Turning sugar to diesel?

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1183

Researchers have genetically engineered one of the most common bacteria on the planet - E. coli - to digest simple sugars from plant waste and turn it into valuable biofuel.

They said their study, published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, is the first demonstration of a one-step conversion of a renewable nonfood plant to fuel.

The technology could lead to low-cost, low-carbon, high-performance renewable fuels, researcher Stephen del Cardayre said in a telephone interview.

"We looked at the ideal feedstock, which is biomass, and then looked at the product we wanted to make, which is diesel, then we engineered this E.coli to contain the genes that catalyzed all of the chemical reactions required to convert that feedstock into that fuel," del Cardayre said.

"It's a one-step process, so there's no need to have to do two or three buckets of chemistry," he said. "You put in your feedstock, the bug converts it to fuel, which is an oil that you can just scrape off the top."

Del Cardayre of privately held industrial biotechnology firm LS9 worked in collaboration with researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

The work represents the next step forward in biofuel technology developed by the South San Francisco-based company.

Alternative to fossil fuels

Biofuels, made from plants and animal fat, are alternatives to petroleum-based fuels.

Energy Secretary Stephen Chu highlighted the research in remarks to a Capitol Hill forum on clean energy, jobs and security.

"The bacteria we find in our guts, E.coli, they've taken and reprogrammed (with) simple sugars and made diesel," Chu said.

Chu said he was interested enough in the research to e-mail the article's authors and ask how soon the fuel might be available. He said they responded, "We'll know in two years."

Del Cardayre said his company expects to begin commercial production over the next two years in Brazil, where there is an abundant crop of cheap sugar cane juice that could be converted to diesel.

Canada, which has invested heavily in the biofuel industry as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has ordered a study of the environmental impact of making biofuel.

A Canadian Environment Ministry document said there is evidence that biofuel production facilities in the U.S. and Brazil may be responsible for a range of new air and water problems.

GMSA to focus on Isuzu and Chevrolet

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1184

Most of the R900m that General Motors South Africa (GMSA) will spend on expansion over the next three years is related to future products like the new generation Isuzu KB and Corsa Utility, the current generations of which are both assembled in Port Elizabeth.

Edgar Lourençon, president and managing director of General Motors Africa, says this forms part of an approved investment plan in the region and is linked to recent years' expenditure of R4bn on facilities and systems to serve GM dealers better.

Meanwhile, construction of GMSA's new R250m parts distribution centre at Coega is well under way. The centre should be operational by the fourth quarter.

Lourençon, a born and bred Brazilian, began his career at GM in 1977 as an engineer. Before starting in South Africa in November he was, inter alia, GM managing director in Chile, Bolivia and Peru, concurrently with the same role for GM in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

After three months in his new position he notes a positive sentiment among workers following the economic turmoil of the past two years, when GMSA cut its workforce by about half.

The mood among dealers is also very positive. Despite the recession, very few GMSA dealers have closed their doors, he comments.

The Chevrolet brand has performed well in South Africa over the past year and has increased its South African market share from 4.5% to 5.8%.

With regard to new vehicle sales, GMSA does not expect an "explosion" in the market in 2010, but rather a 5%-odd improvement up to 412 000 units compared with last year's 394 000.

The vehicle industry is concerned about Eskom's proposed price hikes because South Africa's electricity tariffs have so far favoured the manufacturing industry. If the increase is approved, the industry will lose one of the few elements helping South Africa in an exceptionally competitive industry.

Lourençon says Africa is a developing region with great growth potential. GMSA is already exporting vehicles to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique and Botswana - especially the Isuzu KB. Competitiveness remains the key to success.

He cautions that Africa still has a way to go before emulating Brazil, especially in light of its infrastructural challenges, political instability in certain African countries and trade agreements that are not always practicable.

B&B Gives VW Golf R 266kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1185

Available in three different configurations, the Golf R can be modified to produce 228, 238 and 266 kW. While details are limited, the range-topping model features a larger turbocharger, a sports exhaust system (with a larger downpipe and a racing catalyst), revised engine electrics, a new air intake, an optimized intercooler, and a Slim-Line oil cooler. Thanks to these tweaks, the 266 kW B&B Golf R can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and top out at more than 280 km/h.

To make the most of the added power, B&B installed an adjustable coilover suspension (with sport springs that reduce the ride height by 30mm) and a high performance braking system.

While the company normally outfits their cars with Caractere body kits, B&B stated the only styling change will be the addition of exclusive 19 and 20-inch wheels.

Volvo Announces New GTDi Engine with Unique Turbo

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1186

Featuring a turbocharger, direct injection, and twin variable camshafts, the engine offers "a unique combination of low fuel consumption, low emissions and high performance across a wide rev range." More importantly, the engine is outfitted with the world's first exhaust manifold and integrated turbine system made of sheet steel. While this sound pretty boring, Volvo says "The sheet (steel) is lighter and more compact and, above all, this system generates less heat owing to its extra insulating layer. This allows high gas flow temperature and thus more efficient combustion. "

Jointly developed with Borg-Warner and Benteler Automotive (a steel component manufacturer), the engine produces 149 kW and 300 Nm (320 Nm with overboost). While Volvo declined to release full performance data, they stated a GTDi-equipped S80 would consume 8.3 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers.

According to Magnus Jonsson, head of Product Development at Volvo Cars, "We've succeeded in making a four-cylinder engine that is as powerful as a 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit, and it's also much more energy-efficient. This is a very welcome both for those customers who want high performance as well as supreme driveability and for the environment that benefits from the improved fuel efficiency. One of the most important reasons behind the results is our new, patented turbo system that has been tailor-made for smaller energy-efficient engines."

The GTDi engine will be initially launched in South-East Asia, the Netherlands, China and Japan. It will be available with a six-speed manual or a six-speed double-clutch automatic transmission.

VW to Introduce R GmbH Performance Group at Geneva

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1187

At the European driving event for the Volkswagen Golf R, company representatives confirmed that they would be setting up a new performance orientated division. Intended to compete with similar divisions at other automakers, an unnamed executive told Inside Line, "BMW has its M, Mercedes has AMG, and our sibling Audi has Quattro. This new R division will be our Quattro."

