Is Uwe chilling out in Luanda?

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1350

The sordid affair surrounding the disappearance of German tuning guru Uwe Gemballa continues after his family withdrew the reward for information which could lead to tracing his whereabouts.

Gemballa, who is renowned for his outlandish embellishments and performance upgrades of Porsche and Ferrari products for the rich and famous, went missing after arriving at OR Tambo 8 February.

Initially Gemballa was rumoured to have been kidnapped.

His last known contact with his wife was a call made shortly after arriving in South Africa. Gemballa curiously detailed he had been in an accident and needed funds to be wired to a specific account immediately.
It was hardly a negligible amount either - Uwe wanted €1m to be transferred.

Kidnapped?

Due to South Africa’s high crime rate – and Gauteng’s notorious reputation for violent crime internationally – any notion of Gemballa being on the run from a financial malaise back at home was never tabled.

German authorities deployed a two-man investigative team to South Africa just after Gemballa’s disappearance in mid February.

A spokesperson at Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co, Ekkehard Krebs, said the presence of German investigators at the company’s headquarters were simply a part of the missing persons investigation. Customers were assured work was continuing as usual.

Or on the run?

Then, two weeks ago, Gemballa's wife, who was suspiciously given power of attorney by Uwe before he left for South Africa, applied for provisional liquidation of Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co at the Ludwigsburg court.

Even stranger, was Uwe updating Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co's records with details of a new company he had opened - with his 79-year-old mother as sole stockholder...The new company is cryptically named Gemballa Sports Cars GmbH & Co.

The German aftermarket tuning industry – which sets the global standard in automotive modification, performance upgrades and design – is at a lost how one of their most famous sons could simply go underground with such expedience.

Germany media sources indicate the Bundesrepublik’s investigate team has now returned home from South Africa with no information about Gemballa’s whereabouts.

Domestically, German authorities are now amplifying the investigation to one of financial crime (instead of a simple missing persons hunt) surrounding the peculiar state of affairs leading up to Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co’s liquidation.

The Czech connection

An interesting aside to Uwe’s disappearance is that Czech billionaire Radovan Krejcír was supposed to provide capital for a Gemballa franchise in South Africa.

The billionaire central European businessman avoided extradition to his native Czech Republic in 2005 for tax fraud (after being sentenced in absentia) after a Johannesburg High Court judgement.

Krejcír contends he never managed to meet Gemballa at OR Tambo and has no idea where the German national currently is. A clue to Gemballa’s current whereabouts might be found in Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co’s global presence...

An Atlantic coast hideaway?

Germany's car industry, even if you are an aftermarket tuner, thrived on exports.

Predictably, Gemballa operated exports to some of the world’s most prosperous automotive markets. He had a presence via agents in North America, Asia, Australia and even one, bizarrely, in Angola.

How many Gemballa modified cars have you seen on the streets of Luanda? Exactly. If we were looking for Uwe, we’d be checking out the Luanda waterfront’s cafés.

Meanwhile, his 40 members staff back in Germany (not to mention numerous customers globally) face an uncertain future as the insolvency of Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co becomes procedural.

Conversely, the actual content and purpose of Uwe's new company, Gemballa Sports Cars GmbH & Co, remains dreadfully uncertain. We can’t really see Uwe’s grandmother fashioning ECU remapping diagrams for the new Cayenne either...

Unsurprisingly, Uwe’s family has retracted the €10 000 reward for any information which might lead to the location of his whereabouts.

Aston Martin DBS by Edo Competition

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1351

Edo Competition has unveiled their tuning program for the Aston Martin DBS.

To beef up the sexy beast, Edo installed revised ECU software, a new exhaust system, special catalytic converters, and high flow air filters. Thanks to these changes, the DBS produces 405 kW and 600 Nm of torque - an increase of 25 kW and 30 Nm. This enables the car to rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 320 km/h.

Underneath, the company added a high performance brake system, 21-inch wheels, and an adjustable sports suspension (which can vary the ride height, spring compression and rebound damping).

Inside, customers can order carbon fiber trim or exclusive leather upholstery in a color of their choice.

Cargraphic Power Pack for Porsche Panamera Turbo

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1352

Cargraphic has revealed a tuning package for the Porsche Panamera Turbo that takes this five-door GT from a standard 368 kW up to 405kW. Extra power was attained through a DME control unit and two sport air filters that allow more air for the turbo to use.

The tuner has kept Porsche's 7-speed PDK transmission and it places this power well on the road through the AWD system. Cargraphic says the car will go from 0 - 100km/h in under four seconds. We can't help but wonder if a possible official Panamera Turbo S would offer similar figures.

Personalisation options include the wheels which start with the 19-inch IS-ONE type and go up to 22-inch forged wheels. They can even let buyers choose what colour these rims can be.

Toyota boss urges 'new start'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1343

Toyota President Akio Toyoda urged thousands of his employees Friday to work toward a new start and win back customer trust following safety lapses that have battered the world's biggest carmaker.

"Let's go with high spirits, have fun and be confident while staying humble," Toyoda, choking up and wearing a gray workman's jacket, told 2 000 workers packed into the company's headquarters. "We are making a start today."

