BRABUS B63 S Tuning for Mercedes E 63 AMG
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1050
BRABUS will exhibit the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG-based BRABUS B63 S at the 2009 Essen Motor Show. The famous tuner kept the 6.3-litre (6208cc) V8 natural, meaning no superchargers or turbos are installed. Using its so-called BRABUS B63 S kit power and torque were improved from the standard 386kW and 630Nm to 408kW and 650Nm respectively. The magic was achieved through two sport air filters, free-flow metal catalysts and newly programmed engine electronics.
As a result the 0 - 100km/h sprint is reduced to 4.3 seconds and top speed goes up to 320km/h. A limited slip differential (LSD) with a locking rate of 40 percent ensures optimal grip at all times.
The aerodynamic package was developed in a wind tunnel and includes a carbon fibre front spoiler lip, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler. The front fenders have lateral air outlets which don't just glamourise the car's looks but serve to improve venting. Custom-tailored wheel and tyre combinations include 18, 19 and 20-inch sizes shod with Pirelli or Yokohama high-performance tyres sized 245/30 ZR 20 up front and up to 295/25 ZR 20 at the rear.
Interior equipment choices include durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara, carbon fibre inlays, wood and many electronic gadgets to suit different desires.

Superchips Golf GTi MkVI ECU Remap Adds 33kW
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1051
British tuner Superchips has a Golf GTI tuning package to rival the Golf R.
The ECU tuning being done here seems to be about more than just amping up the horsepower ratings. Superchips wants to create a more responsive engine that can make the Golf GTI improve its performance capability to a finer, measurable degree.
Peak power is boosted by 19 kW and 64 Nm of torque. But the power across the rev band is doled out to optimize flexibility, with Superchips' Bluefin ECU system adding 33 kW at 4737 rpm and 72 Nm of torque at 4450 rpm.
The Buckingham-based tuner claims that a Superchips Golf GTI weighing in at 1271 kg with a power output of 174 kW and 343 Nm comes close to matching the performance of the 1475 kg Golf R with 199 kW and 350 Nm. Tough to argue with that.
The work can be done either by technicians on site or self-installed by the customer using a Bluefin handset plugged right into the ECU in the engine bay. Superchips says the process is easily done and takes only minutes.

Porsche Cayman X-Wide by XTR Carchip
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1052
German tuner XTR Carchip Tuning has unveiled this 2006 Porsche Cayman "987" S with a wide body kit and a couple of engine modifications. The body has a front spoiler with carbon splitter, side skirts, carbon fibre mirrors, rear side panels and detachable GRP fenders. The Pirelli tyres are wrapped around 3-piece 18-inch BBS RS wheels with central locking. The suspension was upgraded and a new Super Sprint "Magnum" exhaust system.
The interior features a new carbon fibre dashboard, 6-point seatbelts for the Recaro GT3 seats, a safety roll cage, air conditioning and the original factory audio system.
Power increased from 217kW to 228kW though some slight engine chip tuning. While this is quite a modest gain, XTR has given assurances that come spring 2010 a prescription that includes twin turbos will lead to a push of about 625kW.
Despite its looks, the Cayman is intended for the street with some hobby track racing on the side.

Mercedes' AMG Division Considering Diesel?
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1053
Mercedes-Benz's AMG division is considering a number of fuel sources that include diesel for its future cars. According to a Whatcar report, Oliver Wiech, AMG's product manager for the C-Class, E-Class, SLK and SL did not exclude the possible use of diesel power for upcoming models.
"We are taking an open view and looking at lots of options," Wiech said, "but if you look at our announcement on the electric SLS, you can see what is in the future."
That means electricity is a definite while others such as hydrogen, solar energy and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are possibly only secondary considerations.
A 2008 report published in WCF speculated that a new C-Class AMG super diesel worth about 368kW and 900Nm would be built by the year 2011.

BMW 7 Series M Sport Receives EAS Matt Black Trim
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1054
Californian tuner European Auto Source has unveiled its own spruced up version of the Frankfurt-debuted M Sport package for the 7-Series. EAS build upon what is already a solid sports kit: Aerodynamics Package, chrome trim on both front and rear aprons and a 19-inch double-spoke alloy design with front and rear wheels wearing differing, optimised tyre sizes. EAS haven't just taken that further, they've also swapped chrome highlights for a fiercer, matt black trim.
Aside from ditching the chrome in favour of matt black side and kidney grilles, matt black OEM rear diffuser, Style 312 OEM 21-inch matt black alloys and a new, converted front bumper replacing chrome with, yes, matt black, EAS also add body-coloured door handles and trunk trim.
All in all, a great improvement. But assumedly at a cost which - although unannounced - is likely to total a few thousand dollars.

Max Auto Updates - 27/11/2009
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1047
ENCO Exclusive has unveiled a new styling and performance package for the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4.
The German-based tuner offers a variety of carbon fiber exterior components such as a front bumper, a boot cover, a front splitter, and aggressive side skirts. Other goodies include a carbon fiber laminate for the rear diffuser, mirrors and boot lid vents as well as a matt black foil wrap.
Inside, ENCO offers faux carbon fiber trim for the steering wheel, central console, dashboard, handbrake, and door handles.
If you find all this a tad vulgar, you might want to check out ENCO's performance package for the 5.2-liter V10. While details are limited, it enables the engine to produce 456kW and 575Nm of torque (instead of 412kW and 540Nm of torque).

The Future of Saab: Possible Scenarios
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1048
With Koenigsegg backing out of plans to buy Saab, many of us are left wondering what will happen to the beleaguered Swedish brand.
According to a recent report, there are only a few likely scenarios and none of them are terribly appealing.
The big one, closure, seems probable considering that Saturn was also axed when the Penske deal fell through. This scenario has been given added credibility since several sources are reporting that there are currently no other bidders for Saab.
The second possible scenario is Saab could be bought by different third-party company. As you may recall, we reported on number of possible suitors for the Swedish brand including several investors and automakers (Fiat, Geely, Dongfeng Motor Group and BAIC). Regardless, it remains unclear if anyone is willing to buy Saab and then fork over the massive investment that is required to bring the brand back to profitability (something not seen in decades).
The next scenario is government ownership, something which seems highly unlikely considering the Swedish government has repeatedly stated they would not take a stake in Saab or Volvo. Despite this, the government has promised to provide at least 20 billion crowns (roughly 3 billion USD / 1.9 billion euros) in loan guarantees to help support the country's automotive industry.
While GM could decide to "pull an Opel" and keep Saab, it remains unlikely because the brand isn't as vital as Opel when it comes to product development. However, Saab is (or was) primed to launch the redesigned 9-5 and new 9-4X shortly. These vehicles could return the brand to profitability, but it remains unclear if GM is willing to take that risk.
Saab's future will likely be discussed at GM's board meeting next week, but until then, what do you think GM should/will do with Saab?