R GmbH, a limited liability company, will be set up inside the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. In addition to representing the sportiest models in the VW range, it will be an expanded version of the VW Individual programme, which currently offers sporty add-on accessories and styling components under the R-Line brand in Europe. Some of these parts and accessories are currently available in North America through the VW GearStore, but it's only a small portion of the entire catalogue. It is not clear if the R-Line will be available worldwide.

The new company will sell the 266-horsepower Volkswagen Golf R, and the similarly-powered Volkswagen Scirocco R. The rumored Jetta R Sport would probably also be sold through the new company.

The division will be officially confirmed at the Volkswagen presentation during the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Saab Deal Details

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1180

Spyker will give $74 million in cash to General Motors by mid-July in exchange for ownership of Saab. GM will continue to hold $326 million in preferred shares of the Swedish automaker.

GM will also get unspecified "additional consideration" as well, according to GM vice-president John Smith. This is speculated to include $100 million in liquid cash already held by Saab.

The negotiation was completed on the condition that Spyker chairman Vladimir Antonov resign his position and sell off his interest in the Dutch automaker. Antonov, the 35-year-old chair of Russian firm Convers Group, will be bought out by Tenaci Capital, an investment company owned by Spyker CEO Victor Muller.

Part of the deal hinged on Spyker getting support from the Swedish government for a loan from the European Investment Bank. Once the deal between Spyker and GM was completed, the government announced that they would guarantee a €400 million loan from the EIB.

There were so many things at work here," Muller said in an interview with Automotive News. "It was such a complex deal; trying to take a company that was part of General Motors for 20 years and carving that out as a different business."

In 20 years of ownership by General Motors, Saab never once turned a profit.

Saab will continue final development of the new 9-5, with full production of the executive car scheduled to begin in April. As part of the deal, GM will provide the Saab 9-4x crossover, built on the same platform as the Cadillac SRX. GM will also continue to supply Saab with powertrain components into the future, and will coordinate engineering work with Spyker to guarantee a smooth transition.

Spyker and GM jointly announced that Saab vehicles will continue to be covered by their warranties.

Spyker produced less than 50 cars last year, while Saab produced over 93,000. Despite the difference in scale, Muller said, "Our brand values are closely related to that of Saab."

"Both Saab and Spyker are highly individualistic, both have aircraft heritage, and both follow independent Scandinavian and Dutch thinking."

Prior-Design PD3 based on Porsche 911 GT3

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1181

German tuners Prior Design have unveiled their modified version of the 2010 911 GT3. The Porsche 911 PD3 includes a series of aerodynamic upgrades and a custom built exhaust.

The package really revolves around the car's new front end, which extends the car both outward and downward. Love it or hate it, the revision provides more downforce while changing the air flow direction for the better. This now pushes past the carbon fiber spoiler and through the redesigned air inlets. New, deeply sculpted sidesills lead to a completely remodeled rear end. Amongst the changes at back is a new diffuser. As part ot the mods, the car has an adapted chassis that has been dropped by 30 millimeters.

Engineers did not modify the rear wing on the GT3.

Also available is a hand-built stainless steel exhaust, and a new set of wheels. Now, the car rides on ultra-light, sectional forged wheels available in several different sizes.

The Porsche 911 PD3 styling kit is now available through the company's website. Pricing has not been disclosed.

2011 BMW M3 Competition Package

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1182

The 2011 model year BMW M3 is rumoured to carry an M3 GTS Competition Package (codenamed ZCP) as an option. According to sources who spoke to Bimmerfile.com, the package will be available to enthusiast US M3 owners who need a bit more aggression and performance from their cars. The US was unfortunate enough not to be included on the GTS global list.

Apparently included are items like Alcantara interior inserts, 19-inch wheels, a suspension system that is lowered by 10mm and an updated EDC Sport setting. A possible exhaust or transmission upgrade is also speculated.

2010 Mazda6 Facelift First Details Released

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1170

Mazda announced today that sales of the facelifted version of the 2010 Mazda Atenza would begin immediately in Japan. The car will be introduced internationally at the Geneva Motor Show as the 2010 Mazda6.

The mid-size car comes as either a four-door sedan, five-door, or five-door wagon. Its "grinning" front end, including a new front bumper, now brings the Mazda6 inline with the Mazda3 and recently revealed Mazda5. More dramatic changes at the back, where the car now sports a completely remodeled bumper, light clusters, and tailpipes. Changes were not just made to the outside, as the car now has a single color interior instead of the contrasting tones in the 2009 model. It gives the interior of the car a cleaner look.

Engine offerings on the car include a new, more efficient petrol 2.0-liter DISI1 unit replacing the current 2.0 engine. The MZR 1.8- and 2.5-liter petrol engines have also been updated a bit. The MZR-CD 2.2-liter turbo diesel, on offer ranging from 93 to 131 kW, has modifications to make it more efficient and clean. All six of the engines choices will be available in Europe, but the MZR 1.8-liter will not be sold in Japan.

Adaptive lighting, hill assist, and an adjusted chassis round out the changes. The Mazda6 will get its international premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and will go on sale in Europe soon after.

Brabus GL 63 Biturbo Pumps Out 478kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1171

German tuners Brabus released their version of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last month at the Dubai Motor Show. The Brabus GL 63 Biturbo has been fitted with the Mercedes eight cylinder engine from the ML 63 AMG, tuned to deliver 478 kW and up to 850 Nm of torque.

If that number sounds familiar for Brabus, it is because the company used the same engine and tuning package on their ML 63 Biturbo. That SUV debuted in Geneva a year ago with a top speed of 310 km/h.

The GL 63 is a bit slower, with a top speed of 300 km/h, and a 0-100 km/h sprint of 4.7 seconds. The engine is mated to a modified version of the Speedshift 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive. It includes a customized, and more responsive twin turbo system, large water-to-air intercooler, with other upgrades to the intake and exhaust, brakes, suspension, and tires. The vehicle now rides on forged 23-inch wheels. 21- and 22-inch wheels are also offered.

Brabus is also making the SUV available with a Widestar package, including 3-centimeter wide fender flares, rocker panels, a new front apron, and larger air inlets. LED daytime running lights, underfloor lighting, and four extra headlamps have also been installed. Roof spoiler, rear apron, and rear diffuser have all been installed, as well as a quad-pipe exhaust.