His address, billed as "An Urgent Meeting for All Toyota - Toward a New Beginning for Toyota," was also watched via live video by 7 000 workers at company plants. Representatives of suppliers and dealers also attended the event in the Japanese city named after the automaker.

Toyoda returned to Japan earlier this week after being grilled by U.S. lawmakers in a congressional hearing on the spate of quality lapses that include braking problems and sticking gas pedals. The problems have resulted in global recalls of 8.5 million vehicles, 6 million of them in the U.S.

Other executives who appeared before congressional hearings on Toyota's recalls also attended Friday's event.

Workers heartbroken

The head of Toyota's North American sales unit, Jim Lentz, assured the crowd the company was working hard to restore customer trust. He urged all to be prepared for "a long road ahead" of harsh criticism.

Workers, who applauded executive speeches, said they were moved.

"I could feel the president's anguish, and I felt we all must work harder," Hideki Watanabe, 51, a Lexus engineer, said after the 45-minute meeting. "It breaks my heart to think that the cars we are making to bring joy to people might cause sorrow and accidents."

U.S. transport regulators have linked 52 deaths to crashes allegedly caused by sudden, unintended acceleration in Toyota cars.

An executive vice president, Takeshi Uchiyamada, said the Toyota brand was in "a serious crisis," acknowledging the company must improve monitoring of consumer complaints and respond more quickly during crises.

Toyota has been widely criticized, especially in the U.S., where most of the recalls have happened, as slow and unresponsive, and doubts are growing it may not be transparent or forthright about defects.

"The path to regaining trust remains tremendously difficult," Uchiyamada said. "But I would like to work with all of you."

'Toyota fixes didn't work'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1344

U.S. regulators said on Thursday they were reviewing more than 60 complaints that fixes made on recalled Toyota Motor Corp vehicles for unintended acceleration had not solved the problem.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement it was reviewing the complaints and interviewing vehicle owners. The agency stressed that the complaints are unproven allegations.

The agency has also asked Toyota to provide information about any complaints it has received.

Toyota said on Wednesday after NHTSA reported the first 10 complaints that it, too, would move quickly to investigate the matter. The automaker said its recall remedies were rigorously tested.

US government flexes muscle

NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said on Thursday that regulators were "determined to get to the bottom" of complaints. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told a Senate committee earlier in the day Toyota owners should bring their cars back to dealers if they are still having problems.

The government said it has the authority to order Toyota to provide a different solution if it appears that remedies are not working. NHTSA did not object to the company's recall fixes.

Toyota said this week it had fixed more than 1 million of the more than 6 million cars and trucks subject to recalls in October 2009 and January. Recalls covered loose floor mats that can jam the accelerator and gas pedals that do not spring back as designed.

NHTSA is reviewing whether there are glitches with Lexus and Toyota electronic throttles as a possible explanation for unintended acceleration.

Toyota, which has hired an independent consulting firm to study the issue, has said it has tested the systems exhaustively and found no problems. Congress has sharply criticized NHTSA for its handling of previous complaints about electronic throttles.

Separately, Edmunds.com, an online research source for consumers, said Toyota's newly unveiled purchase incentives including interest-free loans and free maintenance have noticeably boosted interest in the company's vehicles among prospective buyers. Kelley Blue Book also noted a spike in traffic for Toyota.

RUF RGT-8 Revealed with V8 Engine Transplant

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1345

Based on the current 997 Porsche 911, the RGT-8 "is powered by a completely new RUF designed V8 engine with a 180° crankshaft flatcrank." It features "four valves arranged spherically together with multipoint fuel injection [which] ensure optimal mixture conditions while the dry-sump system supplies the necessary lubrication." Boasting a capacity of 4.5-liters, the V8 produces 404 kW and 500 Nm of torque.

To ensure maximum sportiness, RUF made the RGT-8 as light as possible. It comes with aluminum doors, an aluminum hood, a carbon fiber engine cover, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler. Other performance goodies include ceramic brakes, an integrated roll-cage, and 19-inch forged alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

In terms of styling, the RGT-8 remains pretty faithful to the standard 911. However, if you want a more exclusive appearance, RUF offers a Frère package. Inspired by the 550 Coupe, that Paul Frère drove to victory in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Frère package consists of redesigned front fenders, a unique front end, and special interior trim.

RUF is planning to launch the RGT-8 in 2011, so look for more information to be released later this year.

2010 Audi A8 by Hofele Design

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1349

German tuners Hofele have released details about their new package of mods for the Audi A8 (D4). The kits release coincides with Audi's reveal of the new version of their flagship four-door.

A press release claims that the car realizes faster acceleration times of 5.2- and 5.3-seconds to 100 km/h depending on petrol or diesel engine. The petrol 4.2-liter FSI V8 has been improved to 294 kW and up to 475 Nm of torque, while the TDI is boosted to 290 kW and up to 880 Nm. Fuel consumption remains at 9.5- and 7.6-liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, for the petrol and diesel, respectively.

Extra power brings the need for extra brake power, which is provided by larger, ventilated steel disc brakes that can be swapped for ceramic discs. Six-piston brakes were also added. The car's suspension is lowered by between 40 and 80 millimeters, though it returns back to its original factory setting when traveling at 129 km/h and over. New alloy wheels measure 9.5x20" front and 10x22" in back, which look like a tight squeeze thanks to the lower wheel wells.