Max Auto Updates - 26/11/2009
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1041
Visitors to South Africa's premier holiday destination who are worried about becoming victims of the country's high crime rate could find themselves instead robbed by a more furry kind of felon: baboons.
The cheeky primates have learned how to open car doors and jump through windows in pursuit of tasty sandwiches and snacks.
City officials are battling to control the increasingly aggressive troupes and there are fears the problem will only worsen with the influx of visitors to Cape Town during the World Cup next year.
On Tuesday, a troupe of 29 baboons raided four cars outside Simon's Town, a small coastal neighborhood. A baboon dubbed "Fred," the leader of the group, opened unlocked doors and jumped through windows to search for food.
He ransacked a bag in the back seat of a red car as a couple panicked about their passports. A girl screamed nearby as a baboon hopped into her car through a back window. Others climbed on car roofs and hoods, looking for ways inside.
Many of those who stopped to watch the raid had their own cars broken into by other baboons.
"We spend the whole day basically rescuing tourists," said Mark Duffels, a volunteer who monitors the baboons in an effort to keep them at bay.
There are about 420 baboons in 17 troupes that roam the city's outskirts, especially the popular scenic sites along the coast. Baboons are a protected species under South African legislation but their persistent pursuit of food has led to conflict with residents.
The baboons associate humans and cars with food although people are strongly discouraged from feeding the animals.
But Justin O' Riain, head of the baboon research unit at the University of Cape Town, fears that the influx of visitors next year will only feed the primates' taste for human foods even more.
"Tourism is going to go through the roof, and this equals exposure to naive people and rich pickings," he said. "People who stop the car, they're going to get raided."
Concerned Simon's Town residents asked Monday for a crossing gate to be put up on the road that leads to the nearby Cape of Good Hope nature reserve.
Cars would be stopped before they enter baboon territory and given a brochure in their native language explaining why they should stay in their cars, lock their doors and close their windows if they see baboons.
"We're so anxious about tourists who can't read or understand English. It puts them at risk," said Liz Hardman, who is leading the campaign. "The perception is that the baboons are harmless and they're not. They're wild animals."

Renault Twingo Gordini Renaultsport Revealed
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1042
Renault has announced the new Twingo Gordini Renaultsport which will debut at the Atelier Renault on the Champs-Elysées, in Paris on January 10, 2010. As previously announced, the little Twingo marks the revival of the successful Gordini/ Renault partnership.
Gordini touches have been restricted to styling which is characterised by the combination of French blue and white racing stripes on the exterior. A choice of two paint colours, Malta Blue or Pearlescent Black metallic will be made available. The tyres are encased in 17-inch alloy wheels with a polished face and a black inner rim. Buyers can specify a 'Cup' chassis with a lower ride height, stiffer springs and dampers as well as the same 17-inch alloy wheels but with Malta blue inner rims instead.
The 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine was not tweaked and remains at 98kW. But the exhaust note is especially tuned to give a throaty note under acceleration. The steering wheel offers good feedback and is precise according to the Renault statement.
Other Gordini features include blue and black Gordini-embossed leather seats, blue leather door panel inserts, blue gearlever gaiter and Gordini-badged gearlever knob and a blue rev counter with white surround. Additional equipment from the Renault shelf includes automatic climate control, cruise control, a radio/ CD/ MP3 player and a fully disconnectable ESP system.
UK sales will commence in March 2010, not long after prices are announced.

Britain's Bloodhound Project Seeks 1000 MPH Record
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1044
The BLOODHOUND Project is gaining momentum following several breakthroughs by the project's team. The project aims to break the land speed record by achieving velocities of over 1,000mph (1,609km/h) while simultaneously getting school children interested in mathematics and science. Already there are 2,410 schools that have signed up for the BLOODHOUND Education programme in the UK.
Progress has also been made on the actual car, the SSC. A final design has been approved after ten design evolutions. The initial 200kg power rocket was deemed insufficient and a new hybrid rocket weighing 400kg has now been fitted. Wheels were designed by Lockheed Martin UK to withstand forces of 50,000 radial g at the rim and support a 6.5 tonne car travelling at 1,050mph (1,690km/h). As for thrust, a total of about 212kN (47,500 lb) is produced from both the rocket and the installed EJ200 jet engine taken from the Eurofighter Typhoon. That is about the same as what 180 Formula One cars make.
The extra power and aerodynamic challenges posed by the new plant called for redesigns which are now believed to be sufficient to keep the whole car on land without destabilising it. The interior was designed to resemble a fighter jet cockpit to which the SSC is compared on the graphical presentation in the video.
The record attempt needed a straight, flat surface covering at least 10 miles (16km). After much research and study, the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa's Northern Cape province was chosen as the ideal location. It has a 12 mile (19km) long flat track with a surface that, although currently covered with some debris, will be cleaned up in time for the final 2011 record attempt.

Hooting motorist foils hijacking
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1045
A Heidelberg woman says she was pulled over by two "policemen" in Murray Street in Southgate on Monday, and told: "You're cheeky and it's going to cost you your life."
Madelene Diedericks, 37, says she was threatened by a man in a police uniform as she was on her way to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital to visit her sister, when her nightmare began.
"These days I drive to the hospital from Heidelberg every day to visit my sister, Meisie Joubert, 47. She was involved in a car accident on October 30 and has been fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit at that hospital ever since," she said.
"On the Vereeniging highway, two men dressed like Saps members drove behind me in an unmarked black VW Golf with blue lights in the front window."
Pulled over
According to Diedericks, two other "policemen" in a white Ford Focus, also with blue lights, pulled her over near the Southgate shopping mall, supposedly because they were looking for drugs and stolen vehicles.
The men in the Golf drove past and later turned around, but didn't stop.
One of the men who'd been driving in the Ford ordered Diedericks to get out of her brand new Nissan 4x4 bakkie, after they presented cards to identify themselves as police officials.
"I refused, because they were being aggressive and I didn't feel at ease, despite the fact that they showed me police identity cards."
According to Diedericks, one of the men pulled her out of her car and became angry because she apparently remained standing too close to the car door.
"Then he wanted me to switch on my car, supposedly to see if it was a stolen vehicle. (He) pressed a firearm to my head when I again refused."
Hit with firearm
It was then that he apparently told her she's far too cheeky and that she will pay for it with her life.
"Meanwhile, another motorist had stopped behind us, hooted and motioned with his thumb in the air, as if to ask if everything is okay."
Diedericks said it was then that the "policeman" hit her over the head with his firearm, nonchalantly climbed into the “police” vehicle and drove off.
According to Thivhulawi Tshilate, Heidelberg police spokesperson, the Mondeor police are investigating a case of attempted hijacking.