Interior upgrades include Mastik leather, Alcantara, and a choice of wood or carbon-fiber trim. A full pallette of color options is offered for each. LCD screens are integrated into the seats for the rear passengers, who have access to a DVD player.

Whitacre Accepts Permanent Position as GM CEO

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1172

Ed Whitacre has been named permanent CEO of General Motors, according to the company. His goals for the company include repaying $5.7 billion in loans from the U.S. and Canadian governments by June, an initial public offering, and the continued divestment of non-core brands.

In a press conference Monday, Whitacre said his decision to accept an offer from the board to turn his interim-CEO role into a continuing career was to help GM become more durable. "This place needs some stability; I guess that's me," Whitacre said at the event.

When Whitacre took over for former CEO Fritz Henderson in December, he became the company's third CEO in less than a year. He remains Chairman of the Board, a job he took on when GM exited bankruptcy in July.

"The last thing GM needs right now is its fourth CEO in less than a year. More than anything, GM needs stability -- stability in leadership, stability in direction -- so that it can sell cars, boost market share, make money, get its financial house in order and go public again," Edmunds.com senior analyst Michelle Krebs told the Detroit Free Press.

Whitacre wants to lead the company through an IPO in short order to boost the company's level of cash. "The next milestone will be our initial public offering where we can be traded as a public company again, allowing the government to divest its equity in an orderly and timely manner," he said. Whitacre noted that paying back government-backed loans is a crucial step to becoming profitable again.

The 68-year-old Texan retired as CEO for AT&T in 2007. He is joined by CFO Chris Liddell, who had held the same role at Microsoft.

Spyker Trading Suspended for Pending Announcement

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1173

Trading in shares of Spyker Cars on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange were suspended today in advance of an announcement regarding the company's attempted purchase of Saab. The price was frozen at €3.91, nearly an 82% increase since trading ended last Friday.

Spyker, backed by Russian bank Convers Group, has been negotiating a deal with General Motors to purchase Saab. The most recent offer is believed to be valued at $550 million in cash and stock. Recent rumors suggest that a Spyker vehicle has also been delivered to the Saab museum in Sweden.

A source close to the deal told the Associated Press that the sale has almost been completed. Spyker has said that trading will be suspended until a statement is released to the media. Should the announcement confirm the sale, expect the Dutch automaker's stock to spike higher, despite Saab's consistent losses.

If the Saab deal collapses, share value could drop back to €1.71. That's where Spyker shares were trading just after talks between Spyker and GM broke off in mid-December.

Ecclestone, Genii, pull out of Saab bidding race

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1174

Bernie Ecclestone and Genii Capital have pulled out of the running to buy the beleaguered Swedish carmaker Saab.

"Genii Capital believes that the timing of the next stage of the shutdown process at Saab is not compatible with its requirements for putting in place a solid business platform for the future and closing the transaction," the Luxembourg based company said in a statement.

It emerged earlier this month that the familiar F1 names were facing off with Spyker, the Dutch specialist sports car maker that competed in F1 in 2007, to buy the currently General Motors-owned Saab.

Genii, headed by Gerard Lopez, recently bought a controlling stake in Renault's formula one team. Ecclestone, the F1 chief executive, was a part of Genii's Saab-bidding consortium.

GM first U.S. automaker to build electric motors

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1175

In an effort to reduce costs, GM has announced plans to become the first major U.S. automaker to design and build electric motors.

Currently, the company buys electric motors from suppliers at a premium price. By producing them in-house, GM should be able to pass the savings onto consumers.

The first GM-made electric motors are scheduled to debut in 2013 on the next-generation two-mode hybrid. While details are limited, the new system "will use two unique motor designs and an internal combustion engine to provide improved fuel efficiency." The motors will be roughly 25 percent smaller than the ones used on the current two-mode hybrid and produce about 20 percent more power.

It remains unclear what vehicle will launch will this technology, but GM stated it would be rear-wheel drive. This seems to indicate that it could be the Cadillac XTS hybrid, the Cadillac Converj, the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra or the next-generation Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon/Cadillac Escalade.

According to Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of Global Product Operations, "We think the electrification of today's automobiles will be just as revolutionary and just as beneficial to our customers. Electric motors will play a huge role in that." He added, "In the future, electric motors might become as important to GM as engines are now. By designing and manufacturing electric motors in-house, we can more efficiently use energy from batteries as they evolve, potentially reducing cost and weight - two significant challenges facing batteries today."

G-Power Typhoon Black Pearl with 460kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1176

Based on the previously seen X5 Typhoon, the Black Pearl features a monotone black paint job and an aggressive body kit with revised fascias, a new hood (with improved ventilation), and wider fender flares. Other styling tweaks for the BMW X5 include a rear diffuser, a roof-mounted spoiler, aerodynamic side skirts, and 23-inch Silverstone aluminum wheels wrapped in high performance Michelin tires.

Under the hood, G-Power outfitted the 4.8-liter V8 engine with a SK III RS supercharger, a carbon fiber air intake, a large-volume aluminum charge air cooling system, a SpeedFlow high-performance exhaust system (with racing headers, racing catalysts and racing end mufflers), forged MAHLE pistons, new fuel injectors (with a larger fuel mass capacity), and revised engine electronics.

Thanks to these modifications, the engine produces 460 kW and 700 Nm of torque. This enables the Black Pearl to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 16 seconds, and top out at more than 300 km/h.

VW Golf-6 R in Detail

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1177

The new Volkswagen Golf R will be released with a 2.0-liter direct-injection TSI petrol engine producing more horsepower than its predecessor. Not only is it more powerful, but the new engine is also more efficient.

As a replacement to the Golf R32 and its 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine, the new Golf R exceeds performance expectations. Its 196 kW engine is 8% stronger than the previous model, and has a 4.5% torque increase to 475 Nm. 0-100 km/h time improves to 5.7 seconds with a manual transmission, down from 6.5 seconds on the R32. With the DSG gearbox the time drops to 5.5 seconds. Top speed is set at an electronically-limited 250 km/h.

Also nice is the fuel rating. With the DSG the car uses 8.5 liters per 100 km, or nearly 28 mpg. That is a nice improvement on the 10.7l/100km from the predecessor. CO2 emissions drop by 22% to 199 g/km. Like the R32, the Golf R is also an all-wheel drive model. However, the new all-wheel differential does not require "a difference between the front and rear axle speeds" anymore.