Other mods include a new front end with larger air inlets and front fender outlets, redesigned side sills, and a remodeled rear bumper with diffuser and quad exhaust. A decklid spoiler has also been added. Inside, quilted two-tone leather, Alcantara, and a new steering wheel can all be found.

Pricing for the Hofele Audi A8 kit was not released.

Not bad... 148kW... so comparatively... 182kW

My car didn't do bad at all at the dyno day, was pleasantly surprised.

6 March 2010 - OOC NASCAR Dyno Day

I went along to see what his OPC can do and take some pictures for those who couldn't make it.

He managed to get 148kW at the wheels. Now before people start making comments, the dyno was run with 0% correction factors... so these readings are the wheel power as measured at that day.

Enjoy the pictures.

Mitsubishi & PSA tie-up crumbles

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1334

Japan's Mitsubishi Motors and France's Peugeot Citroen Wednesday scrapped an ambitious capital tie-up that would have created the world's sixth-largest auto alliance, after reports of financial discord.

The companies in December confirmed they had discussed strengthening ties and a possible financial alliance after media in Japan reported Peugeot was planning to buy a 30 to 50 percent stake in the debt-laden Japanese maker.

But on Wednesday they said a tie-up "was not appropriate in the current circumstances", a day after PSA Peugeot chief Philippe Varin and Mitsubishi Motors president Osamu Masuko met at the Geneva Motor Show.

When the talks were announced in December, analysts said such a deal would give Peugeot access to Mitsubishi's advanced electric car systems and open the Japanese firm's sales networks in Asian markets and the United States.

However, in January the French business newspaper Les Echos reported that discussions were stuck on disagreement over the valuation of the two groups because Mitsubishi carried a higher stock market valuation than PSA.

Existing agreement

Despite the breakdown, Peugeot and Mitsubishi, maker of the i-MiEV electric city car, pledged to "broaden the current successful cooperation of the two companies", a joint statement said.

Both companies have already agreed on other forms of cooperation and plan to launch the i-MiEV under the Peugeot brand in Europe this year.

They are also building a joint sports utility vehicle plant in Russia.

"We will continue working with Peugeot on the new Russian factory, which we are jointly constructing," said Mitsubishi spokesman Shigeru Jibiki.

"We plan to start full production there in 2012, when Peugeot will kick off its output in April and Mitsubishi in October."

Mamoru Kato, an auto analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Centre, said a capital alliance between the car makers is still possible in future.

"The statement only ruled out a capital alliance at this time," Kato said.

"It's just not the right timing as the end-March accounting book closing approaches for Mitsubishi Motors, which needs to have specific figures for negotiations," he told AFP.

"With global tie-ups and mergers going on in the auto industry, the two companies' policy of joining hands firmly will remain intact," Kato said, adding both need to seek higher sales volumes.

Japan's fourth-biggest automaker Mitsubishi Motors last month announced a net loss of 25.7 billion yen for the nine months to December, hit by the economic downturn and a stronger yen.

For the full financial year, Mitsubishi Motors kept unchanged its forecasts for a net profit of five billion yen.

Needs

Another industry analyst who asked not to be named said Peugeot would hardly benefit from a capital tie-up with the Japanese company.

"It's a debt-ridden company with market capitalisation of 700 billion yen (7.9 billion dollars)," he said of the Japanese company.

"PSA Peugeot would need to get a decent equity stake if it wants to have control over Mitsubishi's management," he said. "It would be a very high-priced but risky purchase."

The analyst called the failure to agree a tie-up now "a blow to Mitsubishi Motors. Some companies within the Mitsubishi group, such as a trading house and banking units, also want to sell their shares in Mitsubishi Motors."

"The only bright thing in Mitsubishi Motors is electric vehicles, but it does not have enough money to spend on the new technology ... Mitsubishi Motors need a partner who has a larger sales network to spread its electric vehicles."

Police launch cellphone blitz

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1335

Traffic authorities on Wednesday launched a month-long cellphone and seatbelt blitz in Cape Town.

The province and the city said in a statement that research showed that motorists using cellphones while driving were less
capable than drunk drivers.

Mayoral committee member JP Smith said phoning while driving resulted in avoidable accidents and fatalities.

"We hope this blitz will significantly reverse the reckless trend of using a cell phone while driving," he said.

City law enforcement officials recorded 661 cellphone offences and 3034 seatbelt offences in January.

BMW Alpina B3 S Biturbo Revealed with 294kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1336

Originally launched in Geneva 2007 (as the B3 BiTurbo - notice the missing 'S'), the B3 S Biturbo features "improved performance and torque with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions." It was designed to combine "explosive performance with a high level of comfort and everyday usability, addressing the needs of an unusually broad target group of automotive connoisseurs."