Latest safety ratings out
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1046
Euro NCAP has announced safety ratings for 12 cars, including three that will shortly be making their way to South Africa.
Ten of the vehicles achieved the maximum five points in the overall rating using the new scoring method.
The latest results dished up quite a few surprises.
Chevrolet was the biggest with its Cruze sedan scoring five points and the all-new Spark (due in South Africa in the second half of 2010) scoring four in the overall ratings. The Spark missed out on the maximum five stars since it was not fitted with electronic stability control as standard.
These results are especially notable following the Aveo's woeful appearance in 2006 when the car received a one star strikethrough result in testing.
Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s secretary general says: "We congratulate Chevrolet. The company has bounced back with two cars that have a commendable level of safety performance.
"The result from Toyota is disappointing, but in 2010, we predict further results like these as Euro NCAP’s next stage of the rating scheme kicks in and requirements become even tougher."
Toyota's Urban Cruiser received an overall rating of three stars.
In other testing, the BMW X1, Citroën DS3, Mazda3, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Opel Astra and Volkswagen Scirocco all scored five star results.

Max Auto Updates - 25/11/2009
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1036
The 2010 nominees for South Africa's car of the year have been announced by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists, and the absence of BMW, Lexus and Mercedes is telling.
As it stands the nominees are:
• Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4i Turbo Petrol
• Audi Q5 2.0 T S tronic
• Chevrolet Cruze 1.8 LS
• Hyundai i20 1.6 GLS
• Suzuki Alto 1.0 Litre GLS
• Toyota Prius 1.8 ECVT Advanced
• Volkswagen Golf VI 1.4 TSI 90 kW Comfortline
• Volvo XC60 3.0T Geartronic
The next step in the process is to determine the winner from a two-day test session to be held in February 2010 at the Gerotek test facility near Pretoria, where the cars will be assessed independently by the jury members.
This evaluation includes high speed dynamic assessment; an autokhana test to mark maneuverability, parking prowess and general ease of control; driving tests under various conditions on track and road, in town and on gravel, all the while taking fuel economy into account.
A static evaluation of each finalist also contributes to the car’s score in terms of aesthetics, build quality and ergonomics, while considerations based on perceptions of value for money, cost of a spares’ basket, safety features and environmental friendliness contribute to overall points.
While all of the models are deemed to represent examples of outstanding automotive engineering, there can be only one winner and, in the eyes of the COTY jury, that model will epitomise all-round automotive excellence.
Of the nominees, the three favorites are probably Prius (for its innovation), Golf VI (for all-round ability) and Alfa’s Mito (adding some flair to proceedings).

Koenigsegg Pull Out of Deal to Buy Saab
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1037
The future of automotive brand Saab looks bleak. The consortium headed by super car company Koenigsegg have withdrawn their offer to buy the Swedish brand.
The decision comes somewhat as a surprise, with discussions thought to have entered its latter stages. A preliminary agreement was agreed in June, but constant delays to the acquisition process led Christian Koenigsegg to pull the plug.
"We regret that after six months of intense and goal-oriented work we have come to the painful and difficult conclusion that we are not going to be able to carry out the acquisition of Saab Automobile," the head of the company, Christian von Koenigsegg, said.
"The time factor has from the beginning been critical for our strategy to breathe new life into the company. Unfortunately, delays in completing the deal have led to risks and uncertainties that prevent us from successfully carrying out our business plan for Saab Automobile."
General Motors had previously stated that Saab would be shut down if a buyer could not be found by the end of 2009.

SpeedART Porsche Panamera PS9-650 Revealed
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1038
In preparation for the Essen Motor Show, SpeedART has finally released real photos of their Porsche Panamera Turbo based PS9-650 tuning package. Previously, SpeedART kindly teased us with design sketches and then details.
As the name implies, the PS9-650 features 478 kW and 890 Nm of torque thanks to bigger turbos and intercoolers, sport air filter, a sport exhaust system (with switch valve volume control), sport catalytic converters, and to really tweak those new turbos, a reprogrammed ECU. Acceleration from 0-62 mph comes in 3.5 seconds, continuing onto a top speed in excess of 200 mph. If 478 kW is too spicy for you, SpeedART also offers medium, mild and bland performance packages that allow the engine to produce 441, 405 and 382 kW.
In the styling/aerodynamic department, the PS9 is outfitted with a front chin spoiler, hood vents, a rear diffuser with integrated exhaust pipe holes, a rear hatch spoiler, modified rear bumper (with air outlets), and aggressive side skirts. GM to rescue struggling Opel
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1039
General Motors will present a plan to European governments to save struggling carmaker Opel within days, a rescue set to cost $4.9bn, those involved in talks said on Monday.
GM this month backtracked on plans to sell Opel to a consortium led by carparts firm Magna - a deal that involved government aid - but is now turning again to European states for help to keep Opel in business.
Opel interim Chief Executive Nick Reilly travelled to Brussels on Monday to meet officials including German Deputy Economy Minister Jochen Homann and Kris Peeters, the premier of Flanders, a Belgian region where Opel has a plant.
The meeting was also attended by European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes, whose blessing is needed before any state can give financial aid, as well as the bloc's industry commissioner, Guenter Verheugen.
Coming out of talks, Peeters said General Motors would present a restructuring plan for Opel to European governments by the end of the week and that European officials would discuss possible aid on Dec. 4.
GM's Reilly earlier put a cost of $4.9bn on the rescue, saying: "We have indicated that we will inject some GM funds into into that requirement too.
"That is quite difficult because we are also going through a restructuring of our US operations and other parts of the world," he said.
On Monday, the EU's industry commissioner said that without state aid, the plan could not work.
"General Motors made one point very clear, 100% clear, the restructuring plan could only be achieved when European member states with Opel plants give some financial help," said Verheugen.
"So the plan works only with state aid. The idea that General Motors can finance this on its own was not shared by General Motors, this possibility does unfortunately not exist."
Reilly said GM intended to disclose details of its plan to workers and has set up meetings with works councils later this week.
Opel has struggled with slumping global demand as competition in the overcrowded car market remains cut-throat, the same problems that pushed parent General Motors into bankruptcy.
GM's core businesses have been stripped out and moved into a holding company. It had nearly $43bn in cash in September after emerging from bankruptcy in July thanks to a $50bn package that made the United States a 61% owner.

