The highest reading was recorded at 3.32mg per 1000ml of breath," said spokeswoman Chief Inspector Merle Lourens.

She said roadblocks were held in Khayelitsha, Gordon's Bay and Bishop Lavis with the aim of reducing the number of road accidents involving drunk drivers at the weekend.

She said 370 vehicles were stopped at the road blocks and 66 drivers were arrested for allegedly driving a motor vehicle on a public road while under the influence of alcohol.

This meant that the concentration of alcohol in any specimen of breath was not less than 0.24mg per 1000ml of breath taken.

One-hundred-and-twenty-eight people were charged for driving without a valid driving licence and 81 for operating unlicensed vehicles on the road.

Various other fines were issued including for failing to wear safety belts.

Five cars were suspended from use on the road as they had too many mechanical defects, she said.

Abt Presents VW Polo Tuning Package

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=892

ABT Sportsline is making its presence felt at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a very small way. The tuner has unveiled its littlest car in the Volkswagen Polo. The base is the new fifth generation car and while changes are visible, some are actually not. Like the power figures.

ABT has taken the factory 1.6 TDI and given it several choices of power. The 55kW motor now makes 66kW while the 66kW goes up to 81kW. For the 77kW model power is increased to 96kW. Not even the smallest 1.2 TSI could be spared ABT treatment as it goes from 77kW to a preppy 96kW.

Performance and aerodynamics equipment installed includes Z 8x18 inch ABT wheels, mid-mounted double chrome tailpipes, a rear apron insert and a rear spoiler. ABT recommends that buyers opt for its branded springs to add an extra dimension of dynamism to the hot hatch.

The interior is said to make passengers feel excited as well while the ladies are expected to fall in love right there and then. Actually the latter would fall in love with the car and not necessarily the driver. Stuff installed includes an ABT gear lever and ABT floor mats.

Traffic noise bad for your health

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=893

Sitting in traffic can get your blood boiling temporarily but living near it might raise your risk of high blood pressure long-term, according to a Swedish study.

Researchers from Lund University Hospital found that among 24 238 Swedish adults aged between 18 and 80, those living near noisier roads were more likely to report having high blood pressure than those living in more peaceful surroundings.

"Road traffic is the most important source of commmunity noise," said research Theo Bodin in a statement.

"We found that exposure above 60 decibels was associated with high blood pressure among the relatively young and middle-aged, an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke."

Middle-aged adults with the highest traffic-noise exposure - averaging more than 64 decibels which is just louder than an ordinary conversation - were almost twice as likely to report high blood pressure compared to other people.

Of the adults aged 40 to 59, 28% of those with the highest traffic noise exposure said they had high blood pressure compared to 17% living nearer to quieter roads.

A similar pattern was seen among young adults but not among the elderly which the researchers suggested was because older people had multiple risk factors for high blood pressure.

Stressful situation

"The effect of noise may become less important, or harder to detect, relative to other risk factors with increasing age. Alternatively, it could be that noise annoyance varies with age," said Bodin.

He said figures show that 30% of the population of the European Union hears an average traffic noise exceeding 55 decibels around the clock.

The findings, published in the online journal Environmental Health, which involved calculating the average 24-hour traffic noise level in the area were people lived, add to evidence that chronic noise exposure may spell health trouble.

Other studies have found that people living near airports or working in noisy jobs have an increased risk of high blood pressure and heart attack.

The theory is that noise essentially signals to the body that it's in a stressful situation and so chronic exposure may cause long-term increases in stress hormone production, heart rate and blood pressure. Noise can also disrupt sleep.

But the Swedish researchers said the current findings do not prove that nearby traffic caused study participants' high blood pressure but suggest it might have been a factor in some cases.

The researchers did not measure participants' blood pressure but just asked them if they had high blood pressure.

They said more research was needed into how much effect noise has on health.

Parents poor examples for teens

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=880

Parents in the United States are setting a poor example behind the wheel for their teenaged children by talking and texting on cell phones and speeding.

Nearly 60% of 500 parents with teenage children questioned in an online survey admitted that they chatted on their cells while driving. Forty-two percent said they were guilty of speeding and 17% sent a text or email.

