Tearful Toyoda apologises

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1287

Toyota President Akio Toyoda apologised to US lawmakers probing the automaker's safety record and ended the day in tears, in what Japanese politicians hoped was a first step towards rebuilding trust in the country's most valuable company.

Toyoda, peppered with questions about a massive recall that has rocked Toyota's reputation, told lawmakers he was "deeply sorry" for accidents and injuries involving its cars.

He said Toyota had lost its way during a period of fast growth but vowed to steer it back to the values that made it a watchword for quality.

Cheered by Toyota plant workers and dealers at an event organized by the automaker on Wednesday evening in Washington, Toyoda broke into tears under a giant display bearing the name of the company that his legendary grandfather founded.

"I believe that Toyota has always worked for the benefit of the United States," Toyoda said. "I tried to convey that message from the heart, but whether it was broadly understood or not, I don't know."

He also offered a sober assessment of the challenges still ahead: "We at Toyota are at a crossroad. We need to rethink everything about our operation."

Toyoda's appearance in Washington marked a dramatic peak in a safety crisis that broke a month ago with a series of recalls over unintended acceleration and braking problems that now include more than 8.5m vehicles globally.

Politicians in Japan are worried about the potential fallout from the crisis. Toyota, with a market value of about $125bn, is at the the heart of a massive supplier network that is vital to the economy's health.

Investors, who have knocked about $30bn of its market value in the past month, appeared to view Toyoda's hearing as a step forward. Toyota's stock rose 0.6% in Tokyo, outperforming a slight fall in the broader market.

"It was good that the Toyota president himself appeared before the panel and testified," Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama told reporters in Tokyo on Thursday.

"I don't think this marks the end of everything. He spoke of working to make improvements. This is a matter involving cars, that affects people's lives, so the important thing is pay close attention to safety and to fulfil its aim to make improvements where they are needed. I'm hopeful and I think they will do so."

Japanese Trade Minister Masayuki Naoshima said Toyota's problems could have an impact on the image of Japanese products and that he wanted the car maker to win back consumer trust.

Electronics probed

The costs of the recall are set to grow with an agreement with New York state to speed customer repairs and provide alternative transportation, a pact likely to expand to other states.

Toyoda's efforts to reassure U.S. officials and consumers were undercut by a confrontation over a 2009 memo in which Toyota boasts of saving $100m by persuading safety regulators to accept a relatively cheap recall of floor mats implicated in the unintended acceleration.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who preceded Toyoda before the committee, simply labeled recalled Toyota vehicles as "not safe."

Dressed in a gray, pinstriped suit, Toyoda said he, more than anyone, wanted Toyota cars to be safe. "My name is on every car," he said in English before using an interpreter to answer questions.

But Toyoda rejected the possibility that some of the acceleration problems are in the electronics rather than the recalled sticky accelerator mechanisms and floor mats that can trap the accelerator pedal.

Chris Gidez, director of risk management and crisis communications at Hill & Knowlton, said Toyoda gets points for coming from Japan to testify and judgments will not be made in just one hearing. "This is going to be a marathon for Toyota."

Five deaths

The unintended acceleration problems have been linked to five US deaths, with 29 other fatality reports being examined by US authorities.

Representative Paul Kanjorski, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, warned Toyoda that his company would have to pay for the deaths and injuries as U.S. lawsuits mount. "You will be called upon to pay compensation," Kanjorski said.

Rep. John Mica, a Florida Republican, called it an embarrassing day for regulators and for Toyota.

"I'm embarrassed for you, sir," Mica told Toyota's North American President Yoshimi Inaba, who was testifying with Toyoda. "I'm embarrassed for the thousands of Americans who work at 10 plants across the United States."

Toyota now faces a criminal investigation and a securities probe in the US as well as unresolved questions about hundreds of incidents of unintended acceleration reported by consumers.

The FBI raided the Detroit operations of three Japanese suppliers of electronic components to the auto industry on Wednesday. Denso Corp confirmed the raids were unrelated to the Toyota recalls.

Toyota has promised internal reforms, including a new committee on safety chaired by Toyoda himself.

Jim Press, a former North American chief for Toyota who left in 2007, said the company had become dominated by "anti-family, financially oriented pirates" and needed Toyoda at the helm.

"Akio Toyoda is not only up for the job, but he is the only person who can save Toyota," Press wrote in an e-mail to industry publication Automotive News.

Toyoda, who took just a few questions from reporters, only appeared to relax at the evening rally organised for Toyota dealers and workers.

One woman who works in a Toyota plant in Alabama, building engines, asked what she could do to help the company in its crisis. "Let's make a better car," Toyoda said, breaking into English.

Hummer sale to Chinese collapses

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1288

Yet another part of GM's fire sale to get rid of non-core brands has collapsed. A deal by GM to sell Hummer to China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery has been cancelled after months of negotiations.

As a result, the Hummer brand will be wound down completely. Its remaining stock of under 2,500 units will be sold off, with warranties guaranteed by GM, and as many as 3,650 jobs in Indiana, Louisiana, and Michigan will likely be eliminated.

The two sides have been working in earnest since last summer, when GM announced they had a buyer for Hummer one day after their 2009 bankruptcy filing. Few details of the agreement have leaked out since, but it is believed the marque was sold for $150 million.