Road ragers high on petrol fumes?
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1040
Outrageous prices may not be the only thing causing anger at the petrol pumps. A new study, published in the open access journal BMC Physiology, has shown that rats exposed to fumes from leaded and unleaded gasoline become more aggressive.
Amal Kinawy, from Cairo University, Egypt, examined the emotionally incendiary properties of gasoline in three groups of male rats, each exposed to either leaded-gas fumes, unleaded-gas fumes or clean air.
As well as observing the animals' behaviour, she studied any resulting neurological and physiological changes. She said, "Millions of people every day are exposed to gasoline fumes while refuelling their cars.
Exposure can also come from exhaust fumes and, particularly in the developing world, deliberate gasoline sniffing as a means of getting high".
What the research showed
The research demonstrates that rats exposed to either kind of fuel vapour showed increased aggressive behaviour, such as more time spent in belligerent postures and increased numbers of actual attacks, in comparison to the clean air group.
Examination of the animals' brains after the experiment revealed significant differences between all three groups. According to Kinawy, "Rats exposed to unleaded gasoline showed indications of increased damage caused by free radicals and altered levels of neurotransmitters in the brain cortex region, in comparison with the control or leaded gasoline groups.
”Furthermore, inhalation of both fuels induced significant fluctuations in neurotransmitters in the hypothalamus, hippocampus and cerebellum".
Kinawy concludes, "Heightened aggression may be yet another risk for the human population chronically exposed to urban air polluted by automobile smoke".

2010 Lexus GX460 Breaks Cover
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1032
Lexus has revealed details of the new-generation GX 460 luxury SUV, also known as Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado with slightly different styling, for the year 2010. The new 7-seater is powered by a new 32-valve DOHC 4.6-litre V8 engine with aluminium alloy cylinder heads and block, as well as dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i). It is more powerful, more efficient and quieter than the old 4.7-litre it replaces.
Maximum power attained is 221kW and peak torque is 446Nm made at 3,500rpm. Driving all four wheels is a 6-speed automatic transmission. The GX 460 retains the GX 470's 6,500-lb. towing capacity.
Designers did not stray far off their proven styling formula. The car is instantly recognisable and features a three-bar front grille with chrome surround, integrated front fog lamps, low-profile roof rails and running board courtesy lamps.
Lexus insists the vehicle is a proper off-road tamer thanks to several technologies. A strengthened Torsen differential distributes power 40:60 under normal driving circumstances but varies it depending on the need. Others include the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) which can reduce maximum body-roll angle by as much as 50 percent, the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with three driving modes, Rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) and Crawl Control to help the car through treacherous sand, mud or snow. It rides on larger 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 tyres.
The interior is as luxurious as it is versatile. For instance the second row seat can slide up to 4.1 inches and is also foldable. The third row has a power fold-flat system for extra functionality.

2011 BMW 5-Series F10 Sedan Revealed
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1034
The all-new sixth generation BMW 5-Series codenamed F10 has finally been revealed yesterday.
In contrast to the current E60 generation which was characterized as being overly dramatic and baroque, the new F10 returns to a more graceful and conservative design reminiscent of the fourth generation E39, yet still aggressive and sporty. We are sure the F10 will win back a lot of alienated BMW fans from the previous Chris Bangle design era.
The new 5 Series sedan will launch with one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder petrol engines as well as two six-cylinder diesels. Approximately three months later, the range will be rounded off by a direct injection four-cylinder turbodiesel.
Starting with the petrol units at the top of the range, the 550i TwinPower Turbo V8 makes 300 kW, 535i twin turbo straight-six delivers 225 kW, while the two straight-six engines with direct injection develop 190 kW in the BMW 528i and, 150 kW in the BMW 523i, respectively. For the diesels, the 530d produces 180 kW and the 525d with 150 kW. Lastly, the 520d and its four-cylinder makes 135 kW boasting an average fuel consumption figure in the EU5 test cycle at 5.2 litres/100 kilometres, the CO2 emission rating is 137 g/km (provisional figures with automatic transmission). BMW's new eight-speed automatic transmission is available as standard on all models (in Germany).
For the front suspension BMW is doing away with the MacPherson strut system that has been in use since 1965 and adopts a more sophisticated multi-link system already seen on the 7-Series F01. The rear suspension has been upgraded as well but remains the same in principle, also as a multi-link system. When equipped with a Sport Package, Adaptive Drive is added which includes Driving Dynamics Control, Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.
BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featuring as standard Brake Energy Regeneration, a gearshift point indicator, active air flap control, and on-demand operation of ancillary units including a detachable a/c compressor. Body construction features aluminum components such as the doors, hood, front fenders and suspension to reduce weight.
A tour de force of driver's aid and infotainment features are available on the 5-Series. They include a Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning with application of the brakes in conjunction with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, and a new Speed Limit Device. Further features also available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, a High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, Park Distance Control and a back-up camera.
The latest fourth generation of BMW iDrive control appears in two versions: with 7.0-in. dimensions and 800 x 480-pixel resolution in standard form, or with the optional Navigation system, in a 10.2-in., 1280 x 480-pixel version with a wider range of features and functions as in the new BMW 7 Series. Displays are transreflective so that light from the sun actually makes the images on the screen brighter.
The 5-Series will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing along side the new 2009 BMW 7 Series F01. The 5-Series F10 is based on the same architecture as the 7-Series as both vehicles extensively share components.
Dealer and press junket is scheduled for February 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal while European market launch takes place in March 2010.

