Joburg cops impound 52 taxis

Some 52 taxis were impounded by police at the Bree street taxi rank in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

A traffic policeman at the scene told a Sapa reporter the taxis would be taken to the "Benoni pound".

The impounded taxis drove in convoy to the N1 south with police cars leading the way.

"Where is the driver of this car?" one police official asked another of an abandoned taxi.

"It seems the driver has run away," another police inspector answered.

The taxi was then stripped of its licence plates and licence disc while some taxi drivers watched.

Commuters turned away

Police had closed roads in and out of the taxi rank and asked to see drivers' permits.

At around 11:35 only a handful of police cars were still at the rank.

Earlier, commuters had to be turned away from the rank as minibus taxi drivers refused to transport them to avoid the police outside, according to a Sapa reporter on the scene.

Roads in and out of the taxi rank were barricaded by police cars and taxis were queuing up on the streets as they were checked for permits.

Drink relaxes 'jumpy' drivers

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=974

A politician from Ireland's governing party has said "jumpy" drivers might benefit from having a relaxing alcoholic drink to steady their nerves.

Ireland is gripped by a feisty debate over government plans to cut the legal blood alcohol content limit for motorists to 50 mg per 100 ml from 80 mg to try to reduce road accidents.

Some 20 members of parliament from Prime Minister Brian Cowen's Fianna Fail party oppose lowering the limit which would rule out a traditional Irish pint of Guinness for those driving.

"If drink is such a sedative, it can make people who are jumpy on the road, or nervous, be more relaxed," said Mattie McGrath, Fianna Fail's Tipperary South representative, speaking out in favour of a modest tipple.

There was no evidence to back up McGrath's claim which made the front page of most Irish papers, said the AA motoring group.

"It's an old wives' tale," said AA Director of Policy Conor Faughnan, adding: "You will get people who'll tell you that smoking is good for you based on a granny who lived to be 95."

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=975

Germany-based tuners IMSA GmbH have released their package of upgrades for the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 following an initial preview back in February. The IMSA GTV kit was created from scratch, and comes with several carbon-fiber body panels.

A height-adjustable sports chassis was also used, with the mods capped by the polished stainless steel exhaust pipes. The new exhaust led to a 5% power increase to 434 kW and up to 560 Nm of torque, nearly a 4% increase.

Included in the modifications are front and rear aprons, front and rear fender flares, side skirts, and a new rear wing. The company decided to use the same central-locking wheels found on vehicles in the IMSA Challenge. Lightweight 9Jx20 with 245/30 ZR20 tires, and 12.5Jx20 with 325/25ZR20 dimension tires are found in the front and back.

Carbon fiber bucket seats were also thrown into the package, as well as other composite interior parts. Leather and Alcantara rounds out the order.

Ford Confirms Geely as Preferred Volvo Bidder

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=976

Chinese motor manufacturer Geely has emerged as the front runner in the race to acquire the Volvo Car Corporation from owner Ford Motor Company. Geely is the fourth largest vehicle exporter in China having pushed over 40,000 units globally in 2008.

"Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," said Lewis Booth, Ford Motor Company executive vice president and chief financial officer. "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy."

Booth stated that his company believes Geely will be a responsible owner, one that continues Volvo's Swedish traditions and keeps its core values intact. Any new Volvo proprietor would take sole ownership since Ford has no intention of keeping any shareholding. However cooperation would proceed in some key areas such as component supply, engineering and manufacturing.

Ford says it is maintaining continuous talks with shareholders, unions and the Swedish government regarding these and other proposals for the European premium automaker.

Prior-Design BMW M6 Wide-Body Styling Kit

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=977

Prior Design presents a new wide body styling kit for the BMW M6. The finished car kit is called the PD550 and features some revisions for the V10-powered M6. The tuner did not mess with the front end too much, preferring to keep it as close to the familiar simple and elegant look as possible.

The aerodynamic kit includes revised front wings, new side skirts and new rear fender flares. A hand-made PD silencer accompanies four stainless steel pipes said to please the ear even from miles away. The body was widened by some 80mm to improve handling and offer sportier dynamics. If this is too much Prior Design has a second complete but non-wide kit called the PD450.

A choice of two wheel/ tyre combinations are possible; FA 9.0 J x 20 / RA 10.5 J x 20 with 255/35 ZR 20 / 285/30 ZR 20 tyres or FA 9.0 J x 21 / RA 10.5 J x 21 with 255/30 ZR 21 / 295/25 ZR 21. The suspension can be lowered by up to 30mm up front and 25mm at the rear which gives the PD550 a real squatting position.