However, the Chinese company needed regulatory approval from China's national government, who declined the transaction in an ongoing effort to encourage smaller fuel efficient vehicles. "Tengzhong is disappointed that the transaction cannot be further pursued, but the company respects the outcome," the company said in a statement. "Tengzhong worked earnestly to achieve an acquisition that it believed to be a tremendous opportunity to acquire a global brand at an attractive price."

General Motors has failed in its attempt to sell Saturn and Opel/Vauxhall. The deal to sell Swedish brand Saab to Dutch supercar maker Spyker closed yesterday after months of turmoil.

"We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said GM Vice President John Smith. "GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."

GMSA unaffected by Hummer demise

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1289

The announcement by General Motors that it will wind-down the Hummer brand will have no impact on General Motors' operations in South Africa.

In a statement on Thursday, GMSA said while it no longer distributed and sold Hummer vehicles, it remained fully committed to looking after its customers.

"Hummer customers can be assured that we will continue to offer full after sales support and that we will honour all warranty agreements," GMSA spokeswoman Denise van Huyssteen said.

She said that GMSA halted Hummer H3 production in May 2009 and the process of consolidating manufacturing operations at the Struandale production facility had commenced.

On Wednesday, GMSA's parent company in the United States said the deal to sell Hummer to a Chinese automaker had fallen through, forcing the company to shut down the loss-making brand.

Hummer is the third brand that GM has had to wind-down following its bankruptcy.

R5.5 billion for Gauteng's roads

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1290

About R5.5 billion has been committed towards the construction and upgrading of roads in Gauteng, the provincial department of roads and transport said on Wednesday.

MEC Bheki Nkosi said in a statement that his department had entered into a partnership with its private sector partners, in which the money was committed to road works over the next five years.

"This plan will yield the construction and maintenance of 1 500km of provincial roads," he said.

By the end of this financial year, the department would have upgraded 80km of roads in Sharpeville, Refiloe, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Kagiso, Katlehong, Mohlakeng and Orlando.

The roads in these areas had been upgraded from gravel to tar, with the installation of storm water drainage systems.

Nkosi said the department will also construct pavements on high volume pedestrian roads within the 20 prioritised townships.

New number plates

The department also intended ensuring that at least 200 000 vehicles had the new aluminium number plates with security features by the end of October 2010.

This would partly involve a roll call of all vehicles in Gauteng to ensure that they were properly registered and licensed.

Nkosi said plans to root out corruption in driver's license testing centres were also underway with the installation of high-tech testing systems across Gauteng to reduce the dominance of human factors in test outcomes.

The department also planned to expand its centres for service delivery by entering into service level agreements with the South African post office on driver's license renewal sites.

Roads ready by April 2010

Meanwhile, Nkosi said the key strategic road network for smooth travel during the 2010 Fifa World Cup would be ready by the end of April.

These roads included the K29 Malibongwe Drive upgrade, which links Lanseria Airport with Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The upgrading of the Albertina Sisulu highway, which is a crucial gateway into the province from OR Tambo International Airport, would also be completed by the end of April 2010.

Nkosi said the department would complete the beautification of this route at the same time as the upgrading.

He also mentioned that the Gautrain project's phase one, which is the link between Sandton and the OR Tambo International Airport, was expected to be completed by June 2010.

"This presentation becomes our 2010/11 service delivery map for each of the programmes highlighted by the premier during her state of the province address on Monday," Nkosi said.

2011 Porsche Cayenne Official Photos and Details

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1291

Porsche will put the next generation Porsche Cayenne for sale in Europe on May 8. This will follow the SUV's world debut in Geneva next week, and its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show at the end of March.

U.S. customers wanting to pick up the S or the Turbo will have to wait until July. The Cayenne and Cayenne S Hybrid will not hit the North American market until the fall. Each of these will be released as a 2011 model.

Porsche will use a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 221 kW for the entry level model. The S-badged SUV uses a 4.8-liter V8 engine producing 294 kW, while the Cayenne Turbo uses the same engine with an additional twin-turbo unit. With the turbo, it produces 368 kW. Both V8 versions use 23% less fuel than the last version, while the V6 uses 20% less.

Meanwhile, the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid makes use of a supercharged 245 kW 3.0-liter V6 engine and a 34 kW electric motor, to boost output to 279 kW and up to 580 Nm of torque at 1,000 rpm. The hybrid is capable of short all-electric drives at speeds up to 64 km/h. Fuel economy was not revealed, though it produces just 193 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This makes the Cayenne S Hybrid the cleanest Porsche vehicle in their current catalogue.

Look for the next-generation Porsche Cayenne to have an available eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, start/stop, and significant weight savings. This can be seen on the Cayenne S which is 181 kg lighter than the current version.

2011 VW CrossGolf Receives Facelift

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1292

Volkswagen has announced a third world debut slated for the Geneva Motor Show. The company will introduce a new version of the Volkswagen CrossGolf at next week's automotive showcase.

Although the company refers to this as "the second generation CrossGolf," in reality the car represents little more than a facelift. Freshened up styling follows "the new Volkswagen Design DNA," and brings the car up to date with recent VW releases. The car features new front bumper, grille, integrated fog lights, and more. The car rides 20 mm higher, and on 17-inch alloy wheels, to allow for light off-roading.

When the facelifted Volkswagen CrossGolf comes to market in April, it will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, which are both direct-injection and turbocharged. The five engines are topped by a 1.4-liter TSI produces about 118 kW and up to 240Nm, while the 2.0-liter TDI produces 103 kW and up to 320 Nm of torque.