The VW Golf R also includes a bunch of equipment, like LED daytime running lights, LED rear lighting clusters, and Bi-Xenon headlights. Twin chrome tailpipes can be found under the diffuser. The adaptive chassis now has three settings, including "Normal," "Comfort," and "Sport," with ride-height dropped by 25 millimeters. Ventilated disc brakes and glossy black tuned callipers are covered by the new 18-inch Talladega style alloy wheels. 19-inch wheels in silver and black are also available.

Inside, designers included leather touches along the micro-fiber fabric interior. Sport seats are added, as well as a whole host of R-badging.

For the full list of standard equipment, check out the press release below. Pricing has not yet been announced on the 2011 Volkswagen Golf R. Despite reports of the Golf R approved for the North American market, no official confirmation has been made, yet.

Over 1 500 die in festive crashes

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1178

There were 1 582 road accident deaths over the festive season, a decrease from 1 655 in 2008, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest death toll with 298 and the Northern Cape the lowest with 66, Ndebele said at the release of the statistics in Pretoria.

There had been 1 247 vehicle crashes.

"It's no particular age group who drives badly on the roads, it's individuals."

Ndebele said over last year's Confederations Cup no "major" road accidents had been reported.

"However it is important to contrast that behaviour [of driving] during soccer events to [that of the festive season]. Our behaviour on the road is not expressive of a free democratic society."

Democracy on roads

Drivers tended to believe they were the only ones on the road and ignored fellow motorists and pedestrians.

"We must place more value on human life and exercise respect and democracy on our roads as well."

Over the last three years there had been a "slight decrease" in the number of deaths, but it was so minimal so it could not be attributed to behavioural change.

Ndebele said during the festive season more than 1 500 roadblocks were conducted and more than 1.2 million vehicles and drivers checked.

As a result more than 6 000 vehicles, including 1 536 buses and 1 669 minibus taxis were pulled off the roads.

5 900+ arrested

More than 5 900 arrests were made - including drunk drivers (3 917), reckless or negligent drivers (314), speedsters (415), drivers with overloaded vehicles (250), public transport offenders (246), drivers without driving licences and false documents (251) and other offences (589).

Ndebele said 218 pedestrians were arrested for jaywalking.

More than 447 000 speed camera offences were recorded, with the highest speed clocked was 232km/h in KwaZulu-Natal. The motorcyclist responsible was arrested and fined R18 000.

More than 330 000 fines were issued directly to motorists for various other offences.

"We want to move with speed and put in place measures that have proven to be effective in reducing the impact of road traffic crashes 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year."

Change to traffic laws

He said in terms of the newly-promulgated National Land Transportation Act, all national bus services such as Greyhound and Roadlink would be licensed by the national transport regulator.

"We have legislation in place which provides for cases where provincial or municipal law enforcement is ineffective, national intervention is possible.

"In this regard, I have taken a decision to implement that relevant provision of the law in cases which deem necessary," said Ndebele.

The current traffic law enforcement system was also not effective, the minister said.

"If we want to stop counting bodies every year we have to change it."

He said the system of issuing traffic fines with an option of going to court overstretched already burdened courts.

GM Reaches Agreement to Sell Saab to Spyker

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1179

General Motors and Spyker Cars NV today confirmed that they have reached a binding agreement on the purchase of Saab Automobile AB.

"Today's announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide, and great news for GM," said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.

"General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we're all happy for the positive outcome," Smith said.

As part of the agreement, Spyker intends to form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will carry the Saab brand forward. The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale will be disclosed in due time.

The Swedish government is at present reviewing the transaction and the related request for guarantees of a Saab Automobile loan that has been requested from the European Investment Bank. Assuming quick action, the transaction is expected to close in mid-February, and previously announced wind down activities at Saab will be immediately suspended, pending the close of the transaction.

"Throughout the negotiations, GM has always had the hope to find a solution for Saab that would avoid a wind down of the brand," added Nick Reilly, president, GM Europe. "We've worked with many parties over the past year, including governments and investors, and I'm very pleased that we could come to such a good conclusion, one that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker on their way forward."

Japanese bank on foreign plants

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1162

Major Japanese carmakers ramped up foreign production to record levels in December, they said Monday, as they continued to move factories abroad and global sales showed tentative signs of a recovery.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. said they made more cars at their international factories then ever before during the month, while Honda Motor Co. had record production in China and other parts of Asia.

Toyota said it made 636 102 cars abroad in December, up 33% from the same month a year earlier and its fifth straight month of increases. The company has in recent months been making more cars to keep up with global sales, which have gradually recovered compared to a year ago, when the economic crisis unfolded.

Company spokesman Paul Nolasco said the numbers were a positive sign of a turnaround, but stopped short of saying that a full recovery was under way.

"Turning around and getting there are totally different," he said.

Japanese car companies have been gradually shifting production outside of the country, so that cars are made closer to where they are sold. The spike has also been driven by increasing car sales outside of the country, in part due to government measures to spur buying, such as rebates and tax benefits.

For 2009, Toyota's worldwide production fell 22% from the previous year. Last year, the company made just over half of its vehicles outside of Japan.

Nissan Motor Co. said its production outside of Japan shot up 69% in December to 183 422 vehicles, also a record for the month. This included an 81% increase in U.S. production.

Honda said its foreign output for December was only 3.4% higher globally, but marked the first increase since October of 2008. Production in China shot up over 65%.

Both Nissan and Honda said global production fell for 2009.

Possible Saab Sale to Spyker This Week

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1163

A wide variety of press reports is suggesting that a deal between General Motors and Spyker over the sale of Saab could be nearing completion. If true, the transaction would save the 63-year-old brand from liquidation, while securing some, if not all, of the company's 3,400 employees.

One report in the Financial Times says that the agreement could be announced as soon as today, though other news outlets believe the sale is far from finalized. One Swedish newspaper has published that Spyker CEO Victor Muller has been in Saab's home of Sweden since Friday. If approved by both sides, Bloomberg News believes that Spyker will acquire Saab for $500 million in cash and preferred stock in Saab.

Bloomberg believes the $500 million is made up of $75 million in cash from Spyker, $100 million in cash from Saab's coffers, and $325 million in stock.

