Price cut for two wheels at tolls

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1507

Motorcyclists will pay less for toll charges when the electronic toll collection system is launched in April next year, said Freedom Front Plus parliamentary spokesman for transport, Pieter Groenewald, on Wednesday.

"They will be in a category of their own with regards to toll roads and will then be paying less toll fees," Groenewald said in a statement after getting an official reply to a question from the minister of transport.

The system would be implemented as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.

Groenewald said it was unfair that motorbikes were much lighter than ordinary cars but had been charged the same fee.

"This boils down to motorcyclists actually subsidising other vehicles. The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the decision and will ask further questions to ensure that new categories will take effect," he said.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS first official details

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1508

Official details and photos have been released on the upcoming Porsche GT2 RS.

Well, we were right about the power wattage - it will indeed be 462 kW - and wrong about the number of units that Porsche will produce - 500 will be made not 300. Weight loss versus the 911 GT2 will be a substantial 70 kg (as opposed to the previously reported 90 kg).

That power rating will make this the most potent Porsche road car in history. And its quite a technical achievement to squeeze all those kilowatts from a 3.6 liter boxer engine, much of it attributable to the two variable turbine geometry turbochargers.

The details:

The car will weigh a mere 1,370 kilograms, giving it a power to weight ratio of 2.21 kg per horsepower, and rides on 245/35 ZR 19 tires at the front and 325/30 ZR 19 for the rear axle. It will come with anti-roll bars and Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM).

It's time on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife track: 7 minutes and 18 seconds. 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 to 300 km/h in 28.9 seconds. Top speed: 205 mph or 330 km/h.

To shed weight, Porsche makes use of carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) components, such as the CFR plastic for the bucket seats.

"GT2 RS" tags are placed on the doors and rear lid to distinguish the car too.

The car will be available in Europe from September 2010, in the USA from October 2010.

The new GT2 RS is set for its first public unveiling on August 25 at the Moscow auto show.

Moving further back, the side profile is dominated by aggressive rocker panels, fender flare extensions, and massive aluminum wheels which measure 23x11 inches.

Irish tuners Onyx Concept have released two new kits for the 2010 Range Rover Sport and Vogue. Both the Platinum S and Platinum V packages combine to provide better engine performance, and a full set of body modifications.

Power on the 3.6-liter V8 turbo diesel engine can be boosted by 30% to 259 kW while the 5.0-liter supercharged petrol V8 engine is bumped up by about 26%. The top shelf petrol now boasts 474 kW thanks to a remapped engine control unit, a new supercharger pulley, and undisclosed "other tweaks."

New front and rear bumpers were also installed, as were modified spoilers and new fender flares. Parts were built out of both carbon fiber and fiber-reinforced plastic. Interior mods include the generous use of buffalo-hide leather.

Pricing for the Onyx Platinum S and Platinum V packages have not yet been revealed.

BMW M3 GTS performance specs released

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1512

BMW announced late today that the BMW M3 GTS has gotten the green light.

The low-volume car will likely be an exhilarating ride, as the 0-100 km/h was reduced by 0.2 seconds compared to the normal M3 coupe. The 4.4-second time is thanks to the V8 engine, and its 8.7% power increase to 331 kW. Torque was also boosted by 10% to a maximum 440 Nm. A 10% increase in cylinder stroke allowed the GTS' engine displacement to top 4.36-liters, up from the 4.0-liter displacement of the V8 engine on the M3.

Not surprisingly, the engine is mated to the fast shifting seven-speed M Dual Clutch Transmission, which helps the car sprint across the one kilometer mark in 22.5 seconds. Top speed of the car is 305 km/h.

Other features on the car include Y-spoke 19-inch M alloy wheels, and a full set of aerodynamic upgrades, like the new front apron with variable air ducts, and rear spoiler. Also seen on the car are tuned variants of the Dynamic Stability Control, Anti-lock Brakes, and M Dynamic Mode systems.

The BMW M3 GTS weighs 70 kg less than the 1,600 kg M3. The GTS is a street legal model. Customers in Germany will be able to purchase the car from July 2010, with production taking place in Garching, Germany.