Broad is an understatement - the B3 S Biturbo is available as a Sedan, Coupe, Estate, or Convertible (with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive). Regardless of body style is selected, owners will be rewarded with a powerful 3.0-liter engine that produces 294 kW and 540 Nm of torque. In order to eke out the extra performance, ALPINA engineers optimized the air intake and air filter (in terms of pressure loss), added a new exhaust system (which optimizes back pressure), installed high-strength MAHLE pistons (which allow for a maximum boost of 1.2 bar with a compression ratio of 9.4:1), and put in a high-performance cooling system.

Thanks to the engine modifications, the B3 S Biturbo can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 300km/h. In terms of efficiency, the car can achieve up to 9.7 l/100km while emitting 224-225 g/km of CO2 in the combined EU test cycle.

As always, ALPINA added some modest styling tweaks to separate the B3 S Biturbo from the standard BMW 3-Series. Highlights include 19-inch light-alloy wheels, a new rear valance (on the Coupe and Convertible), a front-lip spoiler, a leather sports steering wheel, and a unique ALPINA instrument cluster.

Bob Lutz to retire, again

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1337

Robert "Bob" Lutz will finally retire from General Motors effective May 1, 2010. We say finally because he had announced he would retire by the end of 2009 but then made an about-turn in July last year. Lutz has been head of product development since rejoining the General in September 2001 and was last year moved into the Vice Chairman position of the new GM.

"The influence Bob Lutz has had on GM's commitment to design, build and sell the world's best vehicles will last for years to come," GM CEO and Chairman Ed Whitacre said. "I, along with many other men and women in GM and throughout the industry, have greatly benefited from his passion, wisdom and guidance."

Part of the reason Lutz, 78, says he is retiring is that several products like the Chevrolet Camaro and Cadicallc SRX are selling well. He therefore believes the company he is leaving behind is well on the way to recovery and good financial health.

Subaru Impreza XV Crosses Over in Geneva

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1339

The new Impreza XV, appearing in Geneva for the first time, rides on the Impreza's rally reputation and the utility given by its maker's crossover vehicles.

It is powered by a choice of two compact four-cylinder engines: a naturally aspirated petrol and the other a turbo diesel with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Both motors feature Subaru's boxer layout. Employed transmissions are a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual for the 2.0R petrol, while the 2.0D has a specially-developed 6-speed manual. Of course power goes to all four wheels via the symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) system.

Front suspension uses a strut-type model and the rear has a double wishbone suspension system. Subaru says this combination is sufficiently stiff for a fun drive yet at the same time provides sought-after family comfort when needed.

Some exterior features include a new front grille with the same design motif as other Subaru crossovers, a sporty front bumper, wheel arches with claddings, black aluminium roof rails and a large roof spoiler. The brake lights are made from LEDs.

Subaru adopted a two tone brown/black fabric seat arrangement for the interior. Black leather is also available as an option. The rest of it includes a 10-speaker CD/radio sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, an iPod connection and a leather-covered steering wheel with audio controls.

2010 Toyota RAV4 Unveiled at Geneva Motor Show

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1341

The new Toyota RAV4 has been presented in Geneva, 16 years after the first-generation model was first launched in Europe. The vehicle is said to be more sophisticated with a new chrome-accented front design, a horizontal bar-type front grille, framed by new headlights incorporating projector-type low beam lights and a full-width, aerodynamically styled front bumper. The rear end has LED lights.

Inside Toyota will offer customers a new leather/Alcantara seat upholstery option. Further interior goodies will include DVD and HDD navigation systems.

The Easy Flat seating system allows the rear seats to be folded down within the load space floor without removing the headrests or the seat cushions.

As far as engines are concerned, the new RAV4 has a 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol engine producing 116kW at 6,200rpm and 198Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. Its 2WD version does 0 - 100km/h in 10.2 seconds while the 4WD achieves the same speed in 10.5 seconds. The 2.2D 150 is also available in 2WD or 4WD configuration. Its maximum power output is of course 110kW and torque is 340Nm between 2,000rpm and 2,800rpm.

A 2.2D 180 version of the same engine is good for 130kW and 400Nm. Toyota says it can sprint from 0 - 100km/h in 9.3 seconds and top off at 200km/h. Available transmissions are a 6-speed manual or the Multidrive S which is Toyota's take on the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system.

Hawks - Car sellers must beware

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1327

Police have warned would-be car sellers to be aware of conmen who are fleecing motorists of their vehicles, Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi said on Tuesday.

A number of cases where motorists, who had advertised in car magazine Auto Trader were conned of their cars, had been received.

"The syndicates peruse these adverts. At random they contact the sellers and arrange to meet," Zondi said in a statement.

Usually the conmen would arrange to meet for the handover of money and the car after work or on weekends.

Dud cheques

"Owners have been given dud cheques which purport to be bank cheques. On presentation to the bank, they then realise that they are fake when banks refuse to honour them."

On one occasion, a motorist drove from the southern Cape to Johannesburg to sell her car after a prospective buyer expressed interest.

A few days before they met, the buyer claimed he was busy and could not see the motorist, but would send his driver to meet her at OR Tambo airport.

"This is one of the signs according to the police. The exchange was made and she flew back to George, a ticket that was bought by the buyer.

"On arrival, she deposited the cheque. It bounced and she was informed that it had been stolen in Pretoria."