Toyota suppliers raided by FBI

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1293

Toyota is unwittingly in bad headlines once again after three of its suppliers were raided by FBI agents on Tuesday. Denso, Yazaki and Tokai Rika had their offices searched by the law enforcement officers in what has been described as an investigation concerning anti-trust issues.

"The anti-trust division is investigating the possibility of anti-competitive cartel conduct of automotive electronic components suppliers," said Gina Talamona, deputy director of public affairs for the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. "We are coordinating with the European Commission and other foreign competition authorities."

Toyota is aware of the investigations. Denso supplies Toyota with a number of components, including accelerator pedal mechanisms, but says this particular investigation is unrelated to that matter. A Denso spokesperson also said the pedal module her company produces for Toyota is not a subject of the current recall which has seen up to 4.8 million vehicles being recalled.

Switzer Details P800 Tuning Package for 911 Turbo

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1294

Porsche developed their variable-vane "VTG" turbo technology to spool more quickly than conventional turbochargers, making their latest 997 Turbo models respond more like the naturally-aspirated V8 and V12 competition from Ferrari, Aston Martin, and others.

"When I first saw the new variable-vane technology the 997 Turbos, I was impressed," explains Tym Switzer. "The more I looked at the VTGs, though, when we flow-tested them and really started putting them to work, I began to realize that it would feasible to develop a turbocharger package that could match the VTG's responsiveness while out-performing them in the midrange and top end. That we were able to develop this package so quickly is a direct result of the incredible progress in aftermarket turbo technology that has taken place over the last few years. Our technology partners can deliver exactly the turbos we need to achieve the performance targets we specify for a given build - and we work together closely to achieve those targets with more run-after-run consistency than a factory VTG-based turbo can provide."

If Tym's name seems familiar, it's because Switzer Performance (the Ohio-based tuning firm that carries his name) has been making big waves in the tuning industry since their clients in Russia, the MidEast, and other world markets began posting videos of their match races all over YouTube last summer.

"We know a bit about making real-world power," adds Tym, "and once we decided to go beyond 515 kW with the efficiencies required for maximum consistency, reliability, and throttle-response, we realized it was time to move away from the VTGs, which are on the living edge at 552 kW and well beyond their practical, everyday limits."

Common internet wisdom holds that turbocharged engines are exercises in compromise. You can have quick-spooling turbos, and you can have turbos that pull hard to redline, but not both. Switzer's views on the matter? "While incredibly responsive, the VTGs do suffer from some weaknesses when the performance bar is raised significantly." Pointing to torque and horsepower curves that match the factory VTGs in initial spool up, then run away from the VTGs all the way to the P800's new 7500 rpm redline. "With the new P800, you can really have the cake and eat it, too, in a car that you can drive back and forth to the office without drama, and it will still deliver an incredible rush at the track."

First announced in August 2009, Switzer's P800 package for the 997 Turbo includes Switzer's competition-style exhaust and headers, electronic boost control, Switzer-specific TiAL Alpha turbochargers, MONSTER intercoolers, and an ECU software tune to bring it all together in a package that drives like a stock 997 TT ... until the go-pedal hits the floor. "The great thing about this package is that the power delivery is more linear than with the VTGs, so the P800 car is actually smoother than the factory TT, without any of the oscillation you get periodically from the DME's dynamic control of the vane mechanism on the VTG," explains Tym. "This is a great example of our tuning philosophy: we're not about peak power, we're about best power."

The P800 package is available now through Switzer Performance dealers.

2011 Nissan Navara and Pathfinder Facelifts

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1295

Nissan says the Navara has been Europe's best-selling pickup since its launch. It wants to keep that going by making the car and its SUV sibling more attractive.

Exterior changes include new front bumpers that give an extra 80mm to both vehicles, a new bonnet, a revised front grille, new headlamp styling and a different rear bumper. Also on offer are new 18-inch wheels to compliment existing ones.

The interior benefits from revised door trims, more tactile armrests and door pads, redesigned dials, the addition of chrome highlights and a new all-wheel-drive command control switch for the Pathfinder. Other nice items include the Nissan Connect Premium with a new high resolution touch screen, a 40GB hard drive and an optional Bose sound system.

Big news on the engine front is the new 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel developed in cooperation with partner Renault. It makes 170kW and peak torque of 550Nm from 1700rpm up to 2500rpm. Nissan says 500Nm is already on tap from 1500rpm.

The 2.5-litre dCi also went to engineering for some extra beef. Power has been upped to 140kW and torque is now 450Nm. It delivers an average of 8.5l/100km while C02 emissions are rated at 224 g/km.

Nissan unveils the facelift Navara and Pathfinder at Geneva 2010 and European sales start in April. Sales of models fitted with the V6 diesel only start around June.

Lawyers take on Road Accident Fund

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1298

The Law Society of SA (LSSA) plans to challenge the Road Accident Fund Amendment Act's constitutionality in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Barbara Whittle said the LSSA, joined by 10 other applicants, believed the act was unconstitutional as it removed road accident victims' common-law right to claim for fair compensation from the wrongdoer.

It also provided that only persons who suffered from "serious" injuries were entitled to claim general damages from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

This excluded many claimants who might have suffered severely debilitating injuries from qualifying from claiming any compensation for pain and suffering and disfigurement from the RAF.