Another 40% listened to loud music while driving.

"Teens get safe driving examples and advice from many sources - television ads, driving instructors, friends and family members, but no one more than Mom or Dad," Dave Melton, a driving safety expert with the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, said in a statement.

"And if they grow up watching their Mom or Dad speed, talk on their cell phone, text and email, or pay more attention to what's on the radio than their driving, they are going to think it's okay to do the same thing.

Despite bans on driving-while-texting, or DWT, in 14 states and high-profile accidents that resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of people, a quarter of Americans who use cell phone admitted to driving while texting, according to a recent report.

Fathers bigger culprits

Last year 25 people were killed in a train crash in California and nearly 50 people were injured in a trolley crash in Boston earlier this year. Drivers in both accidents were found to be texting just before the crashes.

Fathers were the worst culprits for setting a bad example behind the wheel in the poll commissioned by insurance group Liberty Mutual, with 75% admitting to at least two dangerous driving behaviors, compared to 63 percent of%.

Men were also less likely than women to discuss safe driving with their children.

"Safe driving goes beyond learning a skill set, it's a two-way street and requires daily precautions and parental enforcement with clear rewards and consequences," said Stephen Wallace, the chairman of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) a national education, prevention and activism group.

"While Moms are more likely to continue to treat safe teen driving as a priority after their teens pass their driving tests, Dads tend to let driving enforcement slip," he added.

Traffic cop locked in boot

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=881

A Malawian motorist was arrested after he allegedly grabbed a traffic policeman and locked him in the boot of his car, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the officer was doing point duty in Mthatha on Sunday evening when an angry motorist stopped.

"He just grabbed the officer and threw him in the boot. Then he locked it.

"This is not normal. The suspect hijacked a traffic policeman in uniform," said Fatyela.

Witnesses alerted police and the motorist was later stopped and arrested.

He was due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court soon on a charge of kidnapping and assault, said Fatyel.

Manhart Racing BMW M3 E92 V10

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=882

Manhart Racing has unveiled the new BMW M3 E92 5.0 V10 SMG.

As the lengthy name implies, Manhart has shoehorned the M5/M6's 5.0-liter V10 engine into a M3 coupe. The company didn't stop there as they removed the speed limiter and added a seven-speed SMG gearbox, a DME steering system, and a titanium exhaust with four 84mm (3.3") tailpipes. Thanks to all these modifications, the 405 kW M3 V10 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds before topping out at 334 km/h.

In terms of styling, Manhart outfitted the car with new front and rear spoilers, a rear diffuser, a Bilstein coilover suspension, and 20-inch BBS 'Challenge R' wheels. Inside, the company added carbon fiber trim, alcantara and leather upholstery, and a new steering wheel "with illuminated rocker switches, ¼ mile and side acceleration displays."

Upgraded Abarth Grande Punto SuperSport

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=883

The new Abarth Grande Punto SuperSport (SS) has been launched by Fiat.

Abarth is Fiat's performance division and the Grande Punto SS comes with a 1.4 liter gasoline/petrol engine dialed up to a robustly impressive 132 kW and an even more impressive 270 Nm of torque at a substantially early 3,000 rpm. The SS does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 215 km/h.

To properly manage that additional power and provide for the sporty ride, the SS gets a stiffened suspension with new springs which also let the car sit 20 mm lower. 18-inch wheels are also part of the set, coming with 215/40 R18 tires. The brake system gets perforated discs all around and performance pads at the front.

Notable here is the telematics system developed with partner Magneti Marelli - the Abarth Blue&Me MAP satellite navigation system - which takes data from the car including engine speed, vehicle speed and the gear engaged to be monitored from the nav system. It also offers a function called Track, which can provide the driver with a position and lap time on race tracks that are in the system's memory.

The Abarth Grande Punto SS comes in the traditional color of Airfield Grey while inside are the "Abarth Corsa by Sabelt" leather seats.

The updated Abarth Grande Punto SS went on sale last weekend (September 12/13).