Lamborghini Gallardo Twin Turbo with 1103kW
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1035
Underground Racing has shown off their twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo 'Race Version'.
Created for a client named Jonah, the twin-turbo Gallardo (dubbed the TTG) produces a stunning 1103kW at the wheels (at 2 bar boost) on VP C16 racing fuel. If that isn't impressive enough, the TTG is probably producing 1400kW at the crank - when you consider drivetrain loss of around 25 percent.
Backed up by a six-speed transmission, Jonah was able to post a sub-ten second time through the quarter mile at a speed exceeding 257km/h. As Underground Racing is quick to point out, it was the first time Jonah drove the car after the modifications and he hasn't been to a drag strip in over a decade.

SA flavour for GPS
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1025
South African motorists can now load some of the country's biggest celebrities in their cars and even place the blame for getting lost on them.
Bloemfontein company GPS Creative has recorded the voices of several celebrities, including singer Kurt Darren, model Minki van der Westhuizen, Nataniël, Oom Kallie Marie (Casper de Vries) and Dowwe Dolla (Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck), enabling motorists to load them onto their GPS units.
This means that, instead of hearing a robotic, computerised voice giving you directions, you'll hear your favourite celebrity's voice doing the navigation via your GPS.
"Hi, I'm Kurt Darren, let's hoist the sails (a reference to his Afrikaans hit, Kaptein, which includes the lyrics "span die seile"), where would you like to go?" says the singer.
When the motorist has reached his/her destination, Darren says: "Lower the sails, you have arrived."
Kenneth Blair, spokesperson for GPS Creative, says the recordings are a blend of jokes and the standard directions which are necessary to reach a destination. The humour lies in each of the celebrities' unique tone and way they speak.
"My name is Nataniël and I'll be joining you in your car today... You should never, ever, leave a child in a car. A car has a mirror. I still wear lipstick... There's traffic ahead. Oh dear, oh dear... I usually have much more fun in a stationary car... Carry on with this road," are some of Nataniël's GPS directions.
'O gatta patatta!'
The voice of Oom Kallie Marie (De Vries) says: "O gatta patatta! Ek het satelliet ontvangs verloor... (Oh golly gosh! I've lost satellite reception...) Pasop vir die boetebessietjies! (Watch out for the meter maids!)"
Van der Westhuizen says: "Let's be patient now... there's typical Johannesburg traffic up ahead..."
Darren told Beeld on Thursday afternoon that he had initially found it strange to hear his own voice saying: "Drive for one kilometre". But now he thinks it sounds cool.
"It's a very good idea. I just tried to add as much of my own personality as possible. I agreed to do it because it's a novelty. I think people will enjoy having something like this," he said.
Blair says at the moment these recordings only work with some of Garmin's GPS systems.
People can visit their website, www.gps-creative.com, for a list of the relevant Garmin models.
According to Blair, for now the voices are also only for sale on the website.

VÄTH Giant with 430kW - Based on Merc ML 63 AMG
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1026
The ML 63 AMG by VÄTH Automobiltechnik is certainly one of the most powerful SUVs ever to be put on the road - with the VÄTH 6.3 liter engine doling out 430 kW and 690 Nm of torque.
But how does VÄTH dare to label this AMG engine its own? Well, the German tuner has substituted its own specially forged pistons, enlarged the counter-sunk channels on the cylinder heads, and added its own large intake and exhaust valves, sports camshaft and valve springs. After all that, the ECU tuning they do seems the least of it.
Performance figures on the VÄTH ML 63 AMG come to 4.5 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint and a top speed of 300 km/h.

VW Approves Porsche Merger
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1027
VW's supervisory board has put its final stamp of approval on the company's merger with Porsche AG - a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche Automobil Holding SE.
Volkswagen AG will purchase a 49.9 percent stake in Porsche AG by the end of this year. It will complete a merger with parent company Porsche Automobil Holding SE by 2011.
The Porsche and Piech families, which still control Porsche, are set to put their signatures to a merger contract today (Friday, November 20, 2009). The VW board is said to also be signing off on a series of contracts, thousands of pages long, detailing a multi-stage process for the merger. VW said in a press release it wants the process to go as smoothly as possible and will propose a resolution to issue new preferred shares at its Extraordinary General Meeting on December 3, 2009. The new shares will allow VW to maintain its "medium term financial flexibility," the company said.
From the press statement, "The creation of an integrated automotive group with ten strong brands follows a compelling industrial logic. It represents a unique opportunity for Volkswagen and is in the best interests of all shareholders. Volkswagen will further expand its position as the leading global multi-brand group with the inclusion of Porsche AG and the automobile trading business of Porsche Holding Salzburg."

Opel Corsa Gets Mid-Cycle Refresh Without Facelift
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1028
Opel is set to release an updated Corsa range in January 2010. Improvements are abundant, including the engines, the chassis and even the steering mechanism. Notably the exterior remains the same: "the Corsa stays faithful to its exciting design, with sporty contours and one of the roomiest and most flattering interiors in its class" says the official statement.
The engines have been re-worked, from the 1.0-litre up to the 1.6-litre turbo. The 3-cylinder 1.0 now produces 48kW and 90Nm of torque. Fuel consumption improves by 13 percent to 5 litres per 100km and C02 emissions stand at 117 g/km. Higher up is the 1.2-litre with new figures of 51kW and 115Nm. It dispatches 124 g/km of C02s and averages 5.3 litres/100km.
The same 1.2 can also kick out 63kW and 115Nm of torque and return 5.1 litres/100 km and 119 g/km. The 1.4-litre makes 64kW and 130Nm of torque. Opel says it will return 5.5 litres/100 km and 129 g/km of CO2 gases. A more generous output of 74kW and 130Nm is possible from the same engine.
Diesel fans can enjoy the 1.7 CDTI with 96kW, 300Nm and 118 g/km of emissions thanks to measures like a new turbo charger with an actuator position sensor and a new lighter intake manifold that reduces weight. A smaller 1.3 CDTI has 70kW and 190Nm while emitting 98g/km of C02 for the 3-door and 99g/km for the 5-door.
These improvements were made possible through a new oil pump that optimises oil pressure and reduces friction, a newly-developed double camshaft phaser, new management of the thermostat which reduces the engine warm-up phase and a shift-indicator that shows drivers when best to change gears for optimal fuel reduction. To suit their needs, customers can choose between transmissions with performance-oriented short- or economy-focused wide ratios.
The 1.6 turbo GSI and OPC remain the same at 110kW and 141kW respectively. The Corsa will feature a better chassis and a more direct steering system. Cornering lights, a heated steering wheel and the integrated bicycle carrier system FlexFix make the Corsa a very well-equipped small car.