Claims capped

The act also capped a claimants claim against the RAF for past and future loss of income or support to R160 000 per year and restricted compensation for emergency treatment to a reduced tariff.

"(This) will be insufficient reasonably to ensure that accident victims will obtain emergency medical care where they need it," said Whittle.

In addition to this, the act limited claims for hospital and medical care to provincial hospital tariffs.

"This breaches road accident victims' right to security of their person, the right to an appropriate and effective remedy for breaches of that right, as well as the obligation of the state to respect, protect, promote and fulfil those rights," said Whittle.

Violates constitution

Whittle said the LSSA would submit the act was in violation of section 38 of the Constitution.

"No justification has been given for the deprivation or limitation of these rights and this is accordingly not justifiable in an open and democratic society based on human dignity, equality and freedom," she said.

The case is expected to start with applications by the ministers of health and finance to intervene as parties on the side of the respondents, the minister of transport and the Road Accident Fund.

Yamaha launches R1200 GS slayer

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1299

After much anticipation Yamaha has just released the first photos and specs of the company’s BMW R1200 GS rivalling 2010 XT1200Z Ténéré. Yamaha first showed the XT1200Z as a concept at the 2009 Toyko Motor Show when they unveiled a skeletal metal frame wrapped up in Bedouin-like cloth. Now, at last, the wraps have properly come off.

Powered by a 1,1199cm3 parallel twin (boasting 80.9kW and torque of 114.1Nm which is much on par with the BMW R1200 GS), the XT1200Z shares a lot of its technological innovation with Yamaha’s R1 supersport bike – most notably its crossplane crankshaft.

Whereas two cylinder engines with a flat plane crankshaft fires at consistently equal intervals, the crossplane crankshaft fires two cylinders at the normal intervals, and the next two straight after one another. Put differently, if a traditional four cylinder’s rhythm were played on a drum its beat would be “one, two, three, four” with combustion occurring on each number. The XT1200Z engine’s beat would be “one, two, three, one, two, one, one, two” with combustion taking place on each of the “one” beats.

By firing two cylinders in such short succession it essentially creates one long blast. What this means for you as a rider is that there is virtually no sluggishness in the delivery of torque and there is a very direct and linear connection between the throttle and the rear wheel (via an all-new shaft drive).

To help get the maximum power from the inline twin engine to the road (or washed out trail if that is more your bag), the XT1200Z has been treated to a three-mode traction control system which can easily be turned off when it’s time for some rear wheel steering on a loose surface.

The traction control module measures front and rear wheel speed, uses this data to determine when the rear wheel loses traction, and then modulates the ignition timing, the fuel injection and the ride-by-wire system to optimise rear grip.

ABS comes standard as part of the Ténéré’s electronic Unified Brake System which is “one of the most advanced braking systems Yamaha has ever built”. Unfortunately the ABS system cannot be switched off (unlike the traction control) as is possible on BMW’s GS bikes.

Still, the Super Ténéré is very much a go-anywhere adventure machine with spoked wheels, generous ground clearance and tough engine protection. The entire design is tuned to keep the bike’s mass low and central for perfect balance and light, agile handling at speed, and the riding position has been optimised for sitting or standing.

There is no doubt that the Super Ténéré is squarely aimed at the popular dual-purpose market that BMW has been successfully hogging for the last decade. This Yamaha has a much stronger off-road focus than competitors like the Triumph Tiger and Suzuki V-Strom and its built on a very firm Ténéré heritage which Yamaha established in the ’80s and ’90s.

Would you trade your 1200 GS in for a new XT1200Z?

Gemballa files for insolvency

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1280

Missing European Porsche tuning master Uwe Gemballa’s company has filed for insolvency.

The Leonberg concern, which is globally renowned for its elaborate Porsche styling embellishments and performance upgrades, has been in a state of flux since founder and owner, Uwe Gemballa (54), went missing soon after arriving in South African on February 8.

Since Gemballa’s disappearance in Johannesburg there has been a raft of rumour mongering, including a kidnapping and ransom scenario.

South Africa’s international reputation as a country besieged by opportunistic crime forced many to a preconceived conclusion that Gemballa had been kidnapped.

Money, money everywhere?

A day after Gemballa arrived in South Africa (ostensibly on business with an eye on opening up an agency for his conversions in the burgeoning local market) German police say he phoned his wife. Gemballa then requested a large sum of money to be wired to a bank account after he had apparently been involved in an accident…

Back in Germany though, allegations of tax evasion and financial mismanagement at Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co gained momentum.

The presence of German authorities at the facility in Leonberg was made off as a regulation part of any missing person’s investigation by a Gemballa spokesperson, Ekkehard Krebs.

German authorities confirmed two police officers were dispatched to South African to assist local authorities with the investigation. South African Police Services spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo admitted, "there is no trace of him."

Grandma takes over Gemballa?

The most troubling part of Uwe Gemballa’s mystery disappearance thus far are the public records. These came to light as a German court declared it had received an insolvency application from Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co.

It would appear Uwe had some urgent business to attend to before he left for South Africa…

On 5 February, two days before leaving for Johannesburg, Uwe updated Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co's records with details of a second company he had opened with exceptional expedience. His 79-year-old mother is listed as the sole stockholder of this new "venture" - cryptically named Gemballa Sports Cars GmbH & Co.

Uwe also gave his wife power of attorney before "disappearing" to South Africa, and it’s after her application that a court in Ludwigsburg appointed a provisional liquidator as of Tuesday.