Signs to look out for

The woman was left R395 000 poorer - the value of the car. Her insurer repudiated the claim.

Zondi said sellers should be careful of buyers who wanted to meet after hours, buyers who "get busy" just a few hours before the meeting, those who arranged to meet the seller at petrol stations or on major roads and those who paid by bank-guaranteed cheque.

"It has been found that some of the vehicles that are stolen like this have been used in the commission of crime, especially business robbery.

"So before you sell your car to a person from this sort of advertising, the seller needs to really check the background and insist on being paid upfront before they can release the car, otherwise they will lose the car and the money," said Zondi.

Lazy 'dog walker' loses licence

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1328

An English dog-owner has been fined after taking his pet for a stroll while driving next to him in his car.

Prosecutors said Paul Railton was spotted driving at low speed along a country lane in December, holding his dog's leash through the car window as the animal trotted alongside.

Railton pleaded guilty on Monday to not being in proper control of a vehicle. His lawyer, Paul Donoghue, said 23-year-old Railton acknowledged "it was a silly thing to do and there was an element of laziness" while exercising his lurcher.

Railton was ordered by magistrates in Consett, north east England, to pay a £66 fine, plus costs.

He also received three penalty points on his licence and, due to existing points, is now barred from driving for six months.

No local recall for Nissan

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1329

Nissan SA has confirmed that no local vehicles are affected following its latest global recall.

The latest in a spate of recalls to hit global car manufacturers relates to partially disengaging brake pins and, on vehicles with higher mileages, inaccurate fuel gauges.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, and Nissan assures that all vehicles currently being sold are free of these problems.

Nissan South Africa on Wednesday issued a statement saying none of the vehicles sold locally are affected.

“We would like to assure our customers that the recall pertains to vehicles sold predominantly in North America,” said Nissan SA Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Director, Johan Kleynhans.

Mansory G-Couture

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1330

Mansory's tuning team is at it again, this time taking their brash designs to the Mercedes-Benz G-class. The Mansory G-Couture began life as a Mercedes G 55 AMG, before receiving an impressive power upgrade.

Engineers boosted horsepower by nearly 147 kW to 515 kW. The already torque heavy engine sees figures rise to 880 Nm from 700. To achieve these results, the company says they replaced "the majority of the components with high-performance components from the Mercedes-Benz SLR."

The vehicle's new exterior is now made of carbon-fiber, including the roof, but excluding the windows (of course). Mansory claims the material was compressed in a "special pressure chamber," and now "no more air inclusions remain in the material. Normally, this processing method is only used in aviation and aerospace, as it is very cost-intensive." The big machine now rides on 23-inch one-piece rims wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion high-performance tires.

Inside, occupants ride in four individual seats with a center console running the entire length of the cockpit. Leather and python skin make up the interior, with aluminum pedals and sports steering wheel also thrown in.

The Mansory G-Couture is now on display at the Geneva Motor Show.

2010 World Car & Performance Car of the Year

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1331

A panel of 59 journalists have selected their finalists for the World Car of the Year, Performance Car, Green Car and Design of the Year. Of 30 World Car of the Year entrants, the jurors selected the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Polo.

Although the journalists span the globe, they are hardly distributed evenly. Only one panelist is from the African continent, and one represents all of South America.

Only cars produced in a minimum of 500 units are able to be nominated for any of the awards. To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the contender had to be in production, and sold, on at least two continents during 2009.

The group chose the Audi R8 V10, Ferrari California and Porsche 911 GT3 for the Performance Car award. For the Green Car award, three alternative fuel experts created a short-list for the full jury to vote on. In the end, the panel chose the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius and entire Volkswagen BlueMotion range. Here they cheated a bit, by choosing the Golf, Passat and Polo BlueMotion vehicles.

Of course, one wonders why the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Lexus HS 250h were not picked.

Similar to the Green Car award, the Design of the Year short-list was first created by several design experts. The jury than voted in the Chevrolet Camaro, Citroen C3 Picasso and the Kia Soul.

The winners of the seventh annual awards will be announced in April at the New York International Auto Show.

SpeedART BTR II 650 EVO Pumps Porsche 911 Turbo

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1332

German firm SpeedArt have released their latest tuner job of the Porsche 997 Turbo facelift. The SpeedArt BTR-II 650 EVO features a horsepower boost of 150 PS (110 kW / 148 hp), and torque increase of 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).

This brings output to 650 PS (478 kW / 641 hp) and up to 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. If the overboost function is still available, that could potentially raise torque to a maximum 699Nm. These power figures were achieved by changing the engine's computer, and using larger VTG turbochargers. New headers, catalytic converters and tailpipes are part of the sport exhaust. A new air filter and bigger intercoolers were also used.

The result is a 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds, and a new top speed of over 330 km/h (205 mph).

Needless to say, these speeds mean the brakes might run a bit hotter when used. For that, the company designed a front bumper that provides more air to the brakes. Also attached is a new front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser, and adjustable rear wing.

Engineers installed an adjustable sport suspension. To reduce weight, the company used Light Spoke Competition (LSC) forged twin-spoke wheels. The wheels measure 8.5x20" front and 12x20" rear, and are available in several different colors.