2010 Volvo C30 R-Design Facelift

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=884

Volvo has announced plans to introduce the facelifted 2010 C30 R-Design at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Debuting alongside the updated C30 and C70 convertible, the R-Design is described as "the nearest thing to a dedicated sports car" that Volvo makes. To ensure this statement carries weight, the car features a number of sporty touches both cosmetic and mechanical.

In terms of styling, the R-Design is outfitted with unique 'silk metal' accents, an exclusive monotone body kit, a roof-mounted spoiler, 17-inch five-spoke 'Cratus' aluminum wheels (18-inchers are optional), and chrome-plated exhaust tips.

Inside, the C30 boasts two-tone seats, a leather and aluminum gear knob, and a sports steering wheel. Other goodies include aluminum pedals, floor mats with contrasting piping, blue instrument gauges, and plenty of R-Design logos.

On the performance side, Volvo stiffened the springs 30%, lowered the ride height 10mm, added sportier mono-tube dampers, and beefed up the roll stabilizers. To improve the steering, the company added stiffer bushings and lowered the ratio to give drivers a 10% faster response.

According to Stefan Sällqvist, manager of Vehicle Dynamics, "The driver should feel confident that the car will behave exactly as expected. That is an important part of our safety focus when we develop new chassis. This feeling of security also means the driver can fully enjoy the sporty driving characteristics."

VW Golf R Uncovered

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=885

Volkswagen is unveiling the second new R model in its current lineup at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Golf R shares its basic underpinnings with the recently-unveiled Scirocco R. It also adds VW's 4Motion AWD to its architecture.

Replacing the heavy naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 found in the Golf V R32 is a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine. Power is 195kW and torque is around the 350Nm mark. The 0 - 100km/h time should be covered in about 6.5 seconds for the 6-speed manual and 6.4 seconds for the DSG model. These figures compare very well with the Audi S3 and the TT S with which the Golf R shares its engine.

If you thought it would be a basic upgrade on the GTI you'd be wrong. The car features a host of changes including new front grille with LED daytime running lights, a different set of wheels, R side sills, R badging at the rear and those twin tailpipes almost come together in the middle. The interior is much sportier as well with two-tone sports seats, aluminum pedals and R badging in places like the flat-bottomed steering wheel.

The good news for US fans is that the Golf R is headed for North America according to reports, although nothing has been confirmed for its 3-door Scirocco relative.

Sportec RS425 based on Audi S4 Avant

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=886

Quick mamas are in for quite a neat treat. Tuning firm Sportec has taken the stock Audi S4 Avant and made it something a bit more interesting. By remapping the engine control unit and installing sport air filters, more power and torque have been extracted for the car they call the Sportec RS425.

Where the ordinary cargo pusher makes 245kW, Sportec has gifted it with 313kW which just about matches the previous-generation RS 6. And where your neighbourhood mama gets 440Nm out of her S4 Avant, the RS425 option will give out a compelling 520Nm. The 0 - 100km/h time has been slashed from 5.6 seconds to 5.2 seconds, making the proverbial supermarket run something of a breeze. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, same as in the factory car. All that performance comes from the supercharged 3.0-litre V6.

Other upgrades include a carbon fibre front spoiler, a special sports silencer, four tailpipes (two on either side), a carbon fibre rear diffuser, a lower suspension system and 9 x 20 inch large lightweight metal rims wrapped in 245/30 tyres.

Mercedes SLS AMG

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=887

The traditional coupe roaster has a long bonnet, a very low profile, short overhangs and a small boot. Only two people can sit in it. The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG fits this definition and then some. Already confirmed as a Frankfurt debutant the SLS you see here stars in its own video show where its makers showcase some of its abilities on a track and on the road.

A main attraction is the sound emanating from the shiny twin trapezoidal tailpipes, urged on by the naturally aspirated 6.3-litre AMG V8. You can hear a lot of the sound if you put up the volume as it accelerates into the straight or when cornering. The eardrums will forever be thankful. Forgive some of the background music; this is a promotional video after all not a hooligan road test.