It would appear Uwe Gemballa has enacted the action of one of his most famous creations, the Carrera GT Mirage - and simply disappeared into the heat haze of the African continent.

Athletic boss's R1 E-Class

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1281

Former Athletics SA (ASA) boss Leonard Chuene bought a car, an E Class Mercedes-Benz, from the embattled organisation for just R1 in 2004, eNews reported.

The revelation was made to the broadcaster during an interview with ASA's administrator, Ray Mali.

Mali said he made the discovery while going through the minutes of previous ASA board meetings. He also discovered that three other cars were sold to ASA officials for R1 each.

ASA's previous board was removed from office for alleged financial mismanagement and their handling of athlete Caster Semenya's gender verification saga.

"It's just a transaction by the board. Some members of the board just stood up and proposed that the cars be sold to Leonard and others to certain individuals," Mali told eNews.

He also established that ASA was still paying for the licensing of the car in Chuene's possession and he is now investigating whether the car was sold to him irregularly.

In a written response to ASA's legal enquiry, Chuene's lawyers said the car was given to him as part of his remuneration package.

G-Power 760i STORM Tuning Program Announced

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1282

Engineers at G-Power have created a new set of mods for the BMW 7-Series F01. The tuning outfit will be selling the G-Power 760i Storm as a made-to-order level of customization for new buyers.

The modifications rotate around changes to the turbocharger unit. The 6.0-liter V12 engine is normally mated with the bi-turbo "TwinPower" stock unit from BMW. Instead, G-Power tapped engineers at ASA to create radial compressors (turbo charger compressor units) that work off the crankshaft, thus increasing their output.

Turbo boost pressure goes up from 0.5 bar to 0.9 bar, and the added injection valves and exhaust lead to an extra 133 kW. The car now has access to 533 kW and up to 1000 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm, in part thanks to a remapped engine computer. Changes were also made to the OEM eight-speed transmission.

0-100 km/h now takes 4.2 seconds, with 200 km/h being recorded in 11.9 seconds. Top speed registers at 345 km/h. These speeds are also helped by new aerodynamics at the front skirt, bonnet, side skirts, doors, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler. With the new springs, the car is dropped by 30 mm. The car now rides on 9.5x22 front and 10.5x22 three-piece aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin tires.

Only 10 units of the G-Power 760i Storm will be produced. Pricing was not disclosed.

Spyker finalizes purchase of Saab from GM

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1283

Spyker Cars of the Netherlands has finalised its purchase of the SAAB Automobile company from previous owner General Motors. The deal is worth US$74 million (€54.7 million). GM will retain preferred shares in SAAB worth US$326 million.

"From today we will be concentrating all of our efforts into reviving Saab and transforming it into a sustainable and profitable company," said Spyker CE Victor Muller.

Muller will not be directly at the helm of his new subsidiary though, that job is for Jan Jonsson who is tasked with turning the Swedish company's €400 million loss from 2009 into a profit. Incidentally Spyker itself made a loss to the tune of €8.7 million in the first half of 2009.

"Now we aim to get back to the execution of our business plan, starting with the introduction of the new 9-5 later this year," Jonsson said.

Volvo C70 Facelift Tuned by Heico Sportiv

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1284

The Heico Sportiv-tuned facelift Volvo C70 will be exhibited at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show next week. Heico aims to blend its vision with what Volvo originally intended for the C70, without protruding or appearing too after-market.

"Our program kicks in where Volvo's leaves off," says Heico Sportiv General Manager, Holger Hedtke. "It's characterised by supplementation rather than substitution."

Installed parts include a front spoiler forged in flexible, lightweight polyurethane plastic, a rear diffuser and stainless steel exhaust system with four round chrome plated pipes (certain models). The suspension has been lowered by some 30 millimeters and rides on 9x20 inch forged wheels.

Inside the furniture maker Thonet has provided the limited-edition wooden gear lever. Although power figures were not released, Heico did reveal that an ECU upgrade will be available for the 2.0D and the D5.

Abarth 500C and Abarth Punto Evo Announced

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1286

Two very sporty products from the house of Abarth are to appear at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The Abarth Punto Evo and the Abarth 500C are the latest creations from the collaborative effort between Abarth and Fiat.

Based on the Fiat Punto Evo which was introduced in September 2009, the Abarth version completely renovates and changes the car. Its performance basis is the 1.4-litre Multiair engine boosted to 121kW. The large Garrett turbo also advances maximum torque to 250Nm at 2250rpm. It accelerates from 0 - 100km/h in 7.9 seconds. More performance can be extracted for a future SS model featuring 132 kW, 18-inch wheels and high performance brakes.

Among other advances included are a new performance mode selection system which lets the driver choose between a Sport and Normal driving mode to suit prevailing conditions. The Torque Transfer Control (TTC) is said to improve the torque transfer from the engine to the wheels, thus simultaneously improving handling.

The exterior is updated through a wider front bumper, a deeper intake cowl for improved aerodynamics, a redesigned rear bumper, an air diffuser and larger twin tailpipes. Inside Abarth provided such equipment as new race-inspired graphics and larger dials.

The company is also introducing an Abarth 500C designed to knock anyone's hair off. It features an electric soft top (available in either black or grey titanium), a third brake light which is incorporated into the rear spoiler, a MacPherson front suspension and a 1.4 Turbo T-Jet engine making 103kW and 206Nm. Abarth says it will go from 0 - 100km/h in 8.1 seconds and return an average 6.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Both these cars are scheduled to go on sale in the next few months in Europe and Japan. Other Abarth-serviced markets will follow thereafter.