9ff Speed9 Based on Porsche 997 Turbo Revealed
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1029
German tuner 9ff is set to present their second independent complete vehicle at the Essen Motor Show next weekend. Based on the potent 997 Turbo, the 9ff Speed9 pays homage to the Porsche 356/ 1500S Speedster of 1955 and features a number of modifications that give it more power and handling prowess.
9ff is a bit shy with the details, but for the body the windshield has been shortened and the rear hump that houses the folding roof has been replaced with a flat hard cover for that speedster "level vehicle silhouette" look.
The bi turbo engine pushes out 478kW and 890Nm at 2,850rpm. Engineers used a sports air filter, upgraded the ECU, installed a 9ff sports exhaust system including a new sports catalytic converter to achieve these results. It is driven by a Tiptronic gearbox with integrated paddles.
Improved handling will come from adjustable stabilisers on the front and rear axles, double springs and four aluminium spring plates. To stop it dead on its tracks is a 9ff brake system consisting of 380mm "compound" brake discs, 6-piston calipers and 9ff brake pads.
The aerodynamic package includes a front apron, side skirts and a rear apron. The interior boasts an alcantara dashboard, special 9ff Speed9 sports seats and a sports steering wheel. Most of the other bits and pieces can be customised to the buyer's wishes.
Hopefully 9ff will also release performance figures when unveiling the car.

New carmaker aid to boost growth

South Africa's existing automobile industry programme and its replacement scheme is expected to cut the trade deficit and contribute billions of dollars to gross domestic product by 2020, a government minister said on Friday.
South Africa's automobile sector, a major employer, has been hard hit by a global economic downturn that has seen exports slashed and manufacturing curbed in Africa's biggest economy.
Automotive Production and Development Programme
Currently, the government lends support to the industry under the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which will be replaced from 2013 onwards by the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP), as the country tries to ramp up motor vehicle production and investment.
"Gross domestic product will be 103.3 billion rand higher by 2020 than if there is no support programme," Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.
He said investment in the sector would be 152 billion rand higher by 2020 and employment 320 000 more than if there was no support programme.
"The trade deficit will be 833 million smaller in 2020 than if there is no support programme," he said of the net economic benefits over the next 11 years.
Moderate tariffs
Key elements of the APDP, will see stable, moderate tariffs at 25% applied for light motor vehicles, while duty credits issued to vehicle assemblers will provide encouragement for high level volume production.
Davies said automotive manufacturing firms located in South Africa and who meet the specified criteria to participate in the MIDP and its successor are expected to benefit.
"It is anticipated that all major vehicle manufacturers will draw upon the programme," he said.
Carmakers BMW, Ford, General Motors, Daimler, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen all have manufacturing plants in South Africa.

Audi A1 - The full story revealed
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1021
Audi's plans of premium segment domination necessitate entering segments previously unoccupied at Ingolstadt. Most upper segments have been taken up with cars like the A8, A6 and the R8. The lowest segment is currently ruled by the new MINI.
With the upcoming A1, Audi aims to set things straight and expand its global reach. The A1 will go on sale from late summer 2010 in Europe after its Geneva Motor Show public debut. Reports say its styling will be quite similar to the Metroproject Quattro Concept of Tokyo 2007 with its curved roof and short overhangs. The platform and drivetrain are to be shared with the VW Polo, a decision said to anger some Audi executives but one that's necessary for cost-cutting exercises.
Expected engines include a 1.2 TFSI producing 63kW and 160Nm, a 1.4 TFSI producing 147kW and 122Nm, and a 1.6 TDI worth 77kW and 250Nm. Of course the MINI has performance derivatives which need to be targeted as well. So an S1 will be created with about 132kW being driven by a 7-speed S-Tronic transmission. The S1 would be launched in February 2011.
Following that an A1 Sportback would come to market and thereafter soft-top cabriolet versions in 2012. Depending on A1 market sales, a peppery RS 1 could be introduced. The Q1 SUV derivative is set for production but it's not clear where exactly it would fall. Would it be a rival for the BMW X1 or the smaller MINI Crossman?
Lastly, there is some talk of an A2 range which falls between the A1 and A3 and is entirely focused on clean energies.

Heico Sportiv Tunes Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe Facelift
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1023
HEICO SPORTIV has a new tuning package for the facelift Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe. The tuner believes a strong base is already in place from the stock car which has eco-friendly technologies like stop/start with a brake-energy recovery system and a fuel consumption of 3.9 litres per 100km.
"This is our basic starting point for proving that ecologically friendly action and the pleasure of driving don't need to be mutually exclusive," said HEICO SPORTIV general manager Holger Hedtke. "In doing so, aerodynamically optimised components such as the radiator grille or under-floor intentionally remain untouched."
Power and torque increase from 80kW and 240Nm to 92kW and 280Nm respectively. The 0 - 100km/h sprint time is quoted as 9.2 seconds. HEICO SPORTIV says theirs is 2.1 seconds quicker than the factory car. It also has a 200km/h top speed.
The car's exterior features a HEICO SPORTIV front spoiler, sport rims in 18 and 19-inch size in three colours, and a stainless steel double and quad pipe exhaust system. Other performance enhancers include a differential lock and a sports suspension lowered by 30mm.
Interior accessories include aluminium or leather-covered handbrake, door pin set and gear lever grip.

MTM Boost Audi TT-RS to 316kW
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1018
German tuner MTM has launched a performance package for the new Audi TT RS. Under normal circumstances the car produces 250kW of power and peak torque of 450Nm between 1,600rpm and 5,300rpm. The factory claims a 0 - 100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds.
MTM used the stock 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo as a basis. The engine control unit was adjusted and a new exhaust system with new middle- and end- pipes with throttle valves fitted. Not only does it apparently sound great, but it also revs higher and accesses its torque across a wide range of revolutions.
As a result, three stages of power can be ordered. Stage 1 offers 301kW and 550Nm while stage 2 gives out 304kW and the same amount of torque. The highest stage offers maximum power of 316kW and 560Nm, does 0 - 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and achieves a top end of 297 km/h. The car runs on MTM sport wheels with the original BIMOTO design measuring 19-inch or 20-inch.