Meanwhile, an e-mail to SaabsUnited gives one symbolic indication that an agreement has been reached. "A Spyker car has been delivered to the SAAB museum in Trollhattan!" wrote one fan in a note to the website.

Should talks between Dutch brand Spyker and Saab-parent GM falter, at least one other company is still waiting in the wings. Luxembourg-based investment firm Genii Capital made an all-cash offer to GM earlier in the year. Still, even Genii spokesman Lars Carlstrom believes the Dutch company will come away with Saab.

"We believe that Spyker is well-positioned in this deal, and I would expect an outcome early next week," Carlstrom said.

As of 9:00a.m. GMT, shares in Spyker Cars were up nearly 30% on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

2011 Peugeot 408 Sedan Revealed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1166

The Peugeot 408 is a long-wheelbase sedan based on the 308 giving more room for passengers sitting in the back.

This model is not to be confused with the recently-spied Peugeot 508 for the European market. That car will replace the Peugeot 407 & 607 beginning in 2011, and be significantly longer than the Chinese market's 408.

The 408 features a large sunroof and a self-contained trunk to keep the cabin light and spacious. Because of the interior room, and the somewhat popular Peugeot styling in China, the automaker and their Chinese joint-venture partner are expecting annual 408 sales to top 100,000 units.

Peugeot's sedan was designed in China and Europe with three objectives: "[E]mbody the Marque's modernity, guarantee maximum safety and offer unrivalled interior space," according to a press release.

At 4.68-meters long, the Peugeot 408 will be produced in Wuhan, China.

2011 BMW 335is Coupe and Cabriolet Official Info

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1168

BMW Canada has lifted the lid on the official specs for the 2011 BMW 335is Coupe and Cabriolet. The cars will use a 235 kW all-aluminum 3.0-liter inline-6 generating up to 450 Nm of torque.

The automaker's decision to de-tune the same engine as the Z4is, which produces 246 kW, is questionable at best. InsideLine is reporting that BMW has provided three conflicting reasons why this is the case, with one official saying the six-speed manual could not tolerate more power. A second rep said the decision was made for marketing reasons, and a third said the car uses a more restricted intake. The real answer for the car having less power than the Z4is is unclear at this time.

With a temporary overboost, the twin-turbo engine churns out up to 502 Nm. To keep the more-powerful engine cool, the company installed an extra radiator, and a stonger electric engine fan. To accommodate the extra airflow requirements, engineers modified the front fascia to include larger openings.

As a Coupe the car sprints to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds with the seven-speed double clutch. Add 0.1 seconds when using the six-speed manual. As a convertible, the car reaches 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds with either gearbox.

US specs on the car are expected to be the same, reaching 100km/h in 5.0 seconds with the DCT, and 5.1 seconds without.

Equipment on the car includes xenon headlights ringed in LEDs, LED tail lights, and a glossy exterior trim. The car rides on 18-inch light alloys, which may be upgraded to 19-inch M-badged alloys. A full M aerokit is also included, as is a collection of M Sport interior parts.

Fiat Punto evolves

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1169

In line with the changes introduced to the local Punto line-up late last year, the Punto Evo uses the Grande Punto's architecture, yet adds more goodies to it.

It comes with a host of safety features including knee airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and ESP with hill holder. Fiat's innovative Blue&Me interface governing audio, telephone, trip computer and also GPS is available too.

The car's interior has been reworked with softer lines and softer materials used and the centre console is almost half its previous size. Instruments gain larger dials and a new, bigger, cowl to shade them from the light.

At the rear, there is a new bumper, new rear lights, and the Fiat logo that doubles as a boot release. The new bodywork stretches the Punto Evo by 3cm to 406cm, although other dimensions of width, height and wheelbase remain the same as the Grande Punto.

New engines

Probably the more important feature about this car is that it houses two new engine ranges - the petrol MultiAir and MultiJet II diesel engines.

MultiAir is Fiat's new electronic valve control system that controls air intake on a cylinder by cylinder manner. Valve lift is therefore flexible and varies constantly according to the engine's specific requirements.

This, along with various factors other means, is said to optimise combustion efficiency and have resultant benefits in terms of power, torque, fuel consumption and emissions.

In addition, all engines now come with Start and Stop technology that, rather than idling, shuts down the engine when the car is stationary.

We are unlikely to get the new turbodiesel engine, but South Africa will receive 1.4-litre derivatives of the petrol engine with MultiAir technology. A naturally aspirated 1.2-litre engine will also be included in the local line-up.

SA price for V8 Lexus IS-F

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1158

The heavily anticipated 311-kW Lexus IS-F touches down in South Africa.

Bearing the F nomenclature specific to Lexus performance models, this IS is the result of hours of exhaustive development conducted on Japan's Fuji Speedway.

Based on the IS250 sedan, the IS-F makes substantial changes in its metamorphosis into a proper sports sedan.

It is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine developing 311kW at 6 600 r/min and a peak torque figure of 505Nm of torque at 5 200 r/min. The powerplant is mated to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift (SDS) transmission.

Lexus claims this 'box's ability to shift gears in tenth of a second makes it - bar an F1 version - the fastest gear change in the world. Using these rapid shifts to full effect, IS-F will sprint to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds before hitting a top end of 270 km/h.

IS-Fs destined for South Africa also gain the benefits of kit added in a recent facelift. Most prominent of these, perhaps, would be the addition of a limited slip differential that should see a marked increase in traction and stability through high-speed corners.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer the IS-F in South Africa with a comprehensive performance specification that includes a limited slip diff, something we have been waiting to secure,” said Kevin Flynn, General Manager of Lexus SA.

“Our South African customers have been very patient waiting on the arrival of this car. But their wait has been worthwhile because we can offer them the very best IS-F possible, one that features all the upgrades recently announced for the 2010 model year car," Flynn continued.

South Africans willing to part with R776 900 will enjoy the privilege of housing an IS-F in their garages.

The car is covered by Lexus' four year/100 000km maintenance plan and manufacturer warranty.

Gran, 91, caught speeding

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1160

Daleen Moll has received her first speeding fine - at the age of 91!

She was trapped doing 113km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N12 near Harrismith on December 15.

Moll, a former social worker from Kempton Park, said she'd been driving a little faster than she perhaps should have to get to Port Shepstone for a holiday.