Learner's licence valid longer

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1274

Learner's licences will now be valid for two years instead of 18 months, the transport department announced on Monday.

It also extended testing hours for the licenses to 17:00 on Saturdays and from 07:00 until 13:00 on Sundays, it said in a statement.

"These measures form part of government's efforts to improve service delivery and will enable us to provide a better service to driving licence applicants," it said.

"Given the challenges relating to service delivery and administrative bottlenecks at certain driving licence testing centres, this is being done with the view to improve the quality of service."

High demand for driver's tests

The department has come in for criticism with thousands of learner drivers unable to obtain dates for their driving tests before their licenses expire.

Gauteng Magistrate David Thulare recently told reporters he would not convict learner drivers if they could prove that they had tried and failed to secure testing dates.

"The law does not expect impossibility," Thulare reportedly said.

On Monday, the transport department said it was rolling out a computerised testing system that would improve efficiency and help combat corruption.

The department also plans to teach "road safety education" as part of the curriculum in schools.

"Learners in Grade 11 will be able to acquire their learner's licences and their driving licences as they complete Grade 12," it said.

Corrupt traffic cops arrested

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1275

S
ix traffic officials have been arrested for corruption in two separate incidents in the North West, the provincial police said on Monday.

Superintendent Lesego Metsi said four officers were arrested on Monday in Zeerust by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigative Unit following complaints from motorists.

The officers allegedly stopped Botswana motorists outside Zeerust, along the Nietverdiend/Gaborone road and demanded bribes of about R200.

People who did not have the cash were given heavy spot fines.

Undercover operation

Five cases of bribery and corruption have been opened against the officers, who included three men and a woman.

The officers demanded bribes from three undercover police.

They were arrested while demanding a bribe from a fourth undercover officer.

The arrested officers were expected to appear briefly in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court on Wednesday charged with bribery and corruption.

Officers reported

In another incident, two traffic officers were arrested for demanding a R300 bribe from a motorist in Rustenburg.

The motorist went to a nearby police station to report the officers, which resulted in their arrest.

They are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court soon.

North West police commissioner Lesetja Beetha said: "As a country we cannot afford corrupt government officials including in the law enforcement and it is a shared responsibility for all of us to report such officials."

He said this will result in drastic steps being taken against the officials, including laying criminal charges against them.

Papers show Toyota's 'deception'

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1276

U.S House of Representatives investigators believe Toyota intentionally resisted the possibility that electronic defects caused unintended acceleration, and then misled the public into thinking its recall would fix all the problems.

Rep. Bart Stupak, who will conduct a hearing Tuesday, also said documents and interviews demonstrate the company relied on a flawed engineering report in its statements to reassure the public.

In a letter to the company, the Democrat said a review of consumer complaints produced by Toyota shows that company personnel identified sticking pedals or floor mats as the cause of only 16 percent of the unintended acceleration reports.

Stupak said Monday that roughly 70 percent of the acceleration incidents in Toyota's customer call database involved vehicles that are not subject to the 2009 and 2010 floor mat and "sticky pedal" recalls.

Stupak also wrote to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, saying the agency lacked the necessary expertise to review defects in vehicle electronics.

Audi R8 Carbon Limited Edition by Prior Design

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1279

German tuners Prior Design have created another set of upgrades for the Audi R8. The Audi R8 Carbon Limited Edition has a body color C-pillar side panel, and will be available for order soon through the engineering firm's website.

The company opted not to re-tune the car's engine, choosing to focus on the aerodynamics of the R8. They started at the front by installing a lower lip spoiler with a center fin and two smaller air intakes on the sides. A rounded hood with carbon-fiber inlets was also added, as were new side skirts. The redesigned rear bumper was constructed with a carbon-fiber diffuser. For this version, the car sits on 9x20 front and 11.5x20 custom rear wheels.

Interior mods were performed by Kamp-Lintfort, and include carbon-fiber trim. This gives a freshened look to the center console and handbrake, and matches the use of the material in the engine compartment.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the package.

Official Audi RS5 Details Released

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1271

Following a brochure leak, Audi has released official information about the RS5.

Power comes from a 4.2-liter V8 that produces 331 kW and 430 Nm of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed S tronic transmission which allows the 1,725 kilogram coupe to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, before topping out at an electronically limited 250 km/h. If that isn't fast enough, Audi can remove the speed limiter to enable the car to hit 280 km/h. Despite this immense performance, the RS5 only consumes 10.8 liters of petrol per 100 km.

Compared to the 260 kW 4.2-liter V8 in the S5 (which will soon be replaced by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6), the RS5 engine features friction reduction technology, "intensive fine-tuning of the dual-branch intake", and a new exhaust system.

To enhance the car's handling, Audi installed a new crown-gear center differential. The self-locking crown-gear "can widely vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles. If necessary, up to 70 percent can flow to the front or as much as 85 percent toward the tail end." When extra traction isn't required, the unit has a 40:60 rear-biased configuration. According to Audi, "This new differential operates in conjunction with electronic torque vectoring, which affects all four wheels. If one of the inside wheels becomes imbalanced while the vehicle is at its operational limits, then the system slightly decelerates the wheel to obviate wheel spin. This results in terrific traction on the one hand while generating a yaw moment which aids cornering."