GM could slash 10 000 jobs
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1019
US carmaker General Motors could cut between 9 000 and 10 000 jobs as part of its restructuring of its European operations, Nick Reilly, interim head of GM's European business, said on Tuesday.
The company must reduce its production across Europe by between 20% and 25% as part of the 3.3bn euros plan, although final details have yet to be decided, he told a news conference in London.
Reilly said he hoped to announce the full restructuring plan for Europe within three weeks after talks with governments and unions.
The company is prepared to put up some of its own cash to help fund the restructuring, but hopes to receive money from European governments too, he added. The company has about 2bn euros of its own money to invest in the restructuring.
"We have a likely plan but I would rather not give specifics today," he said. "It could involve closing a plant. We haven't 100% decided. We have some flexibility to use some of our own money."
The 3.3bn euros will fund a short-term shake-up and will help meet redundancy payments and investment in the company's product portfolio, he added.
GM hopes to continue manufacturing at its UK plants, Ellesmere Port in northwest England and Luton, north of London, he added. Reilly said there may be a chance to "quite significantly" reduce the 800 British job cuts expected under previous plans.

Audi R8 Twin-Turbo with 394kW Announced by Heffner
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1016
Heffner Performance has released some new information about their latest tuner job. The Heffner Audi R8 Twin-Turbo may look like it "came from the factory," but the details from the car's Dyno Sheet shows a clear upgrade.
According to the engineers, the tuned R8 has a 135kW rear-wheel power gain over the stock model. The 394kW at the rear wheels rating is well over 50% higher than a factory-shipped R8. The tuner firm claims that with 100 octane fuel, this car may be able to realize 441kW at the rear wheels and a sub-11 second quarter-mile.
Although this is an exciting development for Audi fans, we would also like to know the horsepower rating at the flywheel. Engine dyno figures were not released.
The car also gets a new intercooler and factory-look custom intake manifold. Pictures of the Heffner Audi R8 Twin-Turbo are likely to be released as soon as the company paints and polishes the car.
Based in Sarasota, Florida, Heffner Performance has created performance and styling modifications for the Dodge Viper, Ford GT, and several Lamborghinis. The company also designs some custom packages to fit specific customer needs.

Max Auto Updates - 16/11/2009

The plastic number plates of all Gauteng-registered vehicles will have to be replaced with aluminium plates within the next four years.
According to the Gauteng provincial government, the new number plates will cost R50 more than the current plates.
Plastic number plates cost between R50 and R70 each, but the price is not regulated.
The provincial government has been promising for two years to introduce the new plates, but nothing has happened until now.
Present series to run out
Bheki Nkosi, MEC for roads and transport, said on Wednesday in an answer to a question in the legislature that the province is compelled to intervene, as the present registration numbers (series) will run out during the World Cup next year.
He also believes the new number plates will help to reduce crime.
The province wants to hamper forgery, improve the regulation of the manufacturing of number plates, and link each individual number plate to an individual vehicle owner.
According to the new system, new registration numbers will consist of a series of two letters, two numbers and two letters, ending with the letters "GP".
The new number plates will be equipped with a 2D barcode and a passive electronic chip. Vehicle owners will be able to keep their current registration numbers, but will still need to switch to the new aluminium number plates.
According to Nkosi, the manufacturing process will start on February 1 2010 and must be finished before November 1 2013.
The transition to the new system will cost R32m.
New IT system
Musa Manganyi, a deputy director in the department managing the project, said this will be spent on research, the design of the number plates, consultation, the registration of the manufacturers and printers of the number plates, as well as a new information technology system.
Using the new IT system, the government will be able to see where and by whom each number plate has been manufactured, as well as identify the details of the vehicle and its owner.
Gauteng has given a limited number of businesses permission to make the new number plates.
Three businesses will be making the reflective material, six will manufacture the blank number plates, and 204 will print the registration numbers.
Owners of vehicles whose registration numbers start with a "B" or "C" will be the first to have to replace their number plates.
The rest will follow alphabetically.

30km/h speed limits for Pretoria
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1009
There's some bad news ahead for motorists who like putting pedal to the metal.
The City of Tshwane mayoral committee has started a process to introduce 30km/h or 40km/h speed restrictions in certain areas.
The zones are being considered for areas such as schools, tertiary institutions, densely populated residential areas such as Sunnyside, hospitals, taxi ranks, the new Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) stops, and also at sports facilities such as Loftus Versfeld.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Dikeledi Phiri says the project will be launched once the municipality has the necessary funds available.
The project is part of the metro council's plan to ease the traffic flow in the city.
The mayoral committee claims the decision is in line with international trends, and says it wants to make a contribution to halving the number of road deaths in Africa by 2014.
The national road safety strategy of 2006 and the world report on road accidents of 2004, suggest 30km/h speed limits for such areas, the city said.
Trial run
Phiri says Tshwane will start by indentifying two areas where 30km/h limits will be applied on a trial basis. She says an existing project, where this particular limit is already in place in Sibelius Street in Lukasrand, will be used as an initial case study.
The law will be enforced in the same way as in the case of the normal 60km/h limit.
The layout of the road signs is yet to be finalised, but local experts will be used to ensure that the 30km/h signs are clearly visible and easily understandable.
Karen Meyer, DA spokesperson for community safety, said that while the party welcomes the project, one can't help but wonder if it will have any meaningful consequences.
"In an ideal world it would probably work, but in Pretoria, law enforcement is everything but ideal. Motorists are not allowed to speak on cellphones while they're driving, but 90% of them still do so. It this not a similar type of useless legislation?"