"It was hot and we wanted to get to the sea," Moll said on Sunday.

She said while the long trip wasn't a problem for her, she didn't like driving on her own.

Her granddaughter, Juanita Kotzé, 21, was in the car with her and they'd taken turns driving. The other one had to be on the "lookout".

Moll said she would be paying the fine at the end of the month.

The 91-year-old got two traffic fines on the same day in the 1990s, but she was let off the hook after writing to the traffic department.

Moll said she was very "blessed" that she could still drive at her age.

"I renewed my licence in 2008. I even passed the eye test. But there are no fingerprints - they said I was too old."

Moll said she wouldn't be renewing her licence in 2013.

"I'm scared they'll tell me I'm too old to drive.

"I drive fast, but safely."

Facelifted Auris here soon

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1161

Toyota’s revised Auris range has been released in the UK (where it is assembled) and changes to Toyota’s Golf rival have been subtle. The only perceptible exterior cue to the Auris facelift is its new, family Verso-themed styling.

Among the changes are integrated fog lamps seated in a deeper front bumper arrangement. Auris gains a revised bonnet profile (featuring stronger crease lines) and a new grille, bringing it inline with the latest generation Verso.

All new Auris models see additional indicator illumination integrated into the side mirrors too.

Redesigned 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels round off the styling changes.

Bye-bye orange dials - finally

Cabin architecture remains relatively untouched, with some added functionality – primarily in terms of infotainment where changes have been made to the USB port and aux-in socket adaptability.

Mercifully those horrid orange hued optitron instruments have been toned down to a more palatable white tint. Drivers keen on a performance look can now option Toyota’s new flat-bottomed leather steering wheel…

Mechanically the new Auris has seen revisions to the car’s suspension and power-steering to usher in more secure high-speed stability.

Drivetrain options (for the UK market) include Toyota’s 1.33l Dual VVT-I engine (featuring stop/start functionality) and either 1.6l Valvetronic or 1.4 D-4D compression ignition power, both driving through either manual or MultiMode transmission.

Expect the new Auris (minus most of the UK spec engines) to be available locally during the first quarter.

Suzuki's future is small

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1154

Suzuki Motor Corp. must stick to what it does best - being a small-car maker - even as it forges an alliance with Volkswagen AG that will rank as one of the world's biggest auto empires, its chief executive said Thursday.

Last month, the Japanese automaker signed a deal with Volkswagen for the German automaker to take a 19.9 percent stake in Suzuki for 220 billion yen ($2.5 billion).

The combined annual sales of Suzuki, which makes small cars such as the Swift and the Splash, and Volkswagen, which makes the Beetle and Golf, will total about 8.6 million vehicles, rivaling - or possibly besting -the world's top automaker, Toyota Motor Corp.

But the bushy-browed Osamu Suzuki, 79, chief executive and chairman of Suzuki, has long insisted the secret of his company's success lies in its humble, penny-pinching management vision as a small operation.

Borrowing expertise

His company hopes to benefit from Volkswagen's expertise in green vehicles, such as hybrids, electric vehicles and technology to boost fuel efficiency of gas-engine cars, while Volkswagen hopes to benefit from Suzuki's presence in Asia, developing products together and sharing parts, he said.

Suzuki built its empire by selling small cheap cars, especially in Japan and emerging markets. And it wasn't about to turn into a big player, he said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Tokyo.

"This approach is totally wrong," he said. "If Suzuki employees start to develop an illusion they are No. 1 in the world, that will lead to a terrible mistake."

Major automakers like Toyota and Volkswagen make vehicles costing between 5 million yen ($55 000) and 8 million yen ($87 000), Suzuki noted. Suzuki cars, in contrast, cost between 500,000 yen ($5 500) and 1 million yen ($11 000).

That means Suzuki would have to produce five times the vehicles of a bigger manufacturer to rival their standing, Suzuki said.

"One must not aim too high. One must not be jealous. One must go one's own path," said Suzuki, who is highly regarded in business circles for his managerial acumen.

One of Japan's most colorful executives, Suzuki has written books, including a recent one titled, "I'm Just an Old Man at a Small Company," flaunting his stingy but some say charming approach to management.

Suzuki offices scrimp on airconditioning and have done away with receptionists. Plants have reduced electric lighting, and some Suzuki dealerships look like repair shops.

He took on the Suzuki name after he married the granddaughter of the automaker's founder.

Tie up good for Suzuki

Mamoru Katou, auto analyst with Tokai Tokyo Research, said tying up with Volkswagen was a good match for Suzuki as it needed to rev up its defenses to maintain its lead as rivals catch up in emerging markets, and competition grows in green vehicles.

"It is hard to go at it alone in developing ecological technology, and Suzuki needed an alliance," said Katou. "A possible minus is that Volkswagen may want its way in management, risking Suzuki's individuality."

So far, Suzuki has weathered the global downturn much better than some of its bigger but money-losing rivals. Suzuki is forecasting a 15 billion yen ($164 million) profit for the fiscal year through March 2010.

The automaker controls more than half the market in India, where it ventured ahead of competition and growth opportunities are now huge. It is also strong in Pakistan, China and other Asian markets. Volkswagen is strong in Brazil and China.

Suzuki brushed off worries about a culture clash between German and Japanese management. Besides, Suzuki is not new to global alliances, he said. Last year, Suzuki closed its alliance with General Motors Co., which began in 1981. GM sold a 17% stake in Suzuki in 2006, and its remaining 3% stake last year.

"If we choose not to fight, we can both grow to No. 1 in the world. Then we are happy," he said.

Bidders still optimistic on Saab sale

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1155

Don't ring the death knell for Saab just yet, says one potential suitor for the Swedish brand. Genii Capital, a Luxembourg-based private investment firm, says Saab parent General Motors Co. is still negotiating with at least one bidder.

Dutch niche sports car manufacturer Spyker has held off-and-on talks with GM over a Saab sale since last November, and questions still remain over financing for their proposed buyout. The Spyker discussions followed in the wake of the collapse of a tentative deal GM had with Swedish supercar builder Koenigsegg. Genii Capital, the majority owner of Renault F1, submitted a cash offer for Saab earlier in January. It is not surprising that F1 head Bernie Ecclestone supports Genii's offer.