Other available options include a new steering wheel with paddle shifters to control the PDK transmission. Carbon fiber sport seats are availble in fabric, leather, and Alcatara, with the textiles available for other parts of the interior. Carbon fiber trim is also used.

Vehicle sales still under threat

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1322

The high jump in new car sales during February should not be intepreted as a sign that South Africa's depressed automotive sector is out of the woods, say industry experts.

New vehicle sales increased 20.5% to 39 312 units during February compared to the same month a year ago, according to figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) on Tuesday.

February's vehicle sales have increased 3.3% from January. The number of cars sold during the month is the highest seen since October 2008, which was around the time consumer demand for cars nosedived.

"The improvement should be seen in relation to the low sales levels in February 2009 which had reflected the impact of the global financial crisis," said Naamsa in a statement on Tuesday.

Vehicle sales have increased 18% over the first two months of this year, compared to January and February 2009.

However, Malcolm Gauld, vice president of sales and marketing at General Motors South Africa (GMSA) said that sales numbers may have been inflated due to rental companies boosting their fleets ahead of the Fifa World Cup.

'Not sustainable'

"This is not sustainable over the course of the year," he said.
Ford Motor Company of South Africa has echoed Gaulds' views. The car manufacturer expects that sales activity will adopt a more muted tone around the middle of this year.

"Our forecast is for a small recovery over the course of the year," said Ford.

GMSA sees the local sales market growing by around 6% to 8% this year.

Volkswagen South Africa said a recovery will be driven by the slow and steady improvement in households' economic circumstances and their willingness to request credit.

GMSA research found there may be a small change in attitude on long-term debt emerging. New vehicle finance applications increased 2% during February month on month.

Meanwhile, exports are also expected to improve this year as South Africa's major export markets emerge from recession.

Currently, exports are still down. The number of outbound cars from South Africa fell 5.1% to 14 876 vehicles in February compared to the same month last year.

"Manufacturer's projections suggested that overall industry export sales could grow by about 32% from last year's level," said Naamsa.

Volkswagen Sharan Takes a Geneva Bow

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1323

This is the third-generation version of the model and is the biggest one yet. It measures 4.85 metres long, 1.9m wide but 1.72m lower. The wheelbase is 2.92m long.

Designed by Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff (the VW brand's Chief Designer), the Sharan reflects the company's new design philosophy. The front end features styling such as the gloss black bars across the radiator grille, integrated chrome clips and a chrome VW logo. Optional bi-xenon lights can be ordered and they come with LED daytime running lights.

Another new feature is the rear sliding door aimed at making rear access easier. A choice of three base version interiors with five, six or seven seats will be available. There is also the flexible EasyFold seat system that allows seats on the second and third rows to be easily stowed away in the floor.

Some interior appointments include an electrically operated panoramic sliding roof, a 3-zone climate control system and a radio/ CD sound system as standard.

The Sharan will initially be offered with four direct injection turbo petrol (TSI) and turbo diesel (TDI) engines. At the base is a 110 kW TSI motor, followed by a 147 kW version. The TDIs push out 103 kW and 125 kW each respectively. VW says the 103kW TDI averages 5.5 litres per 100km and returns 145g/km in C02 emissions from its 70 litre fuel tank.

In European markets where it will first be available, the all-new Sharan can be ordered from this month. A full market launch is scheduled for the coming summer.

Audi A1 S-Line Sport Package

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1324

During the Geneva Motor Show, Audi released the first images of the S-Line sport package for the A1. Recently this A1 S-line was photographed during a photo shoot in Barcelona.

While details are limited, the package seems to include a revised front bumper, a larger roof-mounted spoiler, a rear diffuser, and unique wheels. Inside, owners will likely find sport seats, a sport steering wheel, and special trim.

Unfortunately, no performance upgrades are expected. This means the package could be applied to A1s with the anemic 63 kW 1.2-liter TFSI and the feeble 66 kW 1.6-liter TDI.

If that thought scares you, wait to until 2012 when the S1 is launched. As we have previously reported, the S1 is expected to use a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with approximately 132 kW.

BRABUS E V12 Coupe with 588kW Pounds into Geneva

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1325

Based on the latest Mercedes E-Class coupe, BRABUS calls this its Gran Turismo. It comes with a BRABUS SV12 R biturbo engine which churns out a healthy 588 kW and a peak torque figure of 1,420 Nm. Suffice to say, 0 to 100 km/h comes in at under 4 seconds - 3.7 to be exact. The 200 km/h mark is reached in only 9.9 seconds and 300 km/h in 23.9 seconds. The car is electronically limited to a top speed of 350 km/h.

BRABUS is definitely deserving of the automaker credential since it adds so much of its own technology to this E-Class Coupe. It takes the standard 5.5 liter V12 and expands it up to a 6.3 liter engine by means of a new crankshaft, larger cylinder bore and bigger pistons. BRABUS also adds a sizable contribution of its own electronic work to the engine.

The BRABUS E V12 Coupe comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission, reinforced by BRABUS, and a high-performance limited slip differential for the rear-wheel drive system. Also added are a new air intake system and a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts.

