Toyota recall - All you need to know
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1231
Following a media conference at the company's Johannesburg headquarters, Toyota South Africa Motors has released more details on the recall of certain passenger car models.
Which cars are affected?
Toyota Corolla (February 2007 to January 2010) – 45 040 vehicles
Toyota Auris (June 2006 to January 2010) – 6 665 vehicles
Toyota Verso (October 2008 to January 2010) – 841 vehicles
This equates to a total of 52 546 vehicles.
Why the recall?
According to Toyota South Africa, its participation in the worldwide recall is as a precautionary measure as the reported problem has not been as evident in the hot and dry climate of South Africa.
However, the company admits that since the announcement of its participation, a number of requests have been received from owners. These reports will be assessed on an individual basis.
How will you know?
Toyota SA will start contacting customers of the affected vehicles immediately. All Toyota dealers in South Africa and the countries that TSAM serve, including Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland, will be involved.
Alternatively, if your vehicle is one of those covered by the recall, contact your Toyota dealer directly to schedule a time for the repair.
What will the repair entail?
Repairs will start from 23 February 2010. A steel bar will be inserted to correct the accelerator mechanism that, in severe cases, has allowed the pedal to deteriorate and become harder to depress, slow to return to idle or has become stuck in a partially depressed position.
In more detail, the problem relates to the operation between the mechanism’s friction shoe that provides pedal feel and ensures pedal stability, and the adjoining surface.
How long will it take?
The repair should take less than an hour.
The cost?
Toyota will cover the full cost of the repair, regardless of the state of the car's service plan or warranty, or the ownership status of the vehicle.
Special service campaign of 216 Prius
In what Toyota SA terms an "unrelated service action", the carmaker has decided to recall all new generation Prius models (August 2009 to February 2010) for a software upgrade to the electronic brake system.
This upgrade will address the delayed brake feel on slippery surfaces that has been experienced elsewhere in the world.
Toyota is already in the process of contacting each Prius owner to inform them of this software upgrade and to schedule an appointment time.

Audi A1 Details Released Ahead of Geneva Debut
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1232
Designed to be aggressive and elegant, the A1 measures 3.95 meters long, 1.74 meters wide, 1.42 meters tall, and has a wheelbase of 2.47 meters. Major design features include a single frame grille, pronounced shoulder lines, sharply sloping C-pillars, and an available color-contrasted roof arch. Elsewhere, the A1 has ‘wings of an eagle' LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and 15- to 18-inch wheels.
Inside, the interior is typical Audi with high quality materials and premium accents. The dash was created to resemble the wings of an airplane (with the air vents acting as jet engines), while the center console was inspired by the stern of a yacht. In the rear, the luggage compartment holds 267 liters and 920 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Other highlights include LED interior lights, colorful upholstery, a media center, and a pop-up information display (with an efficiency program, which provides fuel consumption data and gives recommendations for efficient driving). Options include MMI navigation plus, a 465-watt Bose surround sound system, and panorama sunroof.
Under the hood, the A1 is avalible with two TFSI or two TDI engines (all four-cylinders). The 1.2-liter TFSI produces 63 kW and 160 Nm of torque, which enables the A1 to run from 0-100 km/h in 12.1 seconds (with a five-speed manual transmission), before topping out at 179 km/h. While it's no rocket, the 1.2 TFSI consumes 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 km, while emitting 119 grams of CO2/km.
If you select the 1.4-liter TFSI, you'll be rewarded with 90 kW and 200 Nm of torque. When paired to the optional the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, the A1 1.4 TFSI accelerates 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds (9.2 seconds with the six-speed manual) and has a top speed of 200 km/h. While Audi declined to release emissions data, they stated the 1.4 TFSI consumes 5.1 (S tronic) and 5.4 (manual) liters per 100 km in the EU test cycle.
On the diesel side, Audi offers two 1.6-liter TDIs. The base unit produces 66 kW and 230 Nm of torque, which allows the A1 to hit 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds, before peaking at 179 km/h. In terms of efficiency, the engine consumes 3.8 liters/100 km, while emitting 99 grams of CO2/km.
The range-topping 1.6-liter TDI churns out 77 kW and 250 Nm, which results in a 0-100 km/h time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 187 km/h. Despite the added performance, fuel efficiency only declines to 3.9 liters/100 km.
Regardless of what engine is selected, they all feature "a recuperation system that allows them to recover energy during braking, and are coupled with an automatic start-stop system."
The A1 will go on sale this summer.

MTM Golf VI GTI / GTD Tuning Packages Announced
http://www.maxauto.co.za/CntView.aspx?CatID=26&CntID=1233
Here, German tuner MTM does a number on the Golf VI GTI and GTD models. Namely, dialing their respective horsepower figures up more than can readily be had with other brands.
Let's start with the GTI. The Wettstetten-based tuner offers to take the grandaddy of all GTI models up to 228 kW with some ECU tinkering and its own MTM turbocharger. Of course, one can opt for one of the other 3 ECU-tuning packages available, which start with an upgrade to only 199 kW. The 228 kW GTI by MTM comes with 410 Nm of torque, a top speed of 270 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds.
The VW Golf GTD also gets a serious treatment, with a power boost up to 151 kW and 380 Nm of torque. That brings its 0 to 100 km/h time down to 7.1 seconds as opposed to the standard model's 7.8.
Other options on offer by MTM for the Golf GTI include 19-inch BIMOTO 9-spoke wheels, MTM brake system (380 mm discs), MTM's quad-exhaust system, and the tuner's in-house suspension kit that can lower the front of the GTI 30 mm.
The GTD is also offered with an MTM (quad) sport exhaust system, MTM suspensions, brake system and sport rims.