Other performance tweaks include a revised braking system (ceramic carbon-fiber brakes are optional), a modified electronic stabilization program (which can be turned off completely), and a recalibrated speed-dependent servotronic steering system (dynamic steering is optional).

In terms of styling, the RS5 features an aggressive body kit, a reduced ride height (20mm lower the Audi A5), and 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels (20-inchers are optional). Other highlights include twin oval exhaust pipes (which are integrated in the rear bumper), a large diffuser, and a rear spoiler which automatically extends at 120 km/h and retracts at 80 km/h.

Inside, the RS5 has leather/Alcantara sports seats, a sport steering wheel, carbon fiber inlays, piano black accents, and aluminum trim.

Look for the RS5 to go on sale in Germany this spring. No information regarding UK has been released. The RS5 will most likely not be available in the US.

Hamann TYCOON EVO M based on BMW X6 M

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1273

The Hamann Tycoon Evo M which is based on the BMW X6 M is headed for the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and will be exhibited on the tuner's 200 square metre stand. Plus it's packing a pretty mean punch. Hamann liked what they saw in the X6 M but decided more muscle would be even better.

Modifications have resulted in a hike to 493kW at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 780Nm torque between 1,500 and 5,650rpm. The 0 - 100km/h time is dispatched in a matter of 4.2 seconds while top speed exceeds the official 250km/h by an extra 50km/h.

Based on the X6 Tycoon Evo kit we've seen before, Hamann made a few cosmetic/ performance changes including the installation of enlarged air inlets in the front, a carbon bonnet, a stainless steel high performance exhaust system and two centrally mounted tailpipes.

2011 VW CrossPolo Revealed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1266

Based on the Polo five-door hatch range, the CrossPolo name seems to have gained a good following from the previous-generation model.

The new car stands even taller than before and features a number of pieces designed to give it a rugged look. The contrasting anthracite-coloured front bumper with integrated fog lights, the large air intake in the middle, an upper chrome grille, black skirts and plastic casings are some of the items. A five-spoke design is specified for the 17-inch wheels which wear 214/40 tyres. Customers will be able to choose from six exterior paint colours which probably all look lovely in combination with the silver side mirrors and silver anodized roof railing.

The interior is to be sold in four different fabric trim choices and a list of goodies to please both girls and guys. Included in that are things like leather-covered steering wheel, aluminium pedals, electric windows all round and lit makeup mirrors in the sun visors.

Volkswagen will supply the CrossPolo with a total of six engine derivatives including a 1.2 TSI with 77kW and a 1.4-litre making 63kW. Diesel fans will get to enjoy the 1.6 TDI in several power configurations such as 66kW and 77kW. The former can also be had with a DSG transmission.

Sales start at the end of May in Germany. Thereafter the rest of Europe will get it, followed by countries like Japan and South Africa.

Citroen DS3 Racing Limited Edition

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1267

The Citroen DS3 Racing is a suped up version of the company's luxe supermini.

The car's pricing was not revealed.

As such, the car's output has been bumped up by 30% to 147 kW using the turbocharged 1.6-liter THP engine. Torque is improved by 15% to 275 Nm. These changes were achieved by remapping the engine control unit, adjusting the turbo, and adjusting powertrain components.

Meanwhile, stiffer suspension springs and new shock absorbers are also installed. The car has been lowered by 15mm, while both the front and rear track were widened by 30mm. Along with the new tires wrapped around the 18-inch wheels, the changes "all dramatically change the driving dynamics," according to a press release.

To handle the extra power, the company installed four-piston caliper brakes up front and ventillated discs in back. Carbon-fiber touches are used on the new air diffuser, front bumper, lower body, and wing extensions. Chrome is also used at certain points, like the door handles and exhaust, with orange tint on the calipers, grille, roof, side mirror caps, and wheels.

Inside, designers added carbon trim and orange inserts. Purposeful sport seats were also installed.

At 3.94-meters long, the grey and orange car will be shown in Geneva with checkered flaq and DS3 Racing graphics. Only 1000 units of the Citroen DS3 Racing will be produced. The car will be released in the second half of 2010.

Toyota president to appear before Congress

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1268

The President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation will address the American public regarding his company's most publicised crisis in recent years. The 53 year-old Akio Toyoda came into his current position during mid-2009. He has been invited by Congressman Ed Towns, D-N.Y, to testify at a congressional committee next week.

"I have received Congressman Towns' invitation to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on February 24 and I accept," Toyoda said in an e-mail statement. "I look forward to speaking directly with Congress and the American people."

Toyoda's response is in contrast to his earlier statements that Toyota North America chief Yoshimi Inaba and his staff would handle any US hearings. He indicated that he would support them from behind the scenes. He was quoted as saying: "I trust that our officials in the U.S. will amply answer the questions. We are sending the best people to the hearing, and I hope to back up the efforts from headquarters...We are not covering up anything, and we are not running away from anything."

The about-turn is welcome and should boost both investor and public confidence which have been waning since the recall problems concerning sticky accelerator pedals and Prius brakes first came to light.

"Now that I have received an official request from the chairman [Towns]," said Toyoda, "I'd like to take advantage of the opportunity. I'd like to cooperate fully and try to explain our situation. The No. 1 thing in my mind is regaining the trust of our customers in terms of the safety of our vehicles."