To help manage the extra wind from the excessive amount of power is a carbon fiber body kit that helps reduce lift on the front end with a sport fender with integrated air vents and other cooling air inlet and outlets as well as other aerodynamic paneling. Integrated LED daytime running lights are also part of the package. A coil-over suspension with adjustable ride height boosts agility. High-performance brakes and 19-inch rims also match the demands of the E V12 Coupe's power rating.

All-New 2011 Nissan Micra Global Car Revealed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1326

Called the "March" in the Japanese market, the car now features body-coloured mouldings, larger front bumper with one-piece radiator grille, and a flatter rear.

Of importance to Nissan was not just the recreation of a useful urban car, but also to give the car an appealing look for a wide customer base. Nissan plans to sell the car in 160 different markets worldwide. "The car has to charm a global audience," said Nissan designer Makoto Yamane. "Its face had to look stylish and have an air of sophistication to it."

The same general shape was carried over from the last version of the car, a facelifted edition of the third generation Micra introduced in 2007. Nissan chose to make more subtle changes, by making the car "slightly longer and marginally lower" which now makes room for an extended wheelbase. Even still, the car maintains a very tight turning radius of 4.5-meters.

Engine choices will vary by market, with only two being offered in Europe. These include the brand new 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 59 kW and up to 108Nm of torque. Running on petrol, the engine gives off 115 grams of CO2 per kilometer. A supercharged, direct-injection 1.2-liter engine will also be sold. This unit includes start/stop, reducing emissions to 95g/km, while improving performance to 72 kW up to 142 Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and a new CVT.

Customers in some markets will be able to get the car with the Nissan Connect touch-screen infotainment unit, sat-nav, glass roof, and the Intelligent Key. Also on offer will be reverse sensors, and a parking assist system with three settings to help amateur, normal, and expert drivers squeeze into tight parking spots.

Fourth-generation Nissan Micra sales will begin this month in Thailand. The car hits European dealerships in November.

Dumb robber leaves own car

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1311

Police here are tracking what might just be the most dim-witted criminal in South Africa.

The suspected thief got such a fright on Friday afternoon when he realised people were watching as he and his mates were breaking into a house in broad daylight, that he left his car - with the keys still in the ignition - in front of the house and fled on foot.

The police say the Ford Fiesta belongs to the man who ran away... and they expect to have him in custody soon.

Two of his mates were arrested after the burglary which took place at about 13:00.

Residents of Windermere Street in Humewood saw three men knocking on the front doors of several houses. At one of the houses, the one man opened his white Ford Fiesta's doors and started putting the seats down.

"As if he was planning to load something into the car," said Precious Timla, police spokesperson.

"Something must have scared them, because the next minute, all three ran away and the police were called.

"I think they must have realised people were watching them."

According to Timla, goods valued at about R50 000 were found at the front door of the one house, ready to be loaded.

"Witnesses described two of the men and they were subsequently arrested by the Humewood crime prevention unit."

And now the police are just waiting for the Fiesta owner to come and claim his handcuffs.

Malema's licence 'expired'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1312

As Julius Malema's lifestyle and assets are still being carefully scrutinised, it appears there's one asset he is lacking – a valid drivers’ licence.

According to The Mercury, Malema's drivers licence expired in September 2009 and it has not been renewed. It has also been uncovered that Malema has 12 outstanding traffic fines amounting to R4 450.

The offences were reportedly committed in Johannesburg over the last two years. The fines range from between R100 and R1 100, eleven of them speeding fines and the other for jumping a red robot.

According to a traffic department official, nine of Malema's fines have since "stagnated" after several failed attempts by traffic officials to serve summons for the outstanding fines.

All of the fines have been linked to the Mecerdes-Benz C63 AMG, which Malema recently confirmed as the only vehicle he owns.

Mercedes AMG New Twin-Turbo 5.5 Litre V8 Engine

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1313

Mercedes-Benz has released details regarding its new lightweight 5.5-litre twin turbo V8 engine. The engine was speculated upon late last year and now is confirmed as reality. It will be used in certain AMG models, the first being the S 63 AMG from this summer.

The new 5.5-litre, codenamed the M157, replaces the current 6.3-litre (6208cc) naturally aspirated V8 which has been doing duty in cars like the C 63 AMG, the CLS 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG, the S 63 AMG and the CL 63 AMG.

Power is rated at 400kW at 5,500rpm and peak torque is a massive 800Nm made between 2,000rpm and 4,500rpm. An even more powerful version with the AMG Performance Package of the 204kg engine will produce 420kW and 900Nm of torque. Both will be mated to Merc's 7-speed MCT transmission which helps the less powerful model achieve 26.9mpg (UK) in average fuel consumption.

According to Autocar, a smaller 4.6-litre version of the engine, also sporting two turbos, will be used for the new CLS and S-Class derivatives later this year.

Lamborghini Gallardo 570-4 Superleggera

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1314

Details and pictures of the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera have been released. The "superlight" Gallardo has made extensive use of carbon fibre to shed even more weight than the LP 560-4 on which it is based. Seventy kilograms has been slashed from the normal car, making the LP 570-4 Superleggera Lamborghini's lightest road-going car.