Trapped inside the 8 cylinders is 420kW that is accessed by the driver through the 7-speed double clutch gearbox and the round 3-stage ESP knob which changes the suspension's characteristics from everyday comfort to sharp and sporty.

The SLS will start selling before the end of the year and compete with the likes of McLaren MP4-12C, the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Flashy ministers 'insensitive'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=876

Ministers who bought flashy cars should have been more sensitive to the fact the country was in recession, ANC deputy secretary-general Thandi Modise said on Thursday.

"They should have bought cars considering... that we do have a recession... they should have been sensitive to that," she told the SA Democratic Teachers Union's (Sadtu) national general council in Benoni.

Modise said people in government jobs should know they were not permanent positions.

The tripartite alliance has been embroiled in a spat over the expensive cars purchased by Cabinet ministers.

Strength in the alliance

SA Communist Party leader and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande bought a R1.1m seven series BMW. ANC and SACP alliance partner, the Congress of SA Trade Unions, called on all Cabinet members who spent more than R1m on official vehicles to return them.

She also called on the Sadtu council to ask itself whether they wanted to keep the alliance between the ANC, the SACP and Cosatu strong.

"We must interrogate whether that strategic relationship of the alliance is still relevant," she said, adding that they should be frank with each other to build the alliance.

Modise said "disorganisation" was driving the many strikes in the country and "eating the movement up".

Not tolerating mediocrity

She bemoaned the country's skills shortage. Municipalities in the country were sorely in need of managerial and financial skills.

Turning to education, Modise urged teachers not to tolerate mediocrity among their ranks.

She chastised some sections of Sadtu who said teachers who abused children should not be named and shamed.

"The teacher is a guide, the teacher is a parent, the teacher is a marriage counsellor... the teacher is a moulder of young minds, the determiner of the future.

"The teacher is a role model. That is why some of us are hard on teachers," she said.

Education was the "biggest unifier" in South African society.

"Building a non-racist, non-sexist South Africa must start in the classroom."

Mercedes GLK 280 V6 from the Lorinser

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=877

Lorinser has unveiled a modified Mercedes GLK 280 V6 to highlight their expansion into the world of custom paintwork.

Boasting a "fiery opal" paint job, the GLK is outfitted with a body kit that features new front and rear aprons, larger fog lights, and aggressive side sills. Other touches include a quad stainless steel exhaust system and matte black 9 x 22 inch Lorinser RS 9 light-alloy wheels outfitted with Yokohama tires.

While details are limited, the custom paintwork will be available from the Lorinser Collection. This is an odd choice since the department normally deals in merchandise such as Lorinser branded shirts, hats, and umbrellas (etc).

Brabus E V12 Unleashed - The Black Baron

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=878

Brabus has unveiled the limited edition E V12 sedan.

Based on the new 2010 Mercedes E-Class W 212, the E V12 features a 6.0-liter V12 biturbo bored out to 6.3-liters producing 588kW and 1420 Nm of torque (it's electronically limited to 1,100 Nm). While details are limited, Brabus outfitted the engine with a ram-air system, a quad-exhaust, and revised engine electronics.

To keep the beast under control, the company added a fully adjustable sports suspension, new stabilizers, a high performance braking system, and black 19-inch alloy wheels outfitted with 255/35 (front) and 285/35 (rear) tires.

In terms of styling, Brabus made major modifications to improve aerodynamics, engine ventilation, and brake cooling. Changes include a revised front bumper, new front quarter panels, aggressive side sills, and rear wheel covers. Out back, the car features a trunk-mounted spoiler and a carbon fiber rear diffuser.

Thanks to all these tweaks, the E V12 rockets from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 9.9 seconds, and 0-300 km/h in 23.9 seconds. If you keep your foot planted, the car will eventually top out at an electronically limited 350 km/h. Without the limiter, Brabus estimates the car can hit a top speed in excess of 370 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 15.7L/100km, while CO2 emissions are 372 g/km.

Inside, the car features black leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, carbon fiber trim, and a 400 km/h speedometer.

Hijacked by 'injured man'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=879

Two men were hijacked in separate incidents with their attackers using similar tactics to get their cars, Tembisa police said on Sunday.