Materia Turbo finally here
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1010
Daihatsu’s Materia is one of the most unique-looking cars currently on sale locally.
Although the styling (with its proportionally small glasshouse surfaces) polarises some, to others it possesses a disarmingly loveable mini hotrod vibe.
So it was with great expectation that Daihatsu South Africa showed off its DRD Materia at JIMS in October last year.
Beyond alloy wheels and a substantial sound system, the car on Daihatsu’s display stand boasted a 110kW version of the 1.5l engine. This signaled Daihatsu was close to finally marketing a car in the hot hatch fold again.
Now, six months later than anticipated and more than a year after the Materia DRD was shown at JIMS, Diahatsu's Materia Turbo is finally on sale.
It looks set to shake up the junior hot hatch segment too, boasting more power than either Toyota's Yaris TS or Renault's Twingo RS.
Daihatsu hot hatch heritage?
Although most hot hatch enthusiasts easily gloss over the fact, Daihatsu actually has quite a heritage with regards to producing very quick little hatchbacks.
Locally, the turbocharged YRV automatics were giant-killers between 2004 and 2006.
Sporting a kerb mass of only 890kg and powered by a 95kW 1.3l engine, these little Daihatsu YRVs left a significant void in the company’s local product portfolio when they were discontinued three years ago.
Fortunately the limited edition Daihatsu Materia Turbo will now fill that void.
Hottest hatch in the junior batch?
Although the car now offered on sale is significantly late (it was supposed to go on sale in April) the key hot hatch certified credentials (boosted power and boy-racer looks) are dutifully present.
Although Materia Turbo's forced induction has been geared down from 0.6bar of boost to only 0.4, performance numbers remain quite similar to the JIMS showcar.
To this end the severely undersquare Materia 1.5l engine (running a stroke bias of 91.8mm to a bore of only 72mm) still produces 110kW, at an engine speed 750r/min higher than the JIMS car.
Peak rotational force is five units less than promised in October last year, factoring out to 190Nm at 4 800r/min. Daihatsu claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.9 sec and an electronically limited top speed of 200km/h.
To ensure the performance package is as symmetrical as possible in terms of dynamics, Materia turbo features a 30mm ride height reduction courtesy of Eibach lowering springs at all four wheel corners.
Curiously ABS brakes and a limited-slip front differential are optional extras...
In mitigation, the car does run special performance bias brake fluid graded with a higher boiling point, which should ensure the middle pedal's performance remains true even after severe use on track days.
Plenty of boy-racer styling trinkets
Aesthetically the Materia turbo features a rear roof spoiler, tinted windows and of course there’s an air-intake scoop cut out of the bonnet surfacing to ensure that YRV heritage is continued.
Daihatsu’s hot hatch rolls 17-inch alloy wheels, shod with 205/40 rubber.
Customers have option on either a five-spoke anthracite or rather ridiculous 12-spoke carbon-black with red pinstripe mag design.
The current consignment of Materia Turbos is limited to only 40 units, retailing at R219 900 each.

Porsche SE Posts 4.4 Billion Euro Loss
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1011
Porsche Automobil Holding SE has reported a pre-tax loss of €4.4 billion ($6.6 billion) for its 2008-2009 fiscal year.
Porsche Automobil Holding SE is the parent company of Porsche AG, the luxury automaker. Porsche SE's losses mostly stem from its failed bid to take over Volkswagen AG.
Porsche SE had been buying up VW stock over the last couple of years by borrowing cash in an attempted take-over of its much larger rival. But Porsche SE's gamble for a hostile purchase of Volkswagen AG backfired when it found itself overextended debt-wise as the credit markets hit a crisis in the financial meltdown of late 2008. Porsche SE was then forced to merge with VW this past summer.
In a press release announcing the loss, Porsche SE also reported that its car division, Porsche AG, "remains the world's most profitable automaker," with a profit margin in the double-digits.

World's ultimate low profile tyre
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1013
Wheels and tyres. Not only do they keep you rolling along, they’re a vital factor in the style coefficient of any car.
The general rule of thumb amongst enthusiasts is to wrap the lowest profile rubber attainable on the most generously sized wheel rims available.
However wide of the original engineering specification said tyre/wheel combination goes is of no consequence.
Despite the unintended consequences of appalling ride quality, a voluminous increase in road-noise intrusion and inevitable compromises to geared performance, if it looks good, it looks good - period.
SEMA madness
During the recent SEMA show in Las Vegas the most renowned wheel and tyre manufacturers showcased their latest and greatest wares.
At a show as elaborately themed as SEMA one expects to see some outlandish wheel and rubber combinations, yet nobody could quite prepare attendees for what was showcased at the Nexen stand.
Nexen, a rather low-key South Korean tyre manufacturer (Koreas oldest too), wrapped a tyre of such cartoonish dimensions around a 24-inch alloy wheel, it truly beggared belief.
The tyre in question was the company’s 15-series product. Sound rather inconsequential, until you take in the sequence of numbers running along the sidewall – 365/15R24…
Factor in the 365mm tread width (we can hardly imagine traction being an issue) and 24-inch diameter and that 15 profile number renders as being simply astonishing.
In a world where one winces at the possible ride quality characteristics of 35 profile tyres on 20-inch wheels, the Nexen 365/15R24s must be the most masochistic road tyres, well, ever.
GM to repay $6.7billion government loan
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1014
General Motors (GM) will announce on Monday it plans to start repaying a $6.7bn loan to the US Treasury by year-end due to modest operating improvements, a source knowledgeable about the situation said.
GM, due to unveil its first post-bankruptcy earnings report on Monday, will begin making $1bn quarterly installments on the loan on Dec. 31. At the same time, the carmaker also will start repaying a $1.4bn loan to Canada at a rate of $200m per quarter.
GM was not required to make any payments on the US loan before it matured in July 2015, but better-than-expected vehicle sales will let it start repayments much sooner than expected.
"The reason GM is in a position to do that is that they have seen performance that has been modestly ahead of what the expectation was when GM went into bankruptcy and emerged from bankruptcy," said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the repayment plan.
GM vehicle sales fell off less than expected during its government-supported bankruptcy in June and July, which lasted only about 39 days. Sales since then, aided partly by government "cash for clunkers" incentives, have performed ahead of plan.
Early exit
As a result, GM has not been forced to burn through some $16bn in taxpayer cash provided to the company when it emerged from bankruptcy. The source said GM has used only about $3bn of these funds, which are contained in a restricted escrow account that cannot be accessed without Treasury approval.
GM will make its loan payments from the escrow account, the source said, adding that the arrangement resulted from discussions between the Obama administration's auto task force and the GM board.
"It is consistent with the U.S. government's focus on exiting the position as early as practicable," the source said.
The government stepped in to bail out both GM and Chrysler Group to save a key portion of the US manufacturing sector from collapse amid the recession.
The $6.7bn in senior debt is only a small portion of the more than $50bn in taxpayer funds provided to GM. Much of this was converted to a nearly 61 percent equity stake, making the Treasury GM's largest shareholder. Treasury officials have said they hope to sell shares in a GM initial public offering in the next year.
The source said this would not happen in the first half of the year, so the repayment plan would let GM reduce the loan by at least $3bn "before any plausible IPO."
The repayment schedule also could be altered to accommodate IPO plans or accelerated payments, should conditions warrant.
But the source cautioned that GM's condition was only modestly better than expected and it was not yet ready to repay the full loan amount.
"While there are modest improvements which were important and put them in the position to do this, they are at the very beginning of a difficult restructuring and are not in any way out of the woods," the source said.