Audi RS5 - Pictures Leaked

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1270

Ever since the Audi A5 mid-size executive coupe was born 3 years ago, reports of a high-performance RS variant have been teasing us. Finally, the wait is over.

Good thing we checked our inbox today because we received an anonymous email containing 18 full-resolution photos of the Audi RS 5. Simultaneously, we also received a tip from Australian Motoring blog Ausmotive.com which just posted the same photos which are sourced from a leaked brochure. Either way, go put your bib on, because the drooling starts now.

No details about the powertrain or performance specs are revealed in the brochure. However, it does mention three types of seating and four wheel design choices. Audi's 7-speed dual clutch S-tronic transmission is the only choice - no mention of 6-speed manual. Also, no flat-bottom steering wheel is shown.

Speculation over which powerplant will drive the RS 5 has ranged from a massaged 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the S4, 4.2-liter V8 and 5.0-liter V10 in the RS 6 to the range topping 5.2-liter V10 from the R8. Horsepower has been logically guestimated between 331 kW and 405 kW, essentially where the RS 4 leaves off with 309 kW and ending with the RS 6 and its 426 kW.

The RS 5 will undoubtedly debut at the Geneva Motor Show in two weeks. According to previous reports, the RS5 hits the streets soon after in July.

Gemballa still missing in Gauteng

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1262

Reports of German tuning ace Uwe Gemballa’s puzzling disappearance in Johannesburg last week appear to be misconstrued.

Gemballa boarded a plane from Frankfurt to South Africa last Monday and has not been reachable via any means since.

This has greatly upset his business partners, staff (all 40 of them) and customers, who generally entrust the legendary German tuner with staggeringly rare exotic supercars – the like of which Uwe is an expert at modifying.

Rumours of a kidnapping and ransom situation abounded (geared by Gauteng’s rather treacherous reputation amongst Europhiles), yet it would now appear Uwe could simply be on the run.

Authorities drop in at Gemballa HQ

German (and South African) authorities have been quite coy concerning the search for Gemballa, yet they visited Uwe’s Leonsburg facility to do an inventory check this week – usually a precursor to an internal revenue investigation...

It could transpire that Gemballa’s tax filing regime has not been quite, well, up to rigorous German standards.
The stance by German authorities could turn from a missing person’s case to one of tax evasion.

If this is the case customers, who routinely park extraordinarily rare supercars such as Ferrari Enzos and Porsche Carrera GTs in Gemballa’s care, will now have to show full ownership disclosure documentation to have any hope of reclaiming their supercars.

Such a state of affairs could prove potentially embarrassing in itself, as most of the exotics tend to be surreptitiously registered in the first place…

Still regarded as missing, not 'on the run'

As of Wednesday afternoon, authorities in Stuttgart still appear to be investigating Gemballa’s jaunt to South Africa as a missing person’s case.

Considering he has agents in North America, Asia, Australia and even one, bizarrely, in Angola, Gemballa’s jetting off to South Africa did not warrant suspicion at first, as he regularly flies abroad to visit customers and update agents.

Car enthusiasts the world over are hoping the enigmatic German tuning ace surfaces soon, to bring closure to what is rapidly becoming a quite bizarre state of affairs.

Most dangerous drivers listed

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1263

Attorneys and judges may be sticklers to the word of the law but it seems they are not quite so adherent to the rules of the road, topping a list of the the top 10 most dangerous drivers by profession.

A study by online US insurance company insurance.com found 44% of attorneys claimed a prior accident when looking for a car insurance comparison quote from insurance.com. The findings were based on accident claims as a percentage of quotes in which drivers need to give details of their driving record.

Second in the list came financial professionals followed by government workers while the study found the least dangerous drivers were athletes, with only 17% reporting prior accidents, and homemakers at 24 percent.

"Professions that demand multi-tasking - being on the phone, moving fast on a tight schedule - are prone to more distractions and, from there, more accidents," said Sam Belden, insurance.com VP, in a statement.

"Though the job of a homemaker demands multi-tasking, young children are often along for any car ride and when children are involved, people tend to take their time and use greater caution."

He added that homemakers and athletes also tended to be off the road during rush hour.

Following is a list of the Top 10 most dangerous drivers by profession:

1. Attorney/Judge

2. Financial professionals

3. Government worker

4. Bartender or waiter

5. Business professionals

6. Dog groomer

7. Marketing/advertising professionals

8. Barber/stylist

9. Coach

10. Nurse

Manhart Racing BMW M3 E92 Compressor with 482kW

http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1264

German tuners Manhart Racing have released photos and details of their version of the BMW M3 coupe. The engineering firm boosted the E92's engine output to 482 kW, while reducing 0-100 km/h time to 3.7 seconds.

Top speed goes above 350 km/h.

The upgrade was made in three parts, with the first stage adding a small compressor to provide boost pressure of .35 bar. This bumps up power to 379 kW from the stock 309 kW. Stage two bumps up pressure up to .50 bar, which brings up horsepower to 430 kW. A larger ASA compressor is added in the last stage, providing pressure of .67 bar. At this point, larger exhaust and two race-ready catalytic converters are installed.

In one of the pictures, some might notice the G-Power branded engine cover. We suspect the Manhart kit is a development on the G-Power kit, as they also use an ASA supercharger. The G-Power package boosts power to 441 kW.

20-inch BBS wheels, Continental tires, and large brake discs are also included. Leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber mirrors round out the package.