The first man was hijacked on Modderfontein road in Rabie Ridge after stopping his car to assist what he thought was an injured man sprawled across the road ahead of him on Saturday night.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said the man was approaching an intersection when he noticed two men at the robot "pretending" to be assisting the one sprawled on the road.

"Thinking that the man was injured, he stopped his car and he suddenly saw a fourth man pointing a firearm at him. The three who had been in the centre of the road also approached and they dragged him out of the vehicle," said Rhalidzhivha.

The men then drove off with the 45-year-old's Nissan double bakkie cab, leaving him alone on the road.

Left in the road

Fortunately for the man, a police station was just 500 metres away and he managed to walk there and report the hijacking.

He was not harmed.

On Sunday morning, a 19-year-old man driving on Green Avenue near Kempton Park was also hijacked after stopping his car to avoid bumping people "running on the road" in front of him at 01:00.

"When he stopped for fear of hitting them, they smashed his side window, got into his car and pushed him aside before driving off," said Ralidzhivha.

The hijackers then drove around with the man for about an hour before returning to the crime scene and dumping him there.

New modus operandi

They drove off in his Mercedez Benz without harming him, he said.

No arrests have been made.

"We advise people to be vigilant while driving at night... it seems this is a new modus operandi," said Ralidzhivha.

GM to sell Opel & Vauxhall to Magna

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=874

GM has announced that they will support a sale of Opel and Vauxhall to a group of investors fronted by auto parts manufacturer Magna International. The final decision to sell rests in the hands of the Opel Trust, which is comprised of five board members.

Two of those members were picked by the German government, which has openly supported the Magna bid, and will provide billions of euros in bridge loans to keep the operation running as smoothly as possible. Two other board members were picked by GM, and were previously believed to support Belgian investment firm RHJ International's bid.

According to a press release issued by General Motors, the American automaker will retain 35% of the two brands, while the brands' employees will keep 10%. That leaves a majority stake of 55% for Magna, which is also being supported financially in the agreement by Sberbank.

Labor unions involved will need to sign off on the deal, which they are largely expected to do. Magna and Sberbank were supported by labor, the German government, and several regional German governments because of their vision for the brands, and willingness to keep on as many employees as possible. RHJ International was largely perceived to be in the running to turn a quick profit.

One GM concern over a sale to Magna is the issue of technology sharing and parts purchasing. Chief amongst the concerns is the Russian market, where Russian manufacturer OAO GAZ has expressed interest in producing 180,000 vehicles for Opel in their home country. Opel and Vauxhall will be bringing to market the Ampera, their rebadged versions of GM's heaviest recent investment, the mostly-electric Chevy Volt, and GM is keen to protect their investment. To this, GM says in the release, "Participating in GM’s global technology development and purchasing organizations secures important economies of scale for Opel/Vauxhall and other GM brands. For example, vehicles that represent new propulsion technologies, such as the Ampera extended-range electric vehicle, can only be brought to market in a joint effort."

“GM operates many joint ventures around the world and has proven in the past that this business model delivers the right balance of independence, innovation and synergies,” said Opel Trust board member and GM executive John Smith. “All parties will work hard to close the deal as soon as possible."

It is a change in tune for Smith, who had previously called the RHJ deal a "simpler proposal" compared to the rival bid from Magna.

Opel and Vauxhall employ 50,000 across Europe, over half of which are based in Germany. The deal with Magna will likely boost popularity of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was criticized for her refusal to support any Opel proposal other than that from Magna. Merkel is up for re-election later this month.

Volvo issues recall

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=875

Volvo Cars said on Wednesday it would recall 26 000 cars worldwide due to faulty software that causes engine problems.

"It's the electronic module which under certain circumstances does not work as it should," a spokesperson said.

The result is that the vehicle might have problems starting.

According to Volvo South Africa the only models which are affected locally are the 3.0T derivatives of the S80 and XC70 sold in 2008 and 2009.

Volvo informed that the faulty software won’t affect the car's safety and that the upgrade to fix the problem takes 18 minutes.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted.