Liquidators, working on behalf of GM, have already taken control of Saab, but they have apparently not begun selling-off the brand's assets. "As we understand it, the wind-down is on hold until a statement from GM on the sale ... we're still hopeful," Genii bid coordinator Lars Carlstrom said in an interview.

A GM spokesman told Reuters that Saab negotiations would continue no further than mid-February. The company's dealership network is still accepting new vehicle orders, and Saab Automobile's 3,400 employees will continue building cars through the end of January. However, the future beyond that time is unclear.

A test prototype of Saab's 9-5 wagon variant was recently photographed cold-weather testing in Northern Sweden, leading to speculation that product development has not yet ended.

Pagani C9 Next Generation Supercar Info Revealed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1156

During an interview with Argentina Auto Blog, Horacio Pagani confirmed the Zonda-replacing C9 will be launched towards the end of 2010. It will feature a 6.0-liter V12 Mercedes-Benz AMG engine with 515 kW and 1000 Nm of torque, which means the C9 will be almost as powerful as the Zonda R (which churns out 552 kW and 710 Nm of torque).

According to Horacio Pagani, the C9 "is a completely new car from concept, weight distribution, materials and dynamics." It will have 3770 new parts, a carbon-titanium chassis, specially developed Pirelli tires, and Bosch electronics. More importantly, the car will be able to meet U.S. crash safety standards and California's strict emission laws.

Production will likely be limited to 40 units a year, with a base price of roughly €900,000 ($1,265,000 USD).

Besides talking about the C9, Pagani stated 'normal' Zonda production will cease in September - but orders are still coming in for one-off versions and the Zonda R. In theory, the Zonda could live on for another three years.

VÄTH Shows Mercedes E-Class E63 AMG Tuning Program

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1157

Dubbed the VÄTH V63RS, the car features a sinister exterior with a starless grille, a boot spoiler, a carbon fiber diffuser, and a carbon fiber front lip spoiler. Other styling tweaks include a suspension lowering module, which reduces the ride height by 30 mm, and 20-inch forged three-piece alloy wheels wrapped in high performance rubber.

Inside, the V63RS has carbon trim and velour floor mats with an embroidered VÄTH logo.

Under the hood, VÄTH enlarged the cylinder head channels, installed new engine management software, and added new pistons, valves, sport cam shafts, a larger intake, and bigger exhaust valves. Thanks to these modifications, the engine produces 445 kW and 690 Nm of torque (an increase of 64 kW and 60 Nm of torque). This allows the V63RS to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, before topping out at 340 km/h. When it's time to stop, massive 390mm brake discs (with 8 pistons fixed calipers up front) bring you to a halt.

Renault under pressure

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1146

President Nicolas Sarkozy grilled top managers of carmaker Renault on Saturday but failed to win pledges from them to centre production of their new small car at a factory in France rather than in Turkey.

French Industry Minister Christian Estrosi has heaped pressure on Renault to make cars destined for the French market at home, even suggesting the state could raise its 15.01% stake in the group to get a bigger say.

At stake is where the new Clio 4, expected in 2013, will be produced. Renault is looking at sharing production out between a plant in Bursa, Turkey and Flins near Paris, with most of the work expected to go to the Turkish factory.

Renault executive chairman Carlos Ghosn and chief operating officer Patrick Pelata talked for over an hour with Sarkozy and Estrosi. They left shortly after 1700 GMT without making a comment to reporters waiting outside the Elysee palace.

But a statement from the president's office suggested Sarkozy had been unsuccessful in convincing Renault's management to locate the lion's share of the new Clio work in France.

It said Ghosn had agreed to keep jobs at the Flins plant and make both electrical and fossil-fuel cars there in the future.

In a separate statement, Ghosn said he had confirmed to the president that the Clio 4 would be made in Flins and Bursa.

He added the future of the Flins plant was guaranteed and employment would be maintained.

"My responsibility and my motivation is to make Renault an innovative winner in an industry undergoing deep transformation," he said.

Renault was privatised in 1996. In addition to the French government's stake, Japanese ally Nissan Motor Co has 15 percent of the company. It is the country's second-largest carmaker behind PSA Peugeot Citroen.

In February last year, France provided $4.33bn each to the carmakers in five year bonds, at a rate of 6%, to finance investments into clean vehicle production and the makers agreed to avoid slashing jobs in 2009. European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said on Thursday that she would study again whether there were hidden conditions attached to these loans that limited the companies' freedom to conduct their business.

Work on the current Clio, launched in 1990, is shared between Flins, Bursa, Novo Mesto in Slovenia and Valladolid in Spain. The Turkish plant is a joint venture with Oyak Group and Renault owns a 51 percent stake

Renault makes 180,000 Clio cars per year in Turkey and some 125 000 in Flins. In 2008, Renault was No. 11 on the world car production ranking and its 44-percent subsidiary and ally Nissan was No. 6. Combined they made more cars than Ford and fewer than Toyota, Volkswagen and General Motors.

Speedsters welcome in Eastern Cape

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1147

Speedsters need not beware in the Nelson Mandela Bay area - their traffic officers issued fewer than a fine a day in the last financial year, reported The Herald Online on Wednesday.

This is compared to the national standard of 10 fines a day.

Metro police task team leader Trish Armstrong revealed in a briefing to the budget and treasury committee on Tuesday that the 93 traffic officers in the city issued fewer than one fine a day.

Traffic wardens issued fewer than two fines a day - the second lowest in the country, said Armstrong.

This while traffic officers seemed to clock overtime full-time - several had claimed that they worked 18 hours a day for 30 consecutive days.

Armstrong told the committee this was "biologically impossible".

Only 28% of speed cameras were operational, she added.

The municipality was also grappling with R99 million in outstanding traffic fines.

All-New 2011 Mazda5 Revealed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1148

Set to go on sale in Europe this fall, the redesigned Mazda5 features Mazda's "Nagare Flow" design language, dual-sliding rear doors, and seating for up to seven. According to Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Program Manager, "Our main goal with the all-new Mazda5, was to develop a new C-MAV (C-segment Multi Activity Vehicle) that combines the superior environmental performance these times demand with a new expression in stylish design."