Power is sourced from a 5.2-litre V10 with an aluminium crankcase and dry sump lubrication. It makes 419kW at 8,000rpm, giving the car an 80.5 kW per litre specific power output. Maximum torque is 540 Nm at 6,500rpm. Lamborghini is fitting the 6-speed e-gear as standard but can offer customers a no-cost manual as an option. The sprint times are 0 - 100km/h in 3.4 seconds and 0 - 200km/h in 10.2 seconds. Top velocity is 325km/h. In addition, fuel consumption and C02 emissions have been cut by 20.5% when compared to the previous car.

The bodyshell is made from aluminium while parts like the exterior mirror casings, the sills, rear spoiler and diffuser are carbon fibre. The windscreen and side windows are constructed out of polycarbonate. Lambo remodelled the front bumper for increased air flow and downforce. As indicated by the number 4 in its name, the LP 570-4 Superleggera has permanent AWD and a 45% limited slip differential on the rear. Grip is provided by 235/35 ZR19 Pirelli P Zero tyres at the front and 295/30 ZR19s at the rear.

Carbon fibre is also used extensively in the interior, with items such as the centre tunnel cover, the door panels and the gearlever surround all being made from the material. Alcantara is also pasted around the cabin and on the sports seats.

Customers won't just enjoy the extreme performance but some luxury gadgets as well, including air conditioning, a rear view camera, electric powered windows and a satellite navigation system.

Carlsson Super GT C25 Released in Detail

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1315

Created to blend "maximum driving performance with an entirely new design and high exclusiveness," the C25 features aggressive styling and a luxurious interior.

Power comes from a 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 with 554 kW and 1,150 Nm of torque. Backed up by a five-speed transmission, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and tops out at 352 km/h.

To make the most of this power, Carlsson installed a C-Tronic suspension with an intelligent lowering system. It "automatically recognizes the road characteristics and driving manners and constantly adjusts the suspension setting accordingly. This does not only result in a pleasant journey on long routes, but also guarantees that the nodding and rolling motions of the C25 are reduced to a minimum while driving fast curves. Therefore, the car reaches the perfect road holding characteristics in every situation and renders the feeling of absolute controllability."

Only 25 units will be made (one for every country where Carlssons are sold). Options include a FOCAL sound system, a 24-karat gold exterior, a matching Smart ForTwo and 'Clubsport' interior with race seats, roll cage, carbon interior, fire extinguisher, and six-point seat belts.

TechArt Lightly Revises GTStreet R Package

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1316

Engineers working at German firm TechArt have released an updated tuner package for the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo facelift. The GTStreet R kit is not extraordinarily different from the 2008/9 package on the outside, with changes likely having to do with how the pieces fit on the facelifted model.

One of the main differences on the new show car is the carbon fiber-look of several parts. While the last model had a dull grey finish on the mirror caps, front and rear spoilers, these parts now have a glossy black honeycomb appearance. Also different are the LED daytime lights at the front, which now extend further while showing a different pattern. The TechArt Formula five-spoke light alloys are different, and are available in 19- and 20-inch versions.

Power figures stays constant, with the TA 097/T3.1 performance kit providing 485 kW and up to 860Nm of torque. Despite the same figures, the 0-100 km/h sprint time went up 0.1 seconds to 3.5s. This could be because of the six-speed gearbox with sport clutch used instead of the previous use of a Tiptronic S transmission.

The Porsche 911 Turbo facelift with the TechArt GTStreet R package will be shown for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show tomorrow.

SA vehicle sales to improve

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1320

South African vehicle sales are projected to improve in 2010, according to a NAAMSA quarterly review.

"Expected improved economic activity levels, the benefit of lower interest rates on the back of declining inflationary pressures and an improvement in the financial position of consumers should contribute to a modest improvement in new vehicle sales."

South Africa's government sees vehicle manufacturing as a key industry to help boost growth and jobs and has tried to help the carmakers to build up exports.

Africa's biggest economy shed nearly 900 000 jobs during last year's recession, more than 200 000 of them in the manufacturing sector.

The NAAMSA data showed exports fell nearly 40% last year compared with the record 284 211 vehicles shipped in 2008.

The total number of locally produced vehicles tumbled to 373 923 units last year from 562 965 the year before, but should pick up again in 2010 to about 434 000, it said.

GM issues 1.3 million vehicle recall

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1321

General Motors is recalling 1.3 million compact cars in North America to address a power steering problem that has been linked to 14 crashes and one injury, the company said on Tuesday.

The recall covers the 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 in the United States; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.

GM said it told US safety regulators about the voluntary recall on Monday after concluding an investigation that began in 2009.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on Jan. 27 into approximately 905 000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1 100 complaints of loss of power steering assist.

"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," GM Vice President of Quality Jamie Hresko said in the statement.

Hresko said that while greater steering effort under 24km/h may be required, the vehicle can still be "safely controlled because the customer can still steer the vehicle."

GM said it is currently developing a remedy to fix the problem and will notify customers when the plan is finalized.

Japanese rival Toyota is facing a slide in US sales after recalling more than 8 million vehicles worldwide due to problems with uncontrolled acceleration and braking glitches that have shone a spotlight on vehicle safety.