Under the hood, power comes from a new 2.0-liter DISI1 petrol engine that has been outfitted with an engine start/start system (called i-stop). While official fuel economy ratings weren't released, Mazda says the engine will make the Mazda5 "one of the most frugal and clean C-MAVs on the market, achieving approximately 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 2.0-liter petrol it replaces." If that doesn't float your boat, the company will also offer a 1.8-liter petrol engine. It will likely produce 85 kW and 165 Nm of torque.

2011 MINI Countryman Official Details Released

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1149

Information about a new MINI crossover vehicle has been distributed by the company confirming that the car will be called the MINI Countryman in most markets. The BMW-owned manufacturer officially sent out the detailed press release (see below) )and over 50 photos just one day after news broke with a leak of three of the pictures.

MINI's 4,097 mm long SAV comes with five different 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines, including three petrols and two turbodiesels. The MINI One D Countryman is tuned to 66 kW and up to 214 Nm of torque. It hits 100 km/h in 13.2 seconds, and runs up to 170 km/h. The Mini One kicks out 72 kW and 153 Nm of torque, sprinting to 100 km/h in 12.7 seconds before hitting a 175 km/h top speed. The Cooper D Countryman gets to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds thanks to its 82 kW, 270 Nm engine. Top speed is 180 km/h, but the Cooper Countryman tops out at 190 km/h. That vehicle also shaves nearly a half-second off the 100 km/h sprint thanks to the 90 kW, 160 Nm produced by the engine.

At the top of the line, the Mini Cooper S Countryman reaches 100 km/h in a much quicker 7.6 seconds thanks in part to the direct injection, twin-scroll turbocharged engine. Performance is boosted to 135 kW and 240 Nm of torque, but 260 Nm can be achieved with the overboost function. Top speed reaches 214 km/h.

Start/stop, brake energy recovery, on-demand engine management, and a shift point light help the driver manage fuel consumption. The range uses between 4.3 and 6.3 liters of fuel to get the car across a distance of 100 km. This translates to 6.3 to 4.3 l/100km. Emissions are kept impressively low to between 113 and 146 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Choosing the six-speed semiautomatic over the standard six-speed manual will slightly change these figures.

Suspension on the car was stepped up from that available on company's other vehicles, with a 10mm lowered sport suspension also on offer. Optionally available is the All4 all-wheel-drive, which works off of an electrohydraulic center differential, and is fully integrated with the stability control. Under certain circumstances, 100% of the power can be sent to the rear.

The automaker is giving standard 16-inch wheels with the car (17-inches on the Cooper S Countryman), all of which will look ridiculously small. Several sets of optional wheels, up to 19-inches, will also be available.

The five-door vehicle comes standard with four individual seats, also seen on the Crossover Concept and the Beachcomber Concept, but a three-seat bench is available for no extra charge. However, it is hard to imagine the car with both the bench and the Center Rail. The rail runs the length of the passenger compartment, and is meant to provide storage flexibility with a set of "clip-in elements." The cargo area holds 350 liters, but can be expanded up to 1,170 liters with the seats folded down.

Some of the options available include an "extra-large" panoramic roof, adaptive headlights, towbar, heated windshield, Bluetooth, sat-nav, and upgraded stereo.

As we reported earlier, the car comes with newly-designed chrome-ringed headlights, three windows on each side, a new radiator grille, and larger wheel arches. The black framing around the vehicle's bottom is standard, and does not appear to be available in body color.

You can read a great deal more about the MINI Countryman in the press release below. Pricing has not yet been revealed. The MINI Countryman will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

9ff GTurbo Conversions Up to 735kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1151

First off, let's get to the core goodies. A bi-turbo conversion kit that can boost power up to 735 kW. This allows for the creation of 3 seperately named models : the 9ff GTurbo750, GTurbo850 and GTurbo1000. The numbers, of course, denoting the horsepower figures. The torque figures, respectively, being 850 Nm, 910 Nm and 940 Nm.

Performance times for the GTurbo1000 are 2.9 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint and a mere 8.2 seconds to reach 200 km/h. The 300 km/h mark is reache in 16.5 seconds. A top speed of 392 km/h is also possible, dependent on gearing selection.

An aerodynamic kit is also available, which includes air intakes on the quarter panel for the intercooler and air outlets at the front to help reduce pressure in the wheel wells at high speeds.

There are also new front (with LED indicators) and rear aprons, side skirts and options for side exhausts.

TechArt GT Street RS Sets New Lap Record

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1152

When German tuners TechArt modified the Porsche GT2 little did their engineers know that the car would shatter the Sachsenring lap record set last year. The TechArt GT Street RS slashed over four seconds off the old time, finishing the 3,671 meter circuit in 1:31.94.

The car embarassed the previous record-holding Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, which finished the same lap in 1:36.29.

The test run was recorded by AutoBild, who arranged for a comparison between the TechArt and several other cars. Amongst the tests was a 0-100 km/h sprint, that the GT Street RS finished in 3.5 seconds.

With 507 kW and up to 860 Nm of torque, the TechArt GT Street RS shows improvements over the 997 GT2 by 118 kW and nearly 176 Nm.

GM to close Opel plant

US carmaker General Motors will close its Opel plant in the Belgian port city of Antwerp, sources said on Wednesday, slamming the door on hopes to save the jobs of the site's 2 300 staff.

GM has warned for weeks that the plant's future was in jeopardy as it moves to chop more than 8 000 jobs and cut European capacity by a fifth, but it had refrained until now from making a final decision.

"They did not back down from the decision to close Antwerp. Now (Opel Chief Executive Nick) Reilly has announced that this would be implemented," a company source said.

Reilly has long stated his preference that the group's planned subcompact SUV would be manufactured not in Antwerp as originally planned but in South Korea by Daewoo, the GM unit where both he and Opel's new chief financial officer previously served in top management.

Daewoo is already in charge of developing GM's global subcompact "Gamma" platform that will underpin the future Corsa hatchback and Meriva small van.

A spokesman for the Flemish government said there was nothing new to report and said the regional authority remained committed to securing a future for the plant.

Opel and its British sister brand Vauxhall - rescued by a German government bailout last year when GM briefly dipped into US bankruptcy - are pushing through a radical shrinking programme amid weak car markets.

The company is counting on around 2.7 billion euros ($3.8 billion) in European taxpayer aid for the scheme, details of which are supposed to emerge this month.
